REGULATION 2013
SIXTH SEMESTER
AE 6613 – Computer Aided Simulation Lab

1. Generate an orthogonal grid over NACA 0012 airfoil (use the given airfoil coordinates). Explain
the steps involved. 100

2. Create a convergent divergent nozzle and generate a structured mesh. Simulate flow through it
to obtain supersonic flow at the exit by applying proper boundary conditions. Write down the
theoretical relations used. 100

3. Create an orthogonal mesh over a biconvex airfoil. Simulate M=2 flow over it to see wave
pattern as the flow expands. Discuss the important observations through plots and contours.
Write down the theoretical relations related to the waves you encounter in this problem. 100

4. Create an orthogonal mesh over a turbine blade. Simulate M=0.8 and T = 1500K flow over it.
Discuss the steps involved, important observations through plots and contours. 100

5. Create a supersonic diffuser and generate a structured mesh. Simulate flow through it by
applying proper boundary conditions. Discuss the steps involved, important observations
through plots and contours. 100

6. a. Make the structural analysis of the aircraft fuselage for the given condition as 0.5 bar
ambient conditions as shown in the figure. Assume the material used is aluminium and predict
whether design is safe or failure occurs to the applied pressure. 75

b. Explain the construction details of the fuselage 25

7.a. Make the structural analysis of the wing ( using the given igs file) when the wing is subjected to a
load of 50 Kn on the upper surface of the wing and load of 20kn is applied at the end the wing and the
wing is fixed at one end. Assume the material used is aluminium and predict whether wing is safe or
failure occurs to the applied load. 75

b. Explain the construction details of the wing assembly and draw the shear force and bending
moment for the wing shown in the figure. 25

8.a. Make the structural analysis of the fuselage (using the given igs file) when the fuselage is
subjected to a inside pressure of 10kn/m 2 and the fuselage is fixed at both the end. Assume the
material used is aluminium and predict whether fuselage is safe or failure occurs to the applied load.
75

b. Explain the types of airplane fuselage construction? 25

9.a. Consider a metal matrix composite plate of dimension 0.4x0.4 cm 2. It consists of three layers. The
top and bottom layer is made up of glass fiber of 0 and 90 o ply orientation. The mid layer is made up of
aluminium. Make the structural analysis of the composite plate when the plate is fixed at both the
ends and load of 50 kN is applied over the composite material. 75

b. Explain different types of composites. 25

10.a. Consider a metal matrix composite plate of dimension 0.4x 0.4 cm 2. It consists of three layers.
The top and bottom layer is made up of glass fiber of 0 and 90 o ply orientation. The mid layer is made
up of steel. Make the thermo structural analysis of the composite plate when the plate is fixed at both
the ends and load of 50 kN is applied over the composite material and the material is subjected to a
final temperature of 100oc. The plate is initially at room temperature. 75
