Sustainable dispersing

agents for
LABEL-FREE PIGMENT
PREPARATIONS
Meeting today’s formulation
requirements

Aqueous pigment preparations used as colorants or in-plant tinters are stabilized by the aid of high
performance dispersing agents. Dispersing agents control the rheology of pigment preparations, provide
compatibility with the selected coatings and enable maximum color development of the pigment in
the coated film.

In the selection of the most appropriate dispersing agent, paint formulators nowadays also need
to take the products’ sustainability profile into account. Driven by the rising consumer demand for
safer paints, aspects such as low VOC or ecolabel suitability are becoming more and more important.
Additionally regulatory requirements such as the EU CLP directive on the classification, labeling
and packaging of chemicals (effective for mixtures as of 1st of June 2015) narrow down the choice of
dispersing agents if a paint producer wants to avoid a hazardous labeling on the final product

Our range of dispersing agents underwent a thorough sustainability screening process and have been
evaluated against 36 sustainability criteria. The products were classified as “sustainable products” or
have even been awarded the EcoTain® label, being best-in-class sustainability products.

Recommendation

Depending on the application area (point-of- sales colorants or in-plant tinters), the end-use system
(water-borne or universal) and the pigment type (organic or inorganic) as well as the intended pig-
ment concentration, we recommend single products or product combinations to achieve the optimum
performance for your label-free pigment preparation.

INORGANIC PIGMENT PREPARATIONS

For point-of-sales colorants as well as for in-plant tinters based on inorganic pigments Clariant
recommends a combination of Dispersogen® LFS and Dispersogen® MT 200 if the end-use system is
water-borne. A pigment load of up to 60% is easily achievable.

Dispersogen® AN 200 is the product of choice for universal pigment pastes and forms free flowing
pigment pastes even at a high load of inorganic pigment (65-70%).

ORGANIC PIGMENT PREPARATIONS

Clariant offers polymeric and surfactant-based dispersing agents for the dispersion of organic pig-
ments. For application in water-borne end-use systems Dispersogen® PL 30 is highly recommended
as a polymeric dispersing agent which shows excellent performance compared to benchmark
products (as shown in graph 1 and 2). Beside its ability to form stable low viscous pigment pastes,
Dispersogen® PL 30 can also improve the colour development in tinted paints (see graph 3).

Surfactant-based dispersing agents such as Dispersogen® PTS and Dispersogen® ECS demonstrated
good performance properties in forming low viscous pigment pastes while providing a well balanced
cost-performance profile (see graph 1 and 2). Dispersogen® ECS is especially suitable for universal
systems where compatibility to water borne and solvent borne end-use systems is required.
