Práctica no. 1
1. (Problem 1.2, INTRODUCTION TO MAGNETIC MATERIALS, B.D. Cullity –
C.D. Graham) A cylinder of ferromagnetic material is 6.0cm long and 1.25cm in diameter, and has a magnetic moment of 7.45 x 103 emu. a. Find the magnetization of the material. b. What current would have to be passed through a coil of 200 turns, 6.0cm long and 1.25cm in diameter, to produce the same magnetic moment? c. If a more reasonable current of 1.5 ampere is passed through this coil, what is the resulting magnetic moment? 2. (Problem 1.4, INTRODUCTION TO MAGNETIC MATERIALS, B.D. Cullity – C.D. Graham) A ring sample of iron has a mean diameter of 5.5 cm and a cross-sectional area of 1.2 cm2. It is wound with a uniformly distributed winding of 250 turns. The ring is initially demagnetized, and then a current of 1.5 ampere is passed through the winding. A fluxmeter connected to a secondary winding on the ring measures a flux change of 8.25 x 10-3 weber. a. What magnetic field is acting on the material of the ring? b. What is the magnetization of the ring material? c. What is the relative permeability of the ring material in this field? 3. (Problem 2.1, Fundamentals of Magnetism, Mathias Getzlaff) Determine the paramagnetic susceptibility per unit volume of an ideal gas at room temperature assuming that J = 1 and g = 2 (being the values for molecular oxygen). Determine cuáles corresponden a estados paramagnéticos y diamagnéticos. 4. (Exercise 1.1, MAGNETISM AND MAGNETIC RESONANCE IN SOLIDS, A.P. Guimaraes – I.S. Oliveira) Coercive Force of a Particle. Consider a particle of a uniaxial ferromagnetic single domain. Let H be an applied field and UK == K sin2 () is the anisotropy energy, with the angle between the direction of the applied field and the magnetization M. Write the total energy of the particle and show that the reverse field along the magnetization axis required to invert M is given by H == 2K/ Ms (where Ms is the saturation magnetization). 5. (Quantum Mechanic, J.L. Powell and B. Crasemann) Find the first-order eigen-functions of the matrix 1 𝜀 0 𝐻 = [𝜀 1 𝜀 ] 0 𝜀 2 and use them to calculate of H to second order. Draw a graph showing the eigenvalues as a function of 𝜀 for -0.1 ≤ 𝜀 ≤ +0.1. Calculate a few values exactly, and compare with the perturbation-theory approximations. 6.
