The 20th Jefferson Family Reunion

July 20 - 23, 2017

The 20th Jefferson Family Reunion

Celebrating the Legacy of

Rev. John H. Jefferson, Jr.

The late Rev. John Jefferson, Jr., was born the son of the late Rev. John H. Jef-
ferson, Sr. and Emma Gourdine. He was born in January of 1842 and died on March
31, 1926. Rev. Jefferson was 84 years old when he died.
Rev. Jefferson was first married to Mary Jenkins. With this marriage were
born five (5) children. Namely: Jenkin, Theodore, Benjamin and Emma (twins), and
Juile. After the death of Mary, he then married Susan Ann Johnson. To this union
eleven (11) children were born. Namely: Isaiah, Stephen, Mary, Samuel, Lucinda, Re-
becca, Matilda, Lydia, Mary and Martha (twins) and Buddy.
John Jefferson was the pastor of the Day Dawn Baptist Church for more than
half a century. He was Founder and Moderator of the Antioch Baptist Association.
Rev. John H. Jefferson, Jr. was the first ordained, black minister in this area. He be-
came Pastor of the Day Dawn Baptist church after the resignation of Rev. Chase, a
white minister. Rev. John H. Jefferson, Jr. also served as pastor of St. Stephen Bap-
tist, St. Matthew Baptist, St. Peters, Greenland Baptist Churches and several other
churches. There were many days and nights spent on the road, regardless of the
weather condition, walking or in horse drawn buggy, giving of his services to these
churches and providing Christian leadership in the community and surrounding are-
as.
Being the dedicated Christian person he was, we perceive it a great honor to
remember him on this day as the Father of several generations following in his foot-
steps.

Greetings from the President

Greetings Jefferson Family,

On behalf of the Family Reunion Planning Committee, I am pleased to

welcome you to the 2017 Jefferson Family Reunion to commemorate our
theme of “Honoring our ancestors through Love, Faith, and Unity.”

As we celebrate our 20th Jefferson Family Reunion in historic Charleston,

South Carolina, it is imperative to understand and embrace not only our
family’s history but also the history of “family reunions,” especially among
African Americans. According to a published research article from the
University of South Carolina, African-American reunions can be traced as
far back as emancipation, when reunions were organized by former slaves
from a particular area or plantation. Ex-slaves frequently placed
advertisements in newspapers in an attempt to find family members from
whom they had been separated. Thus, the elimination of slavery in the
south “helped give birth to the reunion.“

It is truly a blessing to fellowship and worship with you this weekend as we

continue to embrace our existence, and forge toward our future for many
generations to come. As I close, I am reminded of a bible verse that truly
captures the essence of family, faith, and fortitude.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-2 For everything there is a season, and a time for every
matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant,
and a time to pluck up what is planted. (every family member has duties to
tend to, and there’s a right time for everything! All in God’s time.)

With sincerest love and appreciation,

Joseph H. Jefferson

Vice President’s Message

Greetings Precious Jefferson Family,

Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to dwell together in unity!
2
It is like precious oil upon the head, that runs down on the beard—even Aaron’s
beard— and going down to the collar of his garments;
3
as the dew of Hermon, that descends upon the mountains of Zion,
for there the Lord has commanded the blessing, even life forever.
Ps. 133:1-3 The Modern English Version

On behalf of the family of our grandmother, the late Union Matilda Jefferson
Addison, the seventh child of the late Rev. John H. Jefferson and the late Susan
Johnson, “Welcome” to the Twentieth Jefferson Family Reunion celebration. We are truly grateful for yet
another reunion and are so delighted to have you with us in the Historic City of Charleston and the
Homestead of Pineville S.C.

