Collaboration Tool Review

For this homework assignment we had to choose one tool and review it by answering some
questions we were given. I choose Kahoot, this tool is amazing because it is used for teachers to
quiz or ask questions to get students involved in class participation. Kahoot is a game-based
platform that makes learning fun for millions of people all over the world. The website can be
accessed via web browser, phone, and the app itself. For this reason, I decided to go with
Kahoot. While doing this assignment I learned that teachers have access to create a fun and
engaging classroom. I did Kahoot and the purpose of my activity was for students to answer
trivia questions and for the teacher to see who is participating in the activity. This also allows the
teacher to see what each student knows. I learned that Kahoot allows students to use their
computers not just phones. Most students do not have phones as a kindergarten, so computer or
iPad use is important. In the lesson plan it will also allow students to get to speak to their
classmates in class about the work they have learned on Kahoot. I did a Kahoot account and gave
a glimpse of how Kahoot would work for Kindergarten class. The account was so easy to create,
all you need is an email and password and you are ready to go.

The takeaways I take from this assignment will help me in my future career as a teacher. This
assignment helped me know how Kahoot works and I got to play with it and create my own quiz.
I got an idea on how it works and how it can be used for any grade level. My plan is to teach
kindergarten and I got a glimpse on what I would be doing if one day I do use Kahoot when I do
get my own classroom. I really liked how this assignment was put like a lesson plan, so this
helps me see how I can create a lesson plan including Kahoot. This assignment did give me a
better understanding on how the app works since I had to create an account of my own. I think
the best part is that anyone can use it because it is free. I had professors here at Fresno State use
it and I got to say it is so much fun. You get to see who is in first place, second, and it keeps
going. This gives students the motivation to do better in the next question even if they got it
wrong or right.

Assistive Technology Tool Review

This homework assignment I had to create a lesson plan that will help students that have
different learning styles. This assignment allowed me to go search information about the
different learning styles because I will have students with different ways of learning. This
assignment gave me a scenario of what the lesson plan would look if I had students in my class
with different learning styles. For me I choose that there would be two students that have
dyslexia, one that has visual perceptual and one with language processing disorder. It was hard
for me to create a lesson plan for all of them, but I think I did a good job. Of course, there is
some things I need to improve on to help everyone that has these learning styles. The lesson plan
I created was compound words and I used the tools Google docs and YouTube. This lesson plan
is for English and for Kindergarten class. I have been to a kindergarten class and I saw how the
students love YouTube; the teacher would use YouTube for exercise time, which means a little
break for the students. YouTube was also used for sight words and fun songs to learn that with.
This assignment gave me the opportunity to create a lesson plan that can help students with
different learning styles, and I have an idea what I need to do when I am creating lesson plans for
my future students.

As a future teacher learning how to create lesson plans for different types of learning styles is
important. I will work with different types of students and knowing how to make
accommodations for them will be important for me. I want every student to learn no matter what
their differences are. I will learn how to do research on the different learning styles and that there
are tools available for me to create lesson plans. YouTube is the best way to have fun while
learning for elementary school. I think it allows students to get up and move around when the
teacher plays a song. This song can be the compound song or the sight words song. These songs
allow students to learn while stretching. As a future teacher I will be using YouTube for a little
break in the classroom or when I want them to learn while singing along to words. I want my
students to have fun while learning because that's the best way to learn.

Phase 1

During phase 1 we had to look at tools we would like to use for our TLP project. The tool we
decided to use is Nearpod; this part of the phase was hard because there are many tools that
would work amazing with the idea we wanted to implement. We picked the name of our TLP
project, we went with Technology is The New. Now I will give an explanation on how Nearpod
works, it's a way to create an inclusive and immersive learning experience al allow students to
actively engage with other students. Nearpod has many things to offer; you can use polls,
quizzes, videos, images, drawing boards, web content just to name a few. I learned that there are
tools out there that have everything you need as a teacher. The best way for students to learn for
me is by having fun and this tool does give students that. I learned how to work in a group and
how to include our own ideas into one. One problem we came up with to solve with using
Nearpod is we would like to eliminate paper use in the classroom and use more technology to
have fun while learning. As a group we had to look back at our own experiences with technology
and we all came up with that growing up learning was boring because it was just a lecture-based
classroom; we would only use paper after paper. When we were in elementary technology was
not as advanced as it is today but when we did use the computers, it was fun. We would play
games and learn while playing them. I learned so much while doing Phase 1.

The takeaways for my teaching future career are that I can make learning fun with all the tools
available for me. I want my classroom to be fun and exciting; I want students to be excited to go
to my class every day. Once I become a teacher, I know I can use Nearpod and make the
classroom environment fun and different from time to time. My future is set with everything
technology has to offer today. I love how most of the tools are free and anyone can use them;
teachers, parents, and students.

