CORMORANT ALPHA DRILLING OPERATIONS GUIDE
RUNNING PIPE (DRILLER)
1. SPECIAL TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT

1) Can be considered a routine operation there for hold toolbox talk and
utilise TRIC card as a risk assessment and lifting plan.
2) Carry out pre-use inspection of all rig floor lifting equipment and
accessories, ensure colour code is current and the SWL is adequate for
the task.
3) Should a problem occur then stop the job and re-assess the situation,
review the risk assessment and lifting plan.
4) The limits defined for pipe buckle.
5) Shut in procedure in the event of a kick.
6) Identification of signals between the derrickman and the Driller.
7) The running speeds at which surging is likely.
8) Identification of the key safety points for pre-job toolbox talks.
9) Crown-o-matic set correctly.
10) The Driller is responsible for supervising the operation.

4.1 PREPARATION
Minimum manning level for the operation would be two Floormen,

Derrickman and Driller.
1) Hold a toolbox talk and ensure that all concerned are aware of the
risks and the controls in place to mitigate them, also that they are
familiar with the lifting plan.
2) Engage the auxiliary brake.
3) Select the correct power assignment.
4) Select the correct gearing.
5) Check the slips and elevators are of the correct type and are
operationally sound.
6) Hold a toolbox talk.
7) Place the crew accordingly.
8) Put the mud monitoring equipment into the mode for running in.
9) Unlock the blocks swivel mechanism.
10) Supervise the installation of a hobble.
4.2 PERFORMING
Elevators open and free of the tooljoint at floor level.
1) Engage high high or the highest gearing available.
2) Accelerate to full throttle over a two second period.
3) Maintain full throttle until the blocks are approximately twenty feet
below the monkey board.
(This height varies according to block weight and lines strung).
4) Release the throttle.
5) Allow the blocks to continue past the monkey board.
6) As the Derrickman lays the stand into the elevators disengage the
clutch.
7) Permit the momentum of the drum and blocks to raise the stand.

8) Apply the friction brake in a smooth manner to stop raising the stand
when the stands pin end is above the tool joint in the table.
9) When the Floorman has centred the pin end over the box lower the
blocks until the joint is fully in the box and enough space is left between
the elevators and the tool joint to allow for make up.
10) Make up the connection to the correct torque.
11) Engage high low gear and apply enough throttle in a controlled manner
to raise the string sufficiently for the slips to be pulled.
12) Disengage the clutch and engage the auxiliary brake.
13) Control the descent of the string (tripping speeds are dictated by hole
conditions and string make up).
14) Monitor the weight indicator during this period (do not set more than
the B.H.A. weight down when first encountering hole problems).
15) When the elevators are approximately fifteen feet above the table slow
the strings descent to allow safe setting of the slips.
16) Transfer full braking control from the auxiliary brake to the friction
brake only when the slips are round the pipe but not set.
17) Control the transfer of string weight from the elevators to the slips by
lowering the string with the friction brake only.
18) When the slips are set lower the blocks until the elevators fall free of
the tool joint.
19) Stop the descent and permit the elevators to be opened.
5. ON COMPLETION
1) Check floor area for any potential hazards which may have arisen.
RUNNING PIPE (DERRICKMAN)
1) Safety harness.
2) "Belly" ropes.
3) Inertia reel safety line.
4) Running in ropes.

5) Monkey board and fingers.
6) Monkey board tugger and controls.

1) Routine operation, therefor hold a toolbox talk and utilise Tric card as a

2) Carry out pre-use inspection of all derrick lifting equipment and

accessories. Ensure colour code is current and the SWL is adequate
for the task.
3) Should a problem occur or the plan changes then stop the job and re-
assess the situation, review the risk assessment and lifting plan.
4) The harness is checked for damage and remedial action taken if

necessary.
5) The inertia safety reel is function tested. (A sharp pull on the line should
activate).
6) Check all ropes for fraying or damage, replace if necessary.
7) Check the board matting is secure and in good condition.
8) The safety line is securely attached to the harness and anchor by the
appropriate method.
9) Hard had and chin strap to be worn at all times.
10) Visually check the board and fingers.
11) Remove any knots in the rope.

