Philippines has a concrete set of values that even foreign countries are admiring of.

As a child, I
grew up being taught how to practice and integrate these Filipino values into my values so that
when I grow up, I will become a person of honor and respect. We have been influenced by different
countries, and their values have been our values as well. We, in fact, do not really neglected our
own values, beliefs and tradition but we are just adapting to the change because of the influences
of other countries. As far as I know, we have been practicing these values, until stupidity and folly
barge in our morality and values.

Today, we are facing different problems: social, economic, spiritual and even our national security
is already an issue. It is said that nowadays Filipinos are morally, spiritually and intellectually
bankrupt. Terrorism, bribery, murder and other crimes show that some of the Filipinos have
already forgotten about the morality. Because of greed in power and self-interest, they are willing
to do things that are ethically-wrong. It is irritating to see how people flaunt inanity through their
senseless arguments, which are sometimes not relevant at all. It is also said that people these days,
especially the Millennials, are entitled. Young people like to be associated in different things. They
like to express that their thoughts and opinions are relevant and should be respected. Freedom of
expression is not a problem at all. However, some of these opinions and thoughts are based on
emotions and not on logical thinking. People just say whatever they feel about something and post
it on their social media accounts, without being cautious and thinking of the consequences of doing
such things.

Technology and urbanization has great effect on the deterioration of our values. Social media
became a battle ground full of hurt, hatred and disgust, for people who love being in discussions.
Through it, people have the opportunity to show that our values really are already destroyed. We
have forgotten the kindness, compassion, self-integrity, delicadeza, etc. We’ve once been united,
but now separated. We only think about ourselves.

I am coming up in a question, “What has been wrong why Filipino values became as worse as
this?”. It is hard to answer this question, however, I am thinking of a thing that should be
considered in answering this question. We, Filipinos, need truth. We badly need truth to restore
our Filipino values. Nowadays, we are seeing how the concept of relativism became so obvious in
our society. Every person wants that what he believes should be right, regardless of the fact that
we have the predefined common morality as Filipinos. Most of the people think that there is no
absolute truth. According to the Kantian ethics, the rightness and wrongness do not depend on
their consequences, but whether they fulfill the duty. We should recalibrate our moral compass.
We have been lost. We need to be guided. We need a certain truth that will guide us, so that we
will not look like stray cats walking but with no directions. We need to restore our Christian values,
which are nowadays have been corrupted. We need to fix the fouled truth.

As future chemical engineer, it should be always considered doing what is morally right, because
it will be a guidance in dealing with future ethical issues that could be encountered. Regardless of
the outcome of the chosen decision, as long as what is right is being abided, rest assure we have
really taken good care of our morality and virtue as Filipino and as chemical engineer.