This year’s Theme: “Honoring Our Ancestors Through Love, Faith & Unity” is a godly, bold, rich and
fitting one that embodies the legacy of our family as descendants of the late Rev. John H. Jefferson. He was
an ordinary man - godly in love, character and determination, rich in faith and family, bold in spirit as a
force of unity used of God in extraordinary ways to touch countless lives. This is a spiritual heritage and
legacy that continues…

We express our sincerest appreciation to each person who served on the 2017 Jefferson Reunion Planning
Committee team for your wisdom and selfless contributions of time, gifts, talents and resources. Everyone
has done a tremendous job, to the honor and glory of God, to ensure that this year’s reunion is a very
memorable one. Your presence here with us this weekend, whether in person or in spirit, epitomizes love
of family, and faith that the Lord will bless our unity as we celebrate a joyful and loving time together.

We believe that great fellowship will be experienced through participation in the many planned activities,
renewal of relationships, enjoyment of families who have travel from near and far, formation of bonds with
newly discovered relatives and recollection of sweet memories of those who have gone on. Again, thank
you for your contribution and have a wonderful and harmonious reunion!

Blessings,

Dear Family,

This year’s family reunion journal entry is being celebrated with glad hearts and sincere appreciation to
a merciful and gracious God for untold blessings. God, we are so thankful!

We are not able to attend this year’s reunion due to another commitment (Tee is being recognized as a
50-year member of his fraternity, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.® whose national convention convenes
just about the same time in Orlando, Florida). This is a pretty significant milestone, so we’ll miss out on
the family reunion festivities this year.

The past two years have been busy! Our former pastor suffered an illness which required him to take
early retirement. This resulted in the church’s need to conduct a pastoral search. I was honored by the
Deacons’ ministry to be asked to serve as a member of this committee. The process took more than
fifteen months but brought us a great spirit-filled pastor-teacher.

We continue to serve in our church: Tee’s finance background makes him a favorite member of the
Finance Committee, and I continue to sing in two of the five (5) choirs of the church. We are active
members of the Sunday School, Prayer Meeting and Bible Study groups as well.

We travel quite a bit, making it a priority to spend as much time with our children and grandchildren as
possible. We don’t get to Pineville as often as we did when our parents were alive, but we communicate
frequently with siblings, cousins and extended family members who still reside there.

We pray that the 2017 Family Reunion is well attended and in enjoyed by all!

Love and blessings!

Watson (Tee) and Barbara Jean (Jefferson) Ragin

Greetings to all, as we embark upon Jefferson Family Reunion 2017, in historic Charleston, S. C.

Patriarch, Jerome, better known as “Kenny”, is continuing to support the Knights of Columbus
Organization of Moncks Corner and Bonneau, at least financially. His work with the Berkeley County
American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), has given him opportunities to be creative in
designing special buttons and pins for group members, and the Pineville Retired Citizens Group that
meets once a week at Redeemer R. E. Church, HWY 45, Pineville, is still on his agenda, when not
traveling around the world, with wife Yvonne. He is also a member of the Zeta Male Network, and
brought greetings during one of the session’s Opening Meetings. This involved man continues
attending Lady of Peace Mission in Bonneau, SC, but does not sing with the choir as much. He is
experiencing some vision loss which makes it difficult, at times, to read. However, he is grateful for
the measure of health he still has and thanks God daily for His Grace and Mercy.

Matriarch, Yvonne, continues her work as a member of the Board of Commissioners for Trident
Technical College for Berkeley County, now as the Commission’s Vice Chairman, and was elected in
September, of 2016, by the ACCT Board’s Southern Region, as it representative to the National
Diversity Committee. In addition to the additional responsibility, she continues writing her weekly
column for the Berkeley Independent. Her position as Southeastern Regional Director of Zeta Phi
Beta Sorority, Incorporated, keeps her on the go, serving members in her five states with the
recently charted Trinidad and Tobago Chapter, increasing her coverage area to six states, provinces
and republics. Extensive travel, trainings, chartering and meetings have become the name of the
game for her (accompanied by husband Jerome). Her professional consulting portfolio is well
established.
She remains President of the Adult Missionary Auxiliary of Day Dawn Baptist Church, and is a
member of the Gospel Choir, the WYCO, and the Rules, and Regulations Committee. Yvonne is also
happy to visit with, and bring home with her, the sweetest grandchildren anywhere!

