This method statement sets out the principles that must be followed when working near
t,'ees on the site at Wishanger Manor. It has been prepared for both for submission to the
local authority for information purposes, and for guidance to the contractor on site.
It sets out
Damage to the roots or degradation of the soil due to compaction and / or excavation is
likely to cause serious damage to trees.
Root Protection Areas are the areas, surrounding the trees which are to be retained on site,
where disturbance must be minimised.
Root Protection Areas are "equired around all trees to be retained, howeve,', for many t,'ees
located far from the construction works the presence of Root Protection Areas will have no
relevance to the day to day operation of the site. For those near the site working areas Root
Protection Areas must be calculated and measu"es taken to protect the ground from
disturbance 0" compaction.
The methodology for calculating Root Protection Areas is set out in BS5B37.
There are various methods of calculating and adjusting Root Protection Areas, howeve,', in its
simplest form the Root Protection Area of a tree is a circle centred on the tree trunk where
it meets the ground.
• The radius of the Root Protection Area for a single stem tree is most simply
calculated by measuring its diameter (in metres) at I .Smetres above ground level and
mUltiplying it by 12.
• The radius of the Root Protection Area for a mulit-stem tree is most simply calculated
by measuring its diameter (in metres) immediately above the root flare and
multiplying it by 10.
As an example. a single stem tree with a stern diameter of 600l11m (0.6m) at I .Sm above
ground level witt have a l'Oot protection area with a radius of 0.6 x 12 = 7.2m.
Protective fencing around the site is to consist of the working site boundary fencing. tree
protection fencing and other general site control fencing.
Heras fencing is to be used around the working site boundary to secure the site.
Whel'e immediately adjacent to tree Root Protection Areas Heras fencing shatt be used and
shall be locally braced and wil'ed to a scaffolding framework as shown in the images below
and on drawings 359.002 and 359.003 (see appendix I).
Where site working areas and tree protection requirements meet. the tree protection
fencing shatt double as site fencing.
Away (rom Root Protection Areas and working site areas, post and rail (ences may be used
to control other site operations and orange ba lTier (encing may be used (or temporary
requirements,
Within the root protection area, to the tree side o( the protective barrie r the (ollowing must
be stri ctly observed:
• No vehicular access, unless on protected ground (see below),
• No storage o( any materials,
• No sel-vice installations,
• No excessive cultivation (o r landscape installations,
• No fires,
The construction haul road I pelmanent driveway into the site, and various other site areas
pass through I lie within a number o( Root Protection Areas, In these al'eas there is potential
(o r damage to tree roots by physical changes in ground levels and by soil compactio n,
In small short-lived areas o( construction wor-l(s (less than two weeks) where access is
required into Root Protection Areas, prior to commencing operations the Root Protection
Area may be protected by covering with sid e ab utting sca((old boards laid o n a compress ible
(oam layer over a geotextile fabri c (BS5837 Figure 3) ,
In the majority o( areas, however, a "Cell Web" 'detail shall be adopted that shall allow
movements of gasses ancl water into the soil; that shall spread the loads to prevent localised
so il compaction; and that I'equires no excavation (no-dig construction), Details o( the "Cell
Web " product are contained within appendix 3.
T he exact "Cell We b" detail w ill be determined by the project engineer acco rding to soi l
bearing capacity, however, drawing 359.00 I (see appendix 2) shows the principles o( the
system which is used as (ollows:
• In areas below trees where there is no grass there shall be no excavatio ns, O nly
leaf littel' de bl'is are to be removed (to a maximum depth of 50mm) prio r to
progress ing,
• In grassed areas the grass sward shall be carefull y scraped off (to a maximum
depth of 50mm) prio r to progl'essing,
• PriOl' t o laying the geotextile and "Cell Web" system. low points in the surface
shall be made up using sharp sand, T his must not be compacted ,
• T he "Cell Web " system shall t hen be laid on the prepared su!'face as specified by
t he project engineer. and as generally detailed o n drawing 359.00 I,
• A protective layel' of stone shall be laid on the surface to protect the "Cell We b"
during the constructio n period,
2, During constructio n.
• The protec tive layer of stone shall be mainta ined th ro ughout the construction
period to prevent da mage to t he cell web system,
• O n completion of the develo pment the "Cell Web" system in all temporal'y areas
is to be removed entirely,
Structures requiring foundatio ns in areas not previo usly built upo n within Root Protection
Areas have generally been avoided o n site, T he exceptio n to this lies at the site entrance w ith
the proposed new site access wall and gate pi ers,
A new wall is requil'ed within Root Pl"Otection Areas at the entrance to the site where the
site access is being re -modelled (I'efer to sketch by Relph Ross Partnership - appendix 4),
In thi s location a conventional strip foundati on will not be possible as traditional foundations
would require unacceptabl e levels of excavation, It is therefore pl"Oposed that root
disturbance be minimised by supporting the wall on a beam set above ground level on small
diameter "micro piles", This w ill be detailed by the project architect / engineer, in such a
way as to ensure that the final design is sufficiently flexible to allow the piles to be moved if
significant 1"00ts (over 25 mm diameter) are encountered in the preferred pi le locations,
Prior to commencing operations in this area, the Root I'l"Otection Area of adjacent trees
(Within t he working area required for piling and building the wall) is to be protected by
covering with abutting sca((old boards laid on a compressible foam layer over a geotextile
fabric, Gaps in this ground protecti on should be left where it is expected to install the piles,
Pile locations should initially be dug by hand to a depth of 750mm to establish if there are any
significant 1"00ts, If significant roots are found then the pile location should be moved slightly
and a new t ri al hole dug by hand ,
O nce the piles have been installed there should be no fUrlhel' excavation, T he lowest point
of the supporting beam is to be above the gro und level between the piles,
Gate piers
The gate piers require relatively limited excavations in specific locations and shall be
constructed on traditional excavated foundations, Whel'e these al'e located within Root
Protection Areas the surrounding ground shall be protected w ith abutting sca ffold boards laid
on a compl'essible foam laycl' over a geotextile fabric, and excavati ons shall be undertaken by
hand , Excavations shall be kept to the absolute minimum required,
Services
Services routes w ill t herefore be located to avoid tree Root Protection Areas by picking up
existing services at the base of the existing driveway, passing between the relocated stables
and the proposed new offices and through the adjacent paddock to the new house along the
route shown on drawing 359-03 (refer to Appendix 5),
Soft landscaping activities within tree Root Protection Areas can be damaging to tree roots,
No Significant excavation or cultivations will be permitted within Root Protection Areas, All
planting within Root Pl"Otection Al'eas will be by hand into hand dug pits and no powered
machinelY will be permitted (especially rotovators),
Excavations within Root Protection Areas for the gate piers and micro piles shall be
undertaken with a qualified arboriculturalist present to minimise the risk of misunderstanding
or misinterpretation.
All excavation within Root Protection Areas will be undeltaken with hand tools taking care
not to damage the bark and wood of any 1"00ts discovered, Specialist tools using comp,'essed
air (an air lance) may also be used,
In all excavations (including (01' new planting), wherevel' possible smaller fl exible 1"00ts should
be retained if they can be displaced temporarily or permanently beyond the excavation
without damage, Roots gl'eater than 25mtn diameter shall be retained wherevel' possible,
Any largel' roots exposed during the excavations of the holes for the gate piers shall be cut
cleanly with a sharp saw or secateurs 10 .. 20cm behind the face of the excavation but no 1"00ts
in excess of 10cm will be cut without prior consultation with the supervising arboriculturalist,
