The themes that will cohere all of our engagement and communications in 2019/20 have been approved
by CGS and, in priority order, are:

Each theme will focus on demonstrating opportunity for all and resilience (both personal and
institutional) as well as promoting the Army’s role in UK Prosperity wherever appropriate. Our message

The #YourArmy recruiting campaign
has proved a resounding success, with
the highest number of applications ever
recorded for the month of January. In the

MSKI is a complex and growing problem. It is the primary cause of medical

OPSMART
THE ARMY’S MENTAL FITNESS PROGRAMME
Mental health problems are widespread
throughout society, yet they are often hidden.
For the Army, the mental health and wellbeing
of our people is a priority. Mental ill health is

The Army is continuously reviewing how we build the mental fitness
and support the wellbeing of our soldiers. We call our mental fitness
campaign ‘OPSMART’- Optimising Human Performance Through
Stress Management and Resilience Training. OPSMART draws
on research-based evidence to improve the resilience of both Regular
and Reserve soldiers.

ARMY STAFF TALKS

Army Staff Talks (ASTs) are the primary method
for bringing coherence across the Army for all
International Activity with some of our closest
allies and partners.
They are held annually, alternating between
the UK and the Partner Nation.
Army International Branch (AIB) in the

Directorate of Engagement and Communications CANADA 2* LEVEL
are based in Main Building. AIB leads ASTs
with support from Army HQ and the Field Army.
This is done in support of Defence Objectives

ARMY GETS ITS FIRST ARES

The Army has received its first two ARES
vehicles this month. ARES is the armoured
personnel carrier version of AJAX and is
designed to carry Armoured Cavalry soldiers
for dismounted tasks in support of mounted
operations. The first ARES vehicles will go to
the Armour Centre in Bovington and the Defence
School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering
in Lyneham where they will be used to prepare
operator and maintainer courses. The Household
Cavalry Regiment will begin their conversion to
ARES in Autumn this year.
ARES is part of the AJAX family of vehicles
with the other variants arriving later this year.
Each AJAX variant will be a highly-agile, tracked,
medium-weight armoured fighting vehicle,
providing us with state-of-the-art best-in-class
protection.
Each AJAX has extensive capabilities, including
acoustic detectors, a laser warning system, a
local situational awareness system, an electronic
countermeasure system, a route marking system,
an advanced electronic architecture and a high-
performance power pack.
AJAX will transform the way the Armoured
Infantry, Recconaissance Units and STRIKE
brigades operate. It provides a world-leading
platform capable of surveillance, target
acquisition, reconnaissance and armoured
action. Its introduction, and role in STRIKE,
will underpin the ability to war fight at the
divisional level.

AUTONOMOUS WARRIOR (LAND)

Autonomous Warrior (Land) was the culmination of
the Army Warfighting Experiment 2018 programme.
It was a 4-week collaborative exercise between
the Army and industry to test cutting edge
experimentation in an operational scenario.
The exercise ran from 12 Nov to 12 Dec 18 with visitor days on
the 11 and 12 Dec. The experiment tested 71 systems from 40
different Industrial Companies. The Royal Marines, US Army, and
the British Army worked together to test the systems in demanding
tactical scenarios. The findings of the experiments will be briefed
at the Autonomous Warrior Exploitation Conference at the Science
Museum on 5 Mar 19.
