In the city, I live in, Southgate CA, we have an issue of
trash pollution that is affecting us all as a whole. I chose to
base it on this subject because it is something that follows us
everywhere we go, not just in the streets but at school as well
which is why I decided to call it "Trash Roaming". My photos
are exaggerated, but in a way, that makes the issue more
serious than it actually is, in this case I made the amount of
trash seem more than it actually is. Since my photos are in
black and white the most obvious element and principals of
photography shown is value and contrast, including texture,
space, proportion, unity and emphasis.
My artwork are photographs taken by a camera. In
order to complete it I used Photoshop to make them black
and white as well as fixing any darkness or lighting. To make
the photo subject stand out and not blend in, making it boring,
I had to move around to get angles that would make the
proportion look more than it actually is and make the photo a
little more interesting. I also had to move around in order to
capture the photograph that I was looking for, and find an
area in the city that shows the issue well
For my photography option to make the photos white
and black was inspired by a photographer who was brought
to my attention on my photography class in my high school
years. Sebastião Salgado had a lot of black and white
photos that are very beautiful and he always focused on an
issue that not only one person is challenged with but many.
Due to that I also focused on an issue that many in my
community are dealing, in order for people to feel something,
I tried to show through my artwork a feeling of overwhelm,
and sadness.

As an artist, my goal is to make a point, bring
awareness to something, and make people think or
want to do something. This piece helped with my
goal, because it not only showed an issue that
affects everything and everyone, but it makes you
realize something that you might have not known
before. The pictures make you want to change that
reality, and make you think what you could do to
change it as well as who is affected by this the
most.
While taking this photo, I learned that the
issue was more serious than I thought. Sometimes
I did not have to make the amount exaggerated
which brought many concerns since it was in a
location where students spent most of their time at.
It didn't come out how I imagined it, I wanted to
show more variety but i did not have the time to
walk around and shoot. Due to this piece, I now
know more what I am able to do such as time. For
my future artworks, I will keep that in mind and
choose a topic that could be done without me
having to go and look for it. I also gained practice
and more knowledge on photography which will
help out in my future pieces.

Natali Sandoval

Natali was born in March 1 2001, at the hospital San

Frances in the city of Lynwood, Los Angeles California.
Through out the midway of her high school years, she
took photography classes where she has learned
everything about being a photographer. What interests
her the most in photography is the shadows and lights,
mainly because when you have too much or too little of
them; it changes the whole perspective of the photo. In
this book she chose to focus on an issue that her city,
South Gate Los Angeles California, is or was dealing
with; trash pollution. Natali chose this topic because it is
something that affects everyone and everything, she did
not only took pictures on the streets dealing with this
problem but schools who also have this issue. Through
her photography days, she learned many things that
were used in some of the pictures taken for this topic.
One of them being trying to make black and white
pictures look interesting and not boring, she also
included the rule of thirds and golden ratio in trying to
make it possible.
