Censoring or Cutting Any Authors Original Work in Order To Protect Against Controversial Topics or Create A Better Production Is To A Certain Point Okay
Censoring or cutting any authors original work in order to protect
against controversial topics or create a better production is to a certain
point okay. If having to cut a scene from a production out due to a problem or malfunction is fine but should be listed somewhere inside the production. As seen in “A Raisin in the Sun”, Robert Nemiroff states “Some cuts were similarly the result of happenstance or unpredictables of the kind that occur in any production: difficulties with a scene, the “processes” of actors, the dynamics of staging, etc. But most were related to the length of the play: running time” (Nemiroff 7). In this case cutting an author’s original work is okay as it will improve the performance of the production. As stated by Robert Nemiroff in “A Raisin in the Sun”, “At the time the cuts were made (there were also some very good ones that focused and strengthened the drama), it was assumed by all that they would in no way significantly affect or alter the statement of the play,” (Nemiroff 8). Some cuts that had been made did however improve and strengthen the play. However, cutting an author’s work to protect against controversial topics is not okay. People have freedom of speech and should be able to write what they want to. If a school doesn’t like a book because it includes controversial topics they should just leave it at that and not have the book in their library. Many books are banned and challenged from schools because of controversial topics or vulgar language. For example “Of Mice and Men” is banned and is challenged because of its “profanity”, “offensive and racist language” etc. “Of Mice and Men” is classic American novel that portrays an outlook of the American dream. If schools or community’s don’t like the language or things being said in a book they shouldn’t edit it to make it “better for the community” they should just leave it out of the library or just ignore it because everyone has freedom of speech and should be able to write/say/read what they want. In conclusion, how far should one go before crossing the line of missing the authors overall message.
