A. Reading the book
B. E​xtension activity: ​After the book is read have a small discussion with children about
some of the words used in the book and explain that when we don’t understand a word to look it
up. Place all vocabulary cards faced down and have each child get a card. Once they have their
word turn then to the page in the book with that vocabulary word and read the sentence. Ask
children if they can find another word to replace their chosen word by using the children's
dictionary and thesaurus. Have children use their notebooks to draw/ write their definitions and
then share their finding among their peers.
5. Closure: ​Once all children discuss their new words and findings using their notebooks ask
follow up questions such as what word was the easiest to find? what else can you do to find out
about a word you don’t know?
