INFRASTRUCTURE:

‰ Infrastructure is the basic physical and organizational structures

needed for the operation of a society or enterprise, or the services
and facilities necessary for an economy to function.
function The term
typically refers to the technical structures that support a society,
housing colony, such as roads, water supply, sewers, grids,
telecommunications etc.etc The infrastructure definition says that
anything that forms the core of the functioning of any country is
infrastructure.

‰ The quality of life in any urban or rural centers depend upon the

TYPES OF INFRASTRUCTURE :

Physical infrastructure: Social infrastructure:

™ Sewerage ™ Health

™ Water supply ™ Education

™ Road network ™ Park and open spaces

™ Drainage ™ Community facilities

™ Solid waste ™ Socio-cultural facilities

™ Electricity

™ Telecommunication
IMPORTANT FACTS ABOUT INFRASTRUCTURE FACILITIES:

‰ Adequate water,
water power,
power drainage and sewerage facilities are the
basic needs of human life.

‰ Their standards vary according to climate, economic and other

conditions.

‰ The norms for infrastructure facilities should be p

perspectively
p yggraded
to allow for incremental upgradation with time, increase in the standard
of living and affordability levels of people.

‰ The assessment of housing infrastructure has to take into account:

A) Both present population and future additions in population.
B) Quantity and quality of service.
C) Existing gaps and future requirements based on
assumption of rising levels of standards of service
provisions.
D) Financial sustainability.
sustainability
E) Minimum affordable standards.
F) Incremental improvement in the quality of services.
ADVANTAGES OF HOUSING INFRASTRUCTURE:

‰Investment in infrastructure promotes economic growth by

increasing productivity, competition and trade.

‰Improved access of poor communities to roads, water supply and

sanitation can result in increased household income by improving
health and productivity.

‰Availability of good quality infrastructure is a critical factor in

contributing to economic growth.
CAUSES OF INADEQUATE HOUSING INFRASTRUCTURE:

‰ One of the key reasons for the poor status of infrastructure is

the excessive emphasis on capital investments without proper
prioritization and planning.
planning

‰ Another key reason is the lack of appropriate approach and

emphasis towards maintenance of the created infrastructure. For
infrastructure sector to be effective and efficient, there should be
healthy relationship between investment and maintenance.

‰ Weak relationship between investments in infrastructure and

economic growth.

‰ Governments are significantly underfunding infrastructure, and

private sector investment is not filling the gap because of the
regulatory and other challenges of operating in many areas.

What is equally well known is that lack of infrastructure as one of the biggest
bottlenecks hampering growth. At HDIL, we have worked closely with several statutory
agencies to enable the creation of infrastructure. We have numerous examples of the
land that was earlier encroached by slums but today,
today roads and pipelines run through
these spaces. The sky concept of rehabilitation makes creation of infrastructure a
reality. HDIL is contributing to nearly every aspect of infrastructure growth.

R li
Reliance Infrastructure:
I f t t

It is India's largest private sector power utility enterprise and has been the pioneer in
the Indian infrastructure sector. In the infrastructure space, their focus has been on
roads, urban infrastructure including the MRTS, Sealink and Airports, Specialty Real
Estate (business districts, trade towers, convention centre).
IRB Infrastructure Developers:

IRB Infrastructure Developers Ltd. had undertaken development of different

infrastructure projects in the road sector right from its conceptualization. It has
constructed, operated
p and maintained around 1200 kms of road length g till
now.

GMR Infrastructure:

With interests in the Airports, Energy, Highways and Urban infrastructure

(including SEZ) sector, GMR Group has been the pioneer in the core
infrastructure areas.
CONCLUSION:
Thus infrastructure bottlenecks emerged as one of the key
challenges. Another key challenge having implications for
infrastructure investment is related to improving the efficiency of
public finance management since significant proportion of public
expenditure is associated with
infrastructure investment.

The poor fiscal status of centre and states has created a huge gap
between the resources required
q to p
provide adequate
q infrastructure
and the resources that are currently available.
