UP Sangkil Karasak

The UP Sangkil Karasak is a club dedicated to the practice of arnis, specifically the LSAI/LESKAS style of arnis. It began in 1991 as an

informal club by the late Master Elmer Ybanez who founded LESKAS (Lema Scientific Kali Arnis System), and who was the most

trusted student of Grandmaster Benjamin Luna Lema, the founder of LSAI (Lightning Scientific Arnis International). The LSAI itself was

founded as early as 1937 in Capiz, Panay. The UP Sangkil Karasak was first officially recognized by the Office of Student Affairs in

2002. The name "Sangkil Karasak" means spear and shield, as a reminder of the native Filipino roots of arnis that reach far back as
pre-Spanish colonial times.
In the unfortunate passing away of Grandmaster Benjamin Luna Lema on January 4, 2003, and his immediate successor Master Elmer

Ybanez on March 31, 2004, the direct leadership of the club was handed over to their students. As of 2009, the active masters of the

club are Master Felipe Bot Jocano, Master Nathan Dominguez, and Master Alex Ortinero.

Currently, training is scheduled every Tuesday and Thursday, 4pm onwards, at the Classroom 2 of the DMST Complex, UP Diliman.

The UP Sangkil Karasak is an escrima club begun in the University of the Philippines, Diliman, and officially recognized in 2003. It is devoted to the

study of the Lightning Scientific (LSAI) style of escrima/arnis, one of the most effective and acclaimed styles of arnis or escrima. LSAI was in turn

founded by the late grandmaster Benjamin Lema Luna, who hails from Capiz, Philippines. His particular style of arnis is characterized by long-range and

high-powered strikes, along with the utilization of the major parts of the body, such as the legs and the torso, to generate power for the stick strikes. Its

other specialty is called the espada y daga technique, which uses both a long stick weapon and a shorter weapon such as the knife, or the open hand.

This combination of weapons is able to form a quick chain of alternating attacks, and when executed properly can literally "chop" the opponent into

pieces in a few seconds.

The UP Sangkil Karasak was originally headed by the protégé of Grandmaster Benjamin Lema Luna, Guro Elmer Ybañez, who studied physical

education at the University of the Philippines. Unfortunately Guro Elmer Ybañez passed away not long after Mang Ben's death in 2003. He passed away

in March of 2004.

After the death of Guro Elmer, the UP Sangkil Karasak was then headed by his top students, including Master Felipe "Bot" Jocano, an anthropology

professor in the University of the Philippines and perhaps the foremost scholar on the history and different styles of arnis and escrima. Until today the

club seeks to propagate the knowledge of the art of escrima, through exhibitions and free training trials.

One of the specialties of the UP Sangkil Karasak is in being able to teach arnis to normal college students, with or without any martial arts background.

Training has usually been done at the Department of Military Science and Tactics complex, Classroom 2, of the University of the Philippines, Diliman.

They accept private professional students, while there is also a significant discount for non-working students.

Having had the privilege of training in this club for about five years, I can say that I was very fortunate stumbling across this martial arts club. Training

with them has improved my character, discipline, and physical condition significantly. If you every find yourself within the Quezon City area of Manila,

Philippines, come and pay the club a visit!

being a student of philosophy, especially researching the science of metaphor.

If you ever pay a visit to the University of the Philippines, Diliman, and hear the loud noise of clashing sticks, chances are youve just
stumbled upon the UP Sangkil Karasak, a club devoted to the martial art of arnis, most especially the LSAI style of arnis, or Lightning
Scientific Arnis.
LSAI was in turn founded by the late grandmaster Benjamin Lema Luna, who hails from Capiz, Philippines. His particular style of
arnis is characterized by long-range and high-powered strikes, along with the utilization of the major parts of the body, such as the
legs and the torso, to generate power for the stick strikes. Its other specialty is called the espada y daga technique, which uses both
a long stick weapon and a shorter weapon such as the knife, or the open hand. This combination of weapons is able to form a quick
chain of alternating attacks.

The UP Sangkil Karasak was originally headed by the protg of Grandmaster Benjamin Lema Luna, Guro Elmer Ybaez, who studied
physical education at the University of the Philippines. Unfortunately Guro Elmer Ybaez passed away not long after Mang Bens death
in 2003. He passed away in March of 2004.

The UP Sangkil Karasak was then left to the most trusted students of Guro Elmer, including Master Nathan Dominguez, who, along
with his students Glenn Lamador and Kelvin Celis, were winners of the gold medal in the South East Asian games, in the category of
synchronized forms. It is in line with this standard of excellence that the club continues its goal of propagating knowledge of arnis
and escrima through various activities.

The UP Sangkil Karasak makes escrima training accessible to those who would otherwise not have the time to train in martial arts
full-time. It has had great success in training ordinary college students, who also have to focus on their studies, though they also
accept private professional students for a very minimal fee.

Those who get the most out of escrima training in UP Sangkil Karasak are those who are willing to stick to it for the long term, and
that means several years. Training requires patience, determination, and a love for the art which has been hailed as the deadliest
martial art in the world. If youre interested in getting a head start in escrima, the UP Sangkil Karasak is a good place to be!
