What is the programme about?

The Bilingual Ecosystem programme seeks to engage retired English language officers, lecturers, and teachers
who are willing to assist rural or low-performing schools with out-of-class English language activities on a
voluntary basis. This programme supports the aspirations contained in the MBMMBI policy as well as in the
Malaysia Education Blueprint (MEB) 2013-2025 to develop bilingually proficient students. We believe that with
your help, we can collectively assist our students raise their level of English language proficiency. To borrow
Kennedy’s timeless words, “ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country”.

Will I have to teach?

You will not have to teach. On the contrary, you will essentially be creating opportunities for students to use
English through fun activities or exciting programmes. You will be able to select a school closest to your home. You
will also be able to discuss with the School Head on appropriate times to conduct your preferred English language
activities or programmes with the students and/or teachers. Preference of choice of schools will be for rural and
low-performing schools, so feel free to take full ownership of this project as we help raise the level of English
language proficiency in Malaysia, one language activity at a time.

What are some activities or programmes that I can conduct?

The possibilities are endless! You may put together a sample of activities or programmes to carry out with the
students and teachers or you may merge your ideas with existing programmes and activities that are currently
being conducted in schools. We encourage you to exercise your creativity! Once you have discussed with the
School Head, you may conduct your programmes or activities outside of classroom hours.

Will I get paid?

This is purely voluntary and is designed to be a form of community service.
