Formwork Preparation

Seat of the Bench

 Using a sheet of plywood alongside a measuring tape and a pencil, mark the plywood at 2”x
4”x 56”.
And cut using a circular saw

 Using a baulk of pine timber measure four pieces at 2’’x 4’’ x 24” and cut with a circular
saw.

 Measure three pieces of pine timber at 2 x 4 x 48” using a circular saw.

 Gather the four pieces of timber used in step #2. Use only 2 pieces and glue together with
wood glue and screw them together with 3” screws with a hand drill so as to make a single
piece measuring 4”x 4” x 24” . Do this as well for the remaining 2 pieces.
Place wood glue along the ends of the plywood measuring 24” then screw one piece of the 4”
x 4” x 24” timber along each plywood using a hand drill making sure it stays flush with the
plywood
 Gather the four pieces of timber used in step #3. Use only 2 pieces and glue together with
wood glue and screw them together with 3” screws with a hand drill so as to make a single
piece measuring 4”x 4” x 48” . Do this as well for the remaining 2 pieces.
Place wood glue along the ends of the plywood measuring 24” then screw one piece of the 4”
x 4” x 48” timber along each plywood using a hand drill making sure it stays flush with the
plywood.

 Obtain sheet of plywood measuring ½” x 4’x 8’. From the sheet of plywood cut a piece
measuring ½”x 24”x 56” using a circular saw.
 Using 10(2”) nails attach the ½”x 24”x 56” plywood to the glued frame from procedure (5).

 Using a table saw obtain 4 fillets. Two measuring ½”x ½” x 48” and the other two measuring
½”x ½” x 15”.
 Attach the fillets to each of the solid pine timbers base on the size of each fillet. This will
form the complete framework for the seat.
Formwork for the footing of the bench

 Using a table saw to obtain a piece of solid pine timber measuring 2”x 4”x 28”. (x2)

 From the pieces of timber above measure 2”x 4”x14”form both ends of the two pieces of timber.
And cut these measurement with the aid of a table saw. (x4)
 With the aid of a circular saw cut a measurement of ½”x 12”x 14” from the remaining sheet of
plywood in step (6). (x4)

 Using the four pieces 2”x 4”x 14” of pine timbers and the ½”x 12”x 14” of plywood create the bench
footing. The plywood should be fastened onto the pine timbers using 6(4”) bolts for each of the
footing. This will form the completed formwork for the footing.
Assembling the seat and the footing

 With the use of an angle brace attach the footing onto the seat. This will produce the completed
formwork for the cxc outdoor concrete bench.
Steel assemble for Bench of seat
 Cut four pieces of ½” steel measuring 15” in length using the chop saw.

 Cut three pieces of ½” steel measuring 46” in length using the chop saw.

 Tie the pieces of steels together forming a rectangle using twine wire as shown below.
Steel assembly for Bench legs

 Cut four pieces of ½” steel measuring 12” in length using the chop saw.

 Cut four pieces of ½” steel measuring 18” in length using the chop saw.

 Bend the 18” steel 4” from one end of each. (x4)

 Tie two pieces of 12” steel on two pieces of the 18” steel using tine wire to form a
rectangular shape shown below. (x2)
Assembling of concrete Bench
 Place the steel work for the seat inside the framework for the seat.

 Place the steel work for the legs inside the framework for the footing.

 Use six strips of boards to tie the steelwork for the seat and legs to lift them up.
Concrete mixture for concrete Bench
 Using a ratio of 1:4. Using all in 1 gravel mix the cement in order to make the bench, which
will be poured into the formwork.

 After mixing, pour cement into formwork and spreading it with trowel.

 After pouring in, compact using a vibrator or a hammer in order to compact the cement so it
can take the shape of the formwork and to remove air bubbles.
Finishing for concrete Bench
After two to three weeks, take off the framework carefully without breaking anything.
Next plaster will be applied and smoothened out.
After the plaster has dried paint the bench to its designated colour.