Phase 2: Ideation Phase

During this part of the TLP we had the idea ready and we went out to interview teachers and
parents. We got a lot of good and bad feedback on the idea of using more technology in the
classrooms. The good feedback we got was technology does develop learning skills, big
advantage towards children, some children do good with technology, it can help special needs
students, media has many advantages, and one on one devices. There are many benefits of
technology, it can help in all areas of learning. I learned so much about teamwork and how each
of us had to go out and ask questions and interview our audience. This is a skill we need as
future teachers and this phase did give me this opportunity. The bad we got from our feedback
was that students do not have help at home, need manipulatives in hand, some like paper and
pencil this is a few I will name. We did get some unexpected answers and one of them was that
this was not the age level for children. I think in today's society children already have a tablet or
iPad at home; this is age seven to eight. When working on phase I learned how to create a
survey on google drive and it helped me see how what people think about technology.

The takeaways for my future career I took on this assignment is by giving me a little look at how
to interview others. This also helped me learn to do surveys on google drive for free and how I
can involve parents on the life of their child. This also helped me be less shy and go out and ask
people questions about technology. As a future teacher I will need to speak with parents and
other teachers, and this has broken me out of my shell. I also learned how not everyone wants
their child to use technology because they think it is too much, but I think technology will
continue to get better. Students need to keep up with technology because then they will be
behind, so allowing them to use technology can help them in the future.

Phase 3: Implementation Phase

During the last phase we had to create five lesson plans that would fit with the TLP tool we
choose. The tool we chose was Nearpod. In this we looked at all the information we got from
phase one and two and decided to continue with our idea. I learned in this part that we had to
make some changes on our TLP to make it better and for more people can enjoy Nearpod. We
gave an overview on what our goal is with Nearpod which is to use Nearpod in a way to create
an inclusive and immersive learning experience to allow students to actively engage with
students. We went back and looked at the feedback we got form the parents and students. In the
feedback phase we did get a lot of people saying some students would rather use paper. I agree
so for our TLP we want to include technology use and paper for scratch paper if the students
need it. We still decided to stay with the topic which is mathematics and the grade level 1st
grade. In this phase I learned how to make a lesson plan that includes Nearpod. It was good to
create my own lesson plan and make the time to include Nearpod in the lesson. For our lesson
plans we decided to do each lesson for 30-40 minutes because this is just math we are focusing
on. We also had to come up with our own rubric to grade each student.

Creating my own lesson plan and creating our own rubric is the best way to get prepared for my
future as a teacher. This are the things I will need to do when I am a teacher and this phase has
given me a glimpse of how it is going to be. Creating the rubric was a bit challenging for me
because how can you create a rubric that will be fair for everyone in the classroom. We came up
with a rubric that can work for everyone even if we have students with a disability. As a future
teacher I will be working with children with disabilities as well. It is important to know when a
rubric will not work for children with a disability and that is when the changes need to be made. I
can take what I learned in phase 3 and create lesson plans that fit the rubric for everyone in my
class.

Digital storytelling

Creating the digital storytelling was the part I enjoyed the most in the TLP project because it
allows us to promote the tool that we have worked so hard on. This gives people a look of how
the classroom will be when Nearpod is in use. By creating a video that shows how Nearpod
works this gave me a creative way to think, this allowed me to be a little bit more creative and
think outside the box. When we were writing the script for the story it was hard. We had to think
about how the beginning would start, the middle, and the end of the story. At first, we had to
think about the length of the video; we had to make it three minutes long because we had that
limit in the website, we were using to create the video. If we wanted it to be longer, we had to
pay, so we didn't and went with three minutes. I learned how to edit and add voices and sounds
to our video, I learned how to work as a team, and I also learned to take other people's ideas into
consideration. First, we had to come up with the story line. My group members and I got
together and starting writing stuff down on how we wanted to start the video. We wanted to
introduce us and the name of our TLP project and we did this. We also had to add narration to
our video, and we did; the narration was a bit hard to record because we could not stop laughing.
At the end we did everything we needed and got our digital storyline down and created our
video.

There are many takeaways I take from this part of the assignment; we learned how to create a
video that gives the audience and idea on how the product will work. This gave me more skills
on how to edit and add images on videos. I have learned by creating this video on how to work
with other paper. We had to get together and find a way to create the video and get it done. The
three of us had different schedules and we made it work. This has helped me understand that we
must work as a team to get our whole TLP done not just the digital story.

Compound Word Art

For this activity we had to bring my lesson plan to life. This was a classroom activity with the
homework named Assistive Technology Tool Review, I was in Pod E and my group had to
create the lesson plan and put it on google slides. We all did a slide and we did accommodations
that can work with all the students I had put in there to have a disability. The objective for this
lesson plan states the same which is to accommodate students who have different learning styles
and teach them what compound words are. The subject stayed the same which is English and the
grade level being kindergarten, there is a total of 30 students. Two with dyslexia, one with visual
perceptual deficits and one with language processing disorder. The tools being used stayed the
same as well and those are YouTube and google slides. The only new idea we added to the
lesson plan was visual and physical teaching methods. We explained what a compound word is
and give examples by adding pictures. When working in my lesson plan with other group
members I felt better because they can add more ideas to it. I learned that other people can bring
their ideas and make the lesson plan more accessible for everyone that has a disability. I did not
add some things that can help the people with some of the learning styles I wrote about.