12) When running in a back stand or one close to the back, take into
consideration the effect that the angle may have on the elevators if the
pipe is allowed to make contact with the side of the pipe guide. In most
cases, the elevators will turn by a few degrees making the insertion of
the pipe difficult. If this has happened, rather than putting your hands
in danger, let the stand drop.

13) When a dropped stand is being pulled back with the floor tugger, stay
within the board area until the stand is alongside the board.
(R)
14) If considerations change enough to present problems, stop your present
operation until you can take stock of the situation before deciding on
the appropriate action. This means anything that could cause problems.
(R)
15) If under the circumstances the problem is one which you have no
experience of, call the Driller to discuss the actions to be taken.
4. PROCEDURES
4.1 PREPARATION
2) Don the harness and ensure a snug fit prior to accessing the board.
3) Adjust the belly rope so that when leaning into it you can reach the
elevator horns comfortably.
This is a variable due to stature.
4) Adjust the running in rope to give enough rope to go around the pipe,
and have six inches spare when the pipe is being held back by the rope
at the front of the board prior to running.
5) Ensure that the elevators are lined up correctly and that position is
confirmed with the floorman.
4.2 PERFORMANCE (from the right hand side)
1) Select the stand to be run.
2) Feed the running in rope behind the stand from right to left and back
under itself.
3) Tension up on rope and maintain this with the right hand.
4) Open the finger.
5) Pull the pipe from the finger in to the "alley".
(Use the rope to effect the pull).
6) "Work" the stand to the front of the board maintaining tension on the
rope with the right hand.

(As boards vary in design the "front" is classified as the area from which
the pipe will be run. However, care must be taken not to allow contact
between the moving blocks, the board and the stand).
7) Take up a stance at the end of the board with knees bent and feet
securely placed ready to run the stand.
8) When the blocks and pipe guide pass the board, lean into the belt
simultaneously releasing the running in rope and guiding the stand into
the open elevators.
9) Latch the elevators by squeezing the horns together.
Care must be exercised to avoid catching the left thumb between

the horn and the pipe. Failure to do this could result in severe
personal injury, if the stand of pipe does not go into the open
elevators, do not attempt to stop the travel of the pipe by holding
onto the elevators. The stand of pipe can be recovered by
alternative measures.
10) Remain leaning into the belly rope. Once the blocks pick up the stand.
11) Grasp the stand and "kill off" any swing generated by the lifting and by
the make up.
12) Once the pipe has been spun up return to the upright position on the
board.
5. ON COMPLETION
1) Close off vacant finger and prepare to run the next stand.

RUNNING PIPE (FLOORMAN)
1) Rig tongs. }
} Iron roughneck
2) Pipe spinner. }
3) Drill pipe slips.
4) Drill pipe dope.
1) Routine operation, there for hold toolbox talk and utilise Tric card as a
risk assessment and or lifting plan.
3) A competent person should carry out pre-use inspection of all rig floor
lifting equipment. Ensure colour code is current and the SWL adequate
for the task.
4) Should a problem occur or the plan changes then stop the job and re-
assess the situation, review the risk assessment and lifting plan.
4) The work area must be kept clean and tidy.
5) All tailing operations to be carried out with a rope.
6) Any obstacles to the passage of the stands from the racking area to the
rotary are removed.
7) All snub lines, anchor points and shackles required are checked for
faults, certification and suitability.
8) Appropriate personal safety equipment is worn.
9) Tongs can be securely tied back when not in use.
10) Knowledge of the correct gripping techniques on elevators and slips.
11) The Driller is the responsible person in charge of the operation.
4. PROCEDURES

