Introduction:
Islam is a “complete code of life.” It has provided guidance in every sphere of life, from
individual cleanliness, rules of trade, to the structure and politics of the society. Islam can never
be separated from social, political, or economic life, since religion provides moral guidance for
every action that a person takes. The primary act of faith is to strive to implement God's will in
both private and public life. Muslims see that they, themselves, as well as the world around
them, must be in total submission to God and his Will. Moreover, they know that this concept of
His rule must be established on earth in order to create a just society. Like Jews and Christians
before them, Muslims have been called into a covenant relationship with God, making them a
community of believers who must serve as an example to other nations by creating a moral social
order. God tells the Muslim global nation:
“You are the best community raised for mankind, enjoining the right and
forbidding the wrong…” (Quran 3:110)
Origins of Islam as a political movement are to be found in the life and times of Islam's prophet
Muhammad and his successors. In 622 CE, in recognition of his claims to prophethood, Muhammad
was invited to rule the city of Medina. At the time the local Arab tribes of Aus and Khazraj dominated
the city, and were in constant conflict. Medinans saw in Muhammad an impartial outsider who could
resolve the conflict. Muhammad and his followers thus moved to Medina, where Muhammad drafted
the Medina Charte. This document made Muhammad the ruler, and recognized him as the Prophet
of Allah. The laws Muhammad established during his rule, based on the revelations of the Quran
and doing of Muhammad, are considered by Muslims to be Sharia or Islamic law, which Islamic
movements seek to establish in the present day. Muhammad gained a widespread following and an
army, and his rule expanded first to the city of Mecca and then spread through the Arabian peninsula
through a combination of diplomacy and military conquest.
Discussion:
Islamic Belief System:
It is a belief that there is One and Only Originator of this universe Who not only brought all the
matter and energy into existence out of nothing but Who therefrom created innumerable types
and forms of inanimate and animate objects. He is All-Powerful Who not only brings things into
existence but also nourishes them, sustains them, maintains them, regularizes them and directs
them from their earliest state to that of ultimate completion and perfection. He has framed all the
laws of nature under which things would assume various shapes and forms, and has determined
the ratios and proportions in which various elements must combine with one another to result in
various compounds and objects. He has regularized different stages through which all things,
including human beings must pass on the way to their completion and perfection, and also has
made sure the creation of necessary provisions for all the beings in the journey to their ultimate
destination.
Definition of a ‘Muslim’:
It should suffice to ‘legally’ declare or consider someone a Muslim if he/she makes the
following declaration:
“I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and Muhammad (S.A.W) is His last and final
Messenger. I solemnly vow to submit, surrender and yield to all of Allah’s Laws and Commands
as given in His last and Final Book, i. e. the Quran25. I realize that in the Hereafter, I shall surely
be held accountable in Allah’s Court for all of my words and deeds.”
Freedom of Expression:
Freedom of speech or expression is the political right to express one’s opinion or ideas. The right
to freedom of expression is not absolute anywhere in the world, and is subjected to restrictions as
with slander, sedition, libel, obscenity, etc. In an Islamic Republic, no one is allowed to spread
immorality or broadcast obscenity in the name of freedom of media or press. No one is allowed
to calumniate the innocent under the pretext of freedom of speech. Regarding the speech or
expression, the Quran gives several guidelines such as: talking straight without any deception;
choosing best words to speak and saying those in the best possible manner; speaking politely;
shunning false and deceitful statements; not confounding truth with falsehood; using civilized
language; and being just when voicing an opinion. It is not right for the authorities of the Islamic
Republic to curb fair criticism on their policies and genuine differences of opinion. Anyone who
suffers any injustice has full right to publicly criticize those in authority but those who have not
suffered any injustice cannot be allowed to spread malicious propaganda without any reason.