What I took away from this activity is that the lesson plan I created needed a little bit more to
help the different learning styles I had mention in the lesson plan. The more eyes that investigate
an idea it can make it so much better. This will help me in my future career as a teacher because I
will be able to ask for help and I know people will be willing to give me positive feedback. It's
important to know that getting help from others can make your work so much better. This does
not mean you were wrong, but just a way to make it better for the students that will be learning.

User Map Experience

For the user map experience, we had to create a student that is in a class using Nearpod and how
it is going when the student is using it. For our user map experience, we did it on google maps
and we put on one slide a math problem because our focus is math. We decided to go with a boy
named Kevin; we put that Kevin was frustrated because he did not understand the math problem.
We added some car tools using Nearpod and see if Kevin could add them on his own, this time
around Kevin did a great job. After this we added the same question and Kevin believes he has
the right answer, so he wrote it down. In the last slide we see that Kevin got the correct answer
and how he feels so happy. At the end we added that Kevin wants his teacher to show more
problems like this on Nearpod. Doing this assignment let us think about how the life of a child
will be when using Nearpod. We had to come up with a scenario on one child and how Nearpod
will work with his learning outcomes. I think we could have added a little more about Kevin and
the learning difficulties he had. By giving those statements we can see what the needs of Kevin
were.

The takeaways I take from this assignment is thinking outside the box and understand that every
child learns different. I think it's important as a future teacher to try and work with everyone's
needs; I know this can be hard because there are 30 students and one teacher. Although it will be
hard, I know I can find ways to work with everyone no matter their learning style.

Fair Use

This was an in-class activity that we did in our pod. We were pod c and we got fair use. We had
an article and we had to present that most important part about fair use. What is fair use; fair use
depends on the facts of your situation. What exactly are you using it for? How widely are you
using the materials? There are ways to determine if you are in fair use. First you need to look at
the four factors; the factors come from fair use provision section 107 of the US copyright act.
Factor one the purpose and character of the use, this indicates the nonprofit educational purposes
are favored over commercial uses. You can use it for fair use, criticism, comment news
reporting, teaching, to name a few. Factor two, the nature of copyrighted work. This centers on
the work being used and the law allows for wider fair use. Factor 3 the amount of substantiality
of the portion used; courts have ruled out that even use of small amounts may be excessive if
they rake the “heart of the work.” Finally, factor four this factor is effect of the use on the
potential market for or value of the work. You could have realistically purchased or licensed the
copyrighted work. I found fair use to be interesting because I did learn a little more about fair
use. I would like to learn more about it. I think learning this information is important because
sometimes we do not know how to cite certain things.

The takeaways I took from this activity is that fair use is important when you are using someone
else's work. Learning how to give credit in the correct way is important especially in college.
This will help me be more cautions on what I can and cannot do when I’m using something I got
of the internet; it important to always give credit because you cannot take someone else's work. I
did not know there were four factors we needed to follow when using fair use, this is something I
will take in my future career as a teacher and help students know when to give credit.

Cesar Chavez Conference

For this assignment we had the opportunity to go to the Cesar Chavez Conference for extra
credit. There were two guest speakers at this conference, and they spoke about their life and how
they became who they are. The first person that was presented was Kevin Kumashiro; he is an
expert on educational policy, school reform, teacher preparation, and educational equity. He has
been awarded as a scholar, educator, leader, and advocate. I liked how he said not to jump so
quickly at a problem, and I think this is true because then we let the problem take over. He also
talks about how educators can change the world. Educators are very important because they are
teaching the future of this world. He also mentions problems of common sense; he states that
common sense is not always a good thing. The second speaker was Dr. Enrique Aleman, Jr, he is
a professor in the department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at the University of
Texas at San Antonio. He showed us a film about the Brown vs Board of Education and this film
showed what people think about what happen to them during this time. He interviews people that
were at the court giving their part, they were all just children. I learned so much from these two
speakers and how they went through struggles to get to where they are.

After he spoke, we went to the Kremen building and did the breakout sessions, the presentation I
went to was “Ser Bilingue vale oro: Common core en Espanol and SLD… What you didn’t learn
in class”. As a bilingual myself I wanted to learn more about SLD. There are standards that
teachers that teach another language need to follow; this is the same at the common core
standards for learning in a regular learning area. By that I mean, in an English learning
classroom. The takeaways I take from this conference is to always work hard for what you want
in life. I also learned that there will always be help there if you go look for it. Overall, I learned
so much new information and I also saw how much talent Fresno State has.