MEN REQUIRED: THREE FLOORMEN.
TWO FLOORMEN IF AUTO SLIPS AND IRON

ROUGHNECK ARE IN USE.
4.1 PREPARATION
2) Ensure the elevators are of the correct type and rating, correctly
installed and are operationally sound.
3) Install an hobble.
4) Hook up the make up chain, change the snub lines as required by the rig
lay out and make secure all shackles.
5) Grease and lubricate the rig tongs inspect the tong dies and change out
any worn or damaged ones.
6) Ensure tong jaw size is correct.
7) Ensure that table inserts are of the correct type.
8) Ensure that slips are of the correct size and type, are operationally
sound and are lubricated correctly.
9) Rig the pipe spinner for make up.
10) Have the correct dope and brush available on the floor, although it is
practice to dope on the way out.
11) Have chalk or a paint stick ready for pipe marking.
4.2 PERFORMANCE
Pipe set in the slips elevators being run up the derrick.
Three floormen are required to perform this task but each has a separate role to
play.
They can be identified for purpose of explanation as A, B, and C.
1) Man 'A' raps the tailing rope behind the pipe from left to right and
maintains a tension on the rope.
Man 'B' places the make up tongs on the tool joint in the table and holds
the break out tong ready for installation.

Man 'C' frees the pipe spinner from its securing mechanism and holds it
ready for passage and installation on the stand.
2) As the stand is raised by the blocks Man 'A' controls its passage
towards the rotary with the rope, until the last six inches where he
grasps the tool joint between his shoulder and forearm and steadies
it over the box for lowering.
Care must be taken to avoid pinch points between the tong and the
pipe. Also avoid placing legs under the tong during lowering.
3) After stabbing the joint, Man 'A' places himself in a position to operate
the make up tong and also aid Man 'C' to install the pipe spinner.
4) As Man 'C' spins the pipe Man 'A' lifts the make up tong onto the pin
tool joint.
5) Man 'B' installs the break out tong on the box tool joint.
6) Man 'C' removes the pipe spinner when satisfied that the pipe can turn
no more and ties the spinner back.
7) Men 'A' and 'B' now make their tongs bite and the driller tightens the
connection.
8) Men 'A' and 'B' now unlatch each others tongs.
The bottom tong must be unlatched and swung out first to avoid the
possibility of catching fingers between the top tong latch and the
hanging arm of the bottom tong.
9) Men 'A' and 'B' now swing the tongs free of the pipe maintaining
contact with the tong with one hand and grasping a slip handle with the
other.
10) Man 'C' grasps the third handle and the three men pull the slips when
the string is raised, placing them securely on table.
Care must be taken to ensure proper kinetic handling techniques are

used when pulling the slips.
11) Men 'A' and 'B' now secure their tongs.
12) As the elevators near the floor the three men position themselves
roughly behind each slip segment, grasp a handle with one hand reach
up and brace against the elevators with other. (Avoiding possible pinch
points).
The slips are now lifted around the pipe and lowered into the setting
position inconjunction with the controlled deceleration of the pipe.

Setting height normally puts the top of the tool joint box three feet
above the table.
13) When the elevator comes free of the pipe if necessary turn them to line
up with the derrickman's directions.
14) Unlatch the elevator and push gently with the palms of both hands on
the horns holding the elevator off the tool joint as the blocks are raised.
5. ON COMPLETION
1) Clean up any mud spills.
2) Prepare for the next stand.

"POST SCRIPT"
DRIFTING DRILL PIPE
1. SAFETY INFORMATION
1) Ensure access to drill floor has been barriered off to prevent

unauthorised personnel entering the area.
2) Toolbox Talk to be held with work party prior to start and when any
new personnel become involved.
3) The rotary table and racking area must be vacated during the time when
the rabbit is being raised and inserted into the pipe.
4) If the rabbit has not struck the racking area there is a likelihood that it
may dislodge and fall once the stand is picked up. Care must be
exercised to ensure that if it does fall no damage is done to either
personnel or equipment.
5) Ensure that the Driller knows immediately the stand is picked up that
the rabbit has or has not come out of the pipe.
6) If the rabbit has not dropped never raise the bottom of the stand above
the level of the tool joint in the slips.
7) Ensure the rabbit is securely attached to the elevator horn.
8) Never look up a stand to check for obstructions.
1) The correct diameter drift for the drill pipe in use.
3. PROCEDURE
The pipe is being run in the hole. The elevators are at the floor and unlatched.
1) Attach drift to elevator horn and check if secure.
2) Install a protector or lift cap in the box of the pipe is in the slips.