Yvonne with International Jerome brings greetings on behalf of the Male

President of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Network at Zeta Leadership Conference.
Incorporated.

“We are grateful to God for the gifts He provides for our family, and we work diligently to keep
Him before us daily. Psalm 37:32 states ‘the steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and He
delights in his ways.’ The Lord grants success to the one whose behavior He finds commendable. This
teaching we placed before our children as they grew and developed into men and women of the world.”

Greetings from the Middleton Family on the

Occasion of our Jefferson Family Reunion. It seems
like yesterday when we met in Orlando, Florida two
years ago. And since that time many changes have
taken place in our world, nation and state.

our family since we last met in Reunion.

Lillie continues to enjoy her retirement from the public school

system and works vigorously with me in Ministry at Silas United

she as First Lady.

My mother, Viola J. Middleton is a resident of Morningside Nursing

Home in the Bronx, New York. At the ripe old age of 93, she is the only

God looked around his garden

And found an empty place,
He then looked down upon the earth
And saw your tired face.
He put his arms around you
And lifted you to rest.
God’s garden must be beautiful
He always takes the best.
He knew that you were suffering
He knew you were in pain.
He knew that you would never
Get well on earth again.
He saw the road was getting rough
And the hills were hard to climb.
So he closed your weary eyelids
And whispered, ‘Peace be Thine’.
It broke our hearts to lose you
But you didn’t go alone,
For part of us went with you
The day God called you home.

Grandma will ALWAYS Be Our

Heart!

The Broken Chain

WE little knew that morning that God was going to call your
name. In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same. It
broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone; For part of
us went with you, the day God called you home. You left us
peaceful memories; your love is still our guide; And through we
cannot see you, you are always at our side. Our family chain is
broken and nothing seems the same, But as God calls us one
by one the chain will link again.

When Tomorrow Starts Without

Me
When tomorrow starts without me, and I'm not
here to see…if the sun should rise and find
your eyes filled with tears for me, I wish so
much you wouldn't cry the way you did today.
While thinking of the many things we didn't get
to say.
I know how much you love me, as much as I
love you. And each time you think of me, I
know you'll miss me too. But when tomorrow
starts without me, please try to understand,
that Jesus came and called my name. And
took me by the hand, and said my place was
ready in heaven far above, and that I'd have to
leave behind all those I clearly love.
So when tomorrow starts without me, don't
think we're far apart. For every time you think
of me, I'm right here in your heart. (by David
Romano)

Heir of Lydia Jefferson Dingle

In Loving Memory of Ruth D.

Bailey

Ruth was a friend, mentor,

sister, aunt and mother to me
and my children. Yes, she was
all of the above and more. Ruth
never forgot a birthday or
graduation. She bought gifts for
the children when they were in
college and always kept in touch
with them.

Ruth and I spoke every Sunday evening. It was our SPECIAL time
together. Also, during the spring I would receive envelopes regularly
from her with seeds for my flower garden. Ruth loved working in her
garden too and I know she is having a great time working in God’s
garden.

I miss you Ruth but when I read your favorite Psalm 121 it reminds
me that God is in charge.

Family Tribute
To
Union Matilda Jefferson Addison
Affectionately: Ma, Mama, Union, Ste Euwn, Euwn

Union Matilda Jefferson Addison was the seventh of eleven children born to the late Rev. John H. Jefferson
and late Susan Johnson. The biblical meaning for the number seven is
completion and this concept carried through in every endeavor she
attempted in all aspects of her life.

Both her first “Union” and middle “Matilda” names have significant
meanings. Her first name “Union” (given on the day of her birth - July
29,1900 and symbolic of the day of the first Union Sunday) means the
action or fact of joining and her middle name “Matilda” means might or
strength in battle were so fittingly and appropriately given as her life
prophetically testified. She represented “spiritual unity” for her family,
was “virtuous” and “mighty in strength” in adversity.

