Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the problems encountered in learning

mathematics by G-10 Students in Burdeos National High School SY 2018-

2019.

Specifically, it will seek answers to the following questions:

1. What is the profile of G-10 students in terms of:

a. Gender C. Father Occupation

b. Age D. Mother Occupation

2. What is the mathematical average of G -10 students in quarter 1?

3. What are the problems encountered by G-10 students in learning

mathematics?

Significanceof the Study

The following are expected to benefits from this research study:

Students It help them to manage their time wisely.

Teacher It help the teacher to understand the situation of students,

Regarding residence most especially during bad weather.

Parents It help them to make his/her child to go school on time.

Future Researcher serve as basic for future research.

CHAPTER I

The Problem and Its Background

Introduction

The researcher found that neither gender consistently outpaced that other in any state

or at any grade level. Even on test question from the National Assessment of Education

progress that were design to measure complex reasoning skill the gender different were

minuscule accounting to the study.

Student engagement in mathematics refers to student? Motivation to learn

mathematics, their confidence in their ability to succeed in mathematics plays a key role

in the acquisition of math skill and knowledge.

We live in mathematical world. Whenever we decide on a purchase, choose an

insurance or health plan, or use a spreadsheet, we rely on mathematical understanding.

The World Wide Web, CD-ROMs, and other media disseminate vast quantities of

quantitative information. The level of mathematical thinking and problem solving needed

in the workplace has increased dramatically. In such a world , those who understand

and can do mathematics will have opportunities that others do not. Mathematical

competence opens doors to productive futures. A lack of mathematical competence

closes those doors. Students have different abilities, needs, and interest. Yet everyone

needs to be able to use mathematics in his or her personal life, in the workplace, and in

further study. All students deserve an opportunity to understand the power and beauty

of mathematics. Students need to learn a new set of mathematics’ basics that enable

them to compute fluently and to solve problems creatively and resourcefully

It has been long time to discover the importance of mathematics in our world. And these

discoveries lead as to more technological or what so called industrial era, whenever the

different usage of technological device excurse. In this era application of mathematics

helps to develop and invent such technological devices. Through these application our

life became cases. Now or day mathematics in the key to all science.

Mathematics performance has improved again through expecting student to achieve

providing instruction base on individual student needs and using a variety of method to

reach all learners. One factor has been aligning the math our curriculum to ensure that

the delivery of instruction in consistence with the assessment frequency.

This particular study attempts to determine the factor affecting mathematical

performance of Burdeos National High School at Burdeos Quezon Academic Year

2018-2019.

The respondents of the study are the selected grade 10 students of

BNHS for the SY 2018-2019.

Definition of Terms

For better clarification and understanding of the forms related to this

study the following terms are defined as;

Gender – it refers to the Male or Female.

Academic Performance– the grades of the students in 1st Quarter Period

taken from the adviser of the students.

Profile – in this research it pertains to the characteristics of the students.

Problems – things that affect the study of students.

Age – years from birth.

Significant – the importance of one thing.

Family Profile – the state of the Status of the parents.

Review of Related Literature

According to Holm and Kajander (2012) are found the deep conceptual

understanding of elementary mathematics as appropriate forteaching and

good teaching aptitude increasingly though to be important aspects of

elementary teacher capacity.

According to Rodger et. Al. (2007) investigated the effects of teacher

clarity and students anxiety on student outcomes. And they are examined

a possible aptitude treatment interaction between teaching clarity and

student test achievement.

According to Ranganathan (2008) are found the significant positive

relationship between high self- esteem and teaching aptitude and there is

no significant different between males ans females and the level of self-

esteem and teaching aptitude.

According to Yi-Guang (1983) found the Malaysians have more favourable

attitudes towards than Indonesians . males have more positive attitudes

towards mathematics than rural teachers .Males have positive attitudes

towards mathematics than females while females have more positive

aptitudes than males.

According to Patil (1984) are study about attitudestowards Mathematics

and intelligence with teaching in relation with other variables like

achievement, sex etc. of student teachers found that intelligence , attitudes

towards Mathematics and interest are positively correlated with academic

achievement.

According to Saburoh et. Al. (1984) investigated weather attitudes

towards school Mathematics on mathematical achievement differed

between low and high intelligence eight-grade students in three Japanese

School (N=808).Results indicate that the attitudes of low intelligence

student is more important and it affects more in magnitude than that of

highly intelligence students.

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the methodology of the studies. It includes the

research design, population and sample of the study, research instrument

, data gathering procedure and statistical treatment to be used in this

study.

Research Design

This study will use a descriptive survey design. Descriptive design will be

used to describe the demographic profile of G- 10 Students survey will be

used to determine the problems that encountered in learning mathematics

by Grade-10 Students in BNHS.

Population and Sample

The population in this study are the Grade-10 students in BNHS. The

whole population of Grade-10 Students is 273 consisting of 141 Males and

132 Females. Only 162 will be the respondents.

Research instrument

The researchers will use of a self-made questionnaire in gathering

data. The first part will identify the profile of the Grade- 10 students in

5.
Burdeos National High School. The second part will identify the Problems

that Encountered in Learning Mathematics by Grade-10 students in

Burdeos National High School.

Data Gathering Procedure

On the data collection process, the researchers will ask the approval

of school head to administrator and retrieve the questionnaire from the

respondents. After the collecting of the questionnaire, all the answer was

analyzed categorized and tabulated. When the retrieval is done , the set of

the questionnaire will be ended to be ready for the data of processing. To

facilitate the data processing the Microsoft excel will be used.

Statistical Treatment

This study will utilized descriptive statistical Tools in treating the data.

To find the sample of the population solving formula will be used.

ABTRACT

This study aimed to determine the factor that affects the mathematical

performance of Grade 10 student in BNHS for SY 2018-2019. The description

method of research was applied in the study. The researcher made questionnaire

was utilized in gathering data from the respondents consisting of one hundred sixty

two (162)Grade 10 student. Frequency count, percentage, mean and w/m, were

the statistical tools used to describe and interpret the data. The study indicated the

students attitude was a major prediction performance. The study found that there

was a direct relationship between the learning environment created by the intensity

of some of the existing teacher factors and poor performance.
