Throughout his practice, K. K. Hebbar created works

that were a result of his immersive inquiries and
encounters with various cultures and traditions. He
modulated the visual treatment he rendered upon
the work in correlation with his subject’s
environment and reality. This oil work from the year
1964, is evidently the result of the artist’s
experiences in South & Central America. He had
participated in the Biennale at Brazil that coincides
with the work’s date of the creation. An example of
his works from the same period is titled ‘Homage to
Sun and Moon’ dated, 1964. The work’s colour
composition is in continuity with style he had
adopted while executing these Aztec theme works.

The sun and the moon are integral elements of the

Aztec’s religious beliefs, wherein the moon god is
synonymous with ‘Coyolxauhqui’. In this work the LALU PRASAD SHAW
artist depicts a crescent moon, silhouetted against 1937

Ram Kumar belonged to the first generation of post independence artists. He

successfully progressed to create an individual identity that represented Indian
aesthetics without succumbing to the superficial inventory of native motifs. He
always struck a chord with the audience on account of his humanist approach
which reflects in his art. When in Paris he joined the French Communist Party,
when he returned home he lived near the refugee camp at Karol Bagh in Delhi.

He visited Benaras for the first time along with fellow artist M.F. Husian, during
the 60s his Benares series had a sombre distinction, with heavy use of greys and
browns which distilled the pure white hue to give it an illuminating effect,
perfectly bringing this city of light with rapid flowing river to life on the canvas.
In the 80s he revisited Benares and conceptualized yet another series dedicated
to this city, this time round he etched the perspective from the banks of the
Ganga, carefully imprinting and executing places of worship and ancient
abodes of the sages. His visits to various countries, places within India and their
inherited geology are his muse and he alternated between depicting
landscapes and cityscapes. Ram Kumar was born in the year 1924 in Shimla,
Himachal Pradesh. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in the year 2010 and
the Life Time Achievement Award by the Government of Delhi. The artist

This work was executed by M.F. Husain as an expression of artistic protest against the 1989
Tiananmen Square Massacre that took place in China on the 4th of June, 1989.
What ended on that fateful day, in all actuality began on the 18th of April, 1989 Rs. 10,00,000 – 15,00,000 | US$ 14,925 – 22,388

students began this movement as a sign of respect.

In the weeks that followed, thousands of citizens thronged to join the students in the
square to protest against China's Communist rulers. The situation escalated to the
point that on the 19th of May, 1989 the General Secretary of the Chinese
Communist Party, Zhao Ziyang, appeared at the rally to request the gathered crowd
to end the demonstration. When the protesters didn’t pay heed, Premier Li Peng
imposed martial law on the very same day. A fortnight later, on the 4th of June, 1989
at about 1 a.m. Chinese troops reached Tiananmen Square and through the course
of the day they fired on civilians and students, thwarting their non-violent protest
and killing in the multitudes. The official death toll of this horrific incident has not
been released by officials till date.

K. S. Radhakrishnan was born in February 1956 in Kuzhimattom,

Kottayam, Kerala, India. He was inspired by his uncle to take up
painting in 1970. After completing pre-degree courses in
Changanacherry he joined the Kala Bhavan Vishwabharati
University, Santiniketan, West Bengal in 1974. In 1979 he
received a BFA from Viswhabharati University and participated in
his first exhibition at the Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata, India.

Critics applaud his works owing to the degree of immediacy

present in his sculptures. His figures are robust with ritual dances
and performances while touching upon Hindu mythology. He has
experimented with various mediums such as bronze, beeswax
and plaster of Paris. His sculptures are a product of a tangible
rendezvous with his medium. His works have been exhibited
globally. The artist lives and works in Kolkata.

directly from the artist.

This untitled work by M.F. Husain dated 1980 belongs to

the first set of creations he had executed for his Mother
Teresa Series. It is a known fact that it was in the year
1980 that Mother Teresa appeared for the first time in
M.F. Husain’s art. Through his paintings from his Mother
Teresa Series, the artist aspired to express the essence of
Mother Teresa’s existence in the life of those she served.
At times he would portray her nurturing an orphaned
child or lamenting and sharing the grief of the harshness
of a poor man’s reality. However in this early Mother
Teresa Series work he portrays her as an anchor and pillar
of support for the street children of Calcutta. The
destitute are painted clinging onto the soft flowing
drapes of her blue bordered white saree that was
synonymous with Mother Teresa.

M.F. Husain’s oeuvre was not restricted to painting and

he successfully dabbled in a multitude of media such as
designing toys in wood, furniture, murals, drawings,
graphic-prints, installations, documentaries, short films,
feature films etc. His first film ‘Through the Eyes of a
Painter’ won a Golden Bear Award in the year 1967 at the
Berlin International Film Festival.