She was a matriarch and a sounding board for all of her siblings, a go-to person with a solid biblical
foundation and spiritual beliefs. She read and studied her bible daily and always kept it within arm’s reach
and her grandchildren listening ears. She was born on the fifth Sunday, July 29,1900 as worship was being
celebrated at the first annual "Union" of the Antioch Baptist Association founded by her father.

Both her given and middle names would prove to be pivotal as she came against and survived many
personal family trials. "Union", “Ste Euwn,” “Euwn”, (as she was affectionately called), became a teacher's
helper to the Rev. Devore at the age of 16 while still in high
school. After completing High School and up until her marriage at
the age of 19 she continued teaching. She believed in getting a
good education. She supported and encouraged all of her
children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in this manner.

She married Clint Addison in 1919 and to this union five children
were born: Lydia, Capers, Victoria, Samuel and Pearl. The couple
relocated soon after marriage to a neighboring community called
Swamp Fox that was located between her childhood home of
Pineville and her husband’s home of Old Field. This is where they
made their home and raised their family. Clint worked the roads (helped build the highways) and would be
on the road traveling. Union had the responsibility of managing the home; family and farm while Clint
worked building roads. Clint provided a good living for the family and they were doing well. Shortly after
the birth of their daughter Victoria, Rev. John H. Jefferson took ill and soon died. Union was the age of 26
years at his death.

While Clint and Union celebrated the blessings of parenthood of teens and young adults, adversity was
couched at their door, but they jointly stood the test of their faith and of the times to come. They received
the news of losing their two sons within days of each other. Capers the eldest son was born in 1923 and
drafted into World War II at the age of 18. He served for 2 years and received a purple heart. On July 19,
1945 word was received in Pineville, S.C. (three month after his actual death) that a sniper had killed Capers
on April 26, 1945 nearing the end of the WWII. This was difficult news to comprehend for such a close-knit
family. Then, within a week later, on July 25, the other surviving son succumbed to a tragic car crash taking
his life at the young age of 19. They continued their lives with the eldest daughter Lydia (David Groom) and
the youngest daughter Pearl (Austin B. Groom) living at home. Victoria married Benjamin Middleton and
moved to Philadelphia, PA. Upon the news of the death of her
brothers Victoria came home. After seeing how emotionally difficult
it was for her parents, she and her husband agreed that she should
remain with them. He then prepared for their relocation back
to S.C. from PA.

This was a true test of the couple’s faith in supporting their three
daughters and consoling each other. Because of their strong
anchoring in the Word of God it made them stronger. Clint and
Union were able to withstand the double sting of death and went
on to become a strong pillar for their Swamp Fox, Old Field and
Pineville communities. Union would often mentor and discuss
the Word with local Ministers. She was sought out for strong
Godly, wisdom and counsel by many.

Union kept the eldest son’s military uniform in a wardrobe in her bedroom. She often told the stories to her
children and grandchildren of how God kept her through that time as God kept Job. She understood trials
and was never bitter towards God for the adversity. She went on to live a long and fruitful life with her
husband and daughters.

In deep appreciation for the strong Matriarch that she was and all the wonderful values she and Clint
instilled in their family, Union we now share the loving bond that exists between your three daughters. Lydia
your eldest departed this earthly life on December 8, 2007 at the age of 86 and leaves Pearl and Victoria
and your grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great-grandchildren to continue your legacy. Mama,
as we so affectionately called you, and Papa as we lovingly called you…this is from your daughters and
their families.

The Psalmist wrote in:

Psalm 127:3-5 (NIV)
3
Children are a heritage from the LORD,
offspring a reward from him.
4
Like arrows in the hands of a warrior
are children born in one’s youth.
5
Blessed is the man
whose quiver is full of them.
They will not be put to shame
when they contend with their opponents in court.

To follow are some of the heirs of Clint and Union and where we are today in 2015 fulfilling the
lessons taught and being a blessing to the earth. Thank you both very much!