3) The Floormen retire to a position of safety away from the table and
racking area.
4) The Driller now raises the blocks until they are ± 3 ft above the monkey
board. (A chalk mark on the drilling line can be used to give the same
height.)
5) The Derrickman will now remove the rabbit maintaining a grip of the
eye.
6) The Derrickman then inserts the rabbit into the next stand to be run. (If
the access is difficult the rabbit must be secured while this is carried out
and if appropriate use an additional man to insert the rabbit.)
7) The Derrickman then runs the stand into the elevators and signals the
Driller.
8) The Floormen now return to the table and racking area.
9) The man stabbing will inform the Driller if the rabbit has or has not left
the pipe.
10) The protector is removed.
11) Place the rabbit in a secure area until the stand is run then repeat.
NOTE: If the rabbit fails to come out, the stand must be broken down in the
mousehole and the rabbit located and freed.
Any pipe which do not rabbit must be clearly identified and laid to the
side for remedial action.
Only have one rabbit in use at any one time. (Driller to check and
confirm rabbit numbers before and after task and at each handover.)
5. ON COMPLETION
1) Inspect the rabbit for damage.
2) Store the rabbit.

APPENDIX 1.7
RETRIEVING DROPPED STAND OF DRILL PIPE
1) Monkey board air winch.

2) Safety harness (attached).
3) Man riding winch (if applicable).

DOG Section 1.34 Safety Concerning use of Man Riding Winch
1) Should be considered a non-routine operation, therefor an

additional lifting plan and risk assessment should be made out.
2) Competent person should carry out a pre-use inspection of all lifting

equipment and accessories, ensure that the colour code is valid and the
SWL is adequate for the task.
3) Refer to the relevant section in DOG for man riding winch operations.
4) No travelling block movement whilst man rider is in derrick.
5) Safety harness to be worn at all times whilst on monkey board or

outside handrails around racking area.
4. PROCEDURES
(MEN REQUIRED : 2 FLOORMEN and DERRICKMAN (WHERE

APPLICABLE)
4.1 PREPARATION

2) Derrickman to position monkey board winch where stand can be pulled

into space between fingers and board.
3) “Pay out” sufficient line to reach dropped stand.
4) Man rider to be prepared in the event the stand is not accessible from
the walkway.
4.2 PERFORMANCE
1) Derrickman to wrap chain of monkey board winch around box of

dropped stand and secure hook.
2) Derrickman returns to board and proceeds to pull stand back with the
winch and places stand in a vacant finger slot. Remove the winch.
3) If, however, the dropped stand is not accessible to the Derrickman,

a Floorman will be sent up on a man rider to attach the winch to the
dropped stand.
4) Bring Floorman back down to rig floor. Continue as per step 2.
5. ON COMPLETION
1) Derrickman will signal Driller to lower the travelling blocks, so that the
elevators are at the correct height to re-run the dropped stand.
2) Run stand as per normal tripping procedure.
N.B. DRILL FLOOR AIR HOISTS WILL NOT BE USED TO

RECOVER STANDS DROPPED IN THE DERRICK : Unless in
exceptional circumstances, where Derrickman cannot recover dropped
stands with his own equipment. Full risk assessment will take place at
this time, with all parties involved. Also lifting plan will be reviewed.
The person working the derrick has full control of the air hoists in the
derrick and shall use intercom system between derrick and Drillers’
doghouse, to ensure floor hands are aware of task being undertaken or
to request assistance.
