LRFD Distribution Factors*

Live Load Distribution Factors are calculated according to AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications, 4th Edition
(2007, with no interim revisions) as prescribed by TxDOT policies (LRFD Design Manual July 2008) and practices. The
Lever Rule is used when outside the Range of Applicability. The Range of Applicability for the Skew Correction Factors
is ignored.
Input
*Beam Designation = U54 Beam
No. Beams, Nb = 7 d = 54 in
CLbrg to CLbrg, L = 118.2 ft CF = 38.4 in
Beam Spacing, S = 9.8 ft
Avg. Skew Angle, Θ = 27.8 deg
Slab Overhang, OH = 6.75 ft 60.55
Rail Width, RW = 1 ft 43.46
Roadway Width, W = 70.0 ft
No. Design Lanes, NL = 5 lanes

*For typical cross sections ( b & c ). Table 4.6.2.2.1-1

Results The Final LLDF for may be modified according to the following TxDOT
Final policies:
LLDF ♦ When the Roadway width is greater than or equal to 20ft, Exterior beams
are designed for two or more lanes loaded only.
♦When the Roadway width is less than 20ft, all beams are designed for
Interior Shear LLDF, gVinterior 1.086 one lane loaded only.
♦ For Exterior beams the lever rule value is multiplied by 0.9 to account for
Interior Moment LLDF, gMinterior 0.580 the interior beam taking some of the load due to continuity.
♦ For Exterior beams, the multiple presence factor is 1 for one lane loaded.
Exterior Shear LLDF, gVexterior 1.146 ♦ In no case shall the LLDF for the exterior beams be less than the LLDF
for the interior beams.
Exterior Moment LLDF, gMexterior 0.614 ♦ When there are two or less beams the live load is equally distributed
between the beams.
♦In no case shall the LLDF be less than m·NL÷Nb.

CALCULATIONS:
Range of Applicability (ROA) Checks
Shear LLDF Correction for Skew (Table 4.6.2.2.3c-1) Check Θ: 0° ≤ 28° ≤ 60° OK
Ld Check S: 6' ≤ 9.8' ≤ 11.5' OK
Check L: 20' ≤ 118.2' ≤ 140' OK
12.0
Corr. = 1.0 + tan θ Check d: 18'' ≤ 54'' ≤ 65'' OK
6S Check Nb: 7 ≥ 3 OK
= 1.0 + sqrt(118.2*54 / 12.0) / (6*9.8) * tan (28)
Corr. = 1.208

Moment LLDF Correction for Skew (Table 4.6.2.2.2e-1) Check Θ: 0° ≤ 28° ≤ 60° OK
Set Θ = 28°
Corr. = 1.05 - 0.25 tan θ ≤ 1.0
= 1.05 - 0.25 (tan 28) ≤ 1.0
Corr. = 0.918
