Course Outline-Management of Technical Organization and Practices

Brief Description of the Course


The course of management is designed to discuss management theories, concepts, techniques and
practices in the context of complex, dynamic, changing and globalizing business world.
Applying the functional or process approach to the study of management, the discussion will
cover all main management functions: planning, organizing, directing and controlling. This will
equip students with a framework for understanding and analyzing the nature of managerial works
and the determining factors of managerial success. Application of the learning materials will be
encouraged through case discussions and other experiential assignments.

Course Objectives
 To provide a conceptual and theoretical knowledge about the important functions and
activities of management.
 To develop critical ways of thinking (analysis and synthesis) for evaluating and applying
a variety of concepts and techniques in managerial decision making situations through
case discussions and other experiential assignments.
 To facilitate students to become an active creator of their own knowledge base by
becoming a learner through direct observations of examples of managerial behavior in
daily life.

This unique and innovative three- credit hour course is especially designed to prepare Engineers
& Technical Graduates for all quality conscious organizations looking for enhancing
productivity and expanding their business with better customer satisfaction. In pursuit to journey
for excellence, this Engineering Management course will provide the students with basic but
comprehensive solutions and step-by-step approach to transform their organizations into quality
driven and future oriented organizations.

Aims of the course


This course aims to present you with the concepts and skills necessary to be a competent
manager in a business or study context. In addition, the course aims to provide you with an
understanding of managerial principles, practices and environment and organizational behavior

issues such as individual behavior dynamics, motivation, group behavior, perception, power,
politics and ethics, communication processes, leadership, change, conflict and stress.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this course you will be able to:
1. Identify and practice effective management by focusing on important concepts in the
development of management principles throughout history.
2. Explain how perception, attitudes and values can influence decision-making and performance
in the workplace and amongst your classmates through teamwork.
3. Participate in teamwork to demonstrate how learning is integral in changing behavior.
4. Describe the nature of motivation and explain how motivational concepts can be applied to the
work team situation.
5. Explain how groups interact and resolve conflict in the workplace and apply this theory by
undertaking a team project.
6. Identify and describe the function of leadership in management.
7. Identify, describe and apply the functions of planning, organizing and controlling in
management by practicing these concepts in a team environment.
8. Explain the communication process and effectively apply this process by participating as a
team member in project work.
9. Identify and describe the theory and practice of managerial decision-making.
10. Explain the concepts of power, politics and ethics in organisations and examine how these
works within organizational culture.
11. Discuss contemporary issues for 21st Century Managers.
