on World Yoga Day
Yogathon – Health for Humanity event
is returning to New Zealand cities and
towns this June on Saturday, June 15 and
will continue until Friday, June 28, 2019.
Yogathon launch event will take place

Auckland, Hamilton and Wellington.
This year’s Yogathon – Health for
Humanity event is happening when entire
world is going celebrate International
Yoga day on 21st June in mid of Yogathon

Yogathon New Zealand, a division of
Hindu Council of New Zealand, has been

spirit in balance with each other.
The participants aim to collectively
perform 108,000 repetitions of ‘Surya
Namaskar’ (Sun Salutation) over a
period of 2 weeks. A repetition of Surya
Namaskar consists of a series of yoga
postures of well-balanced movements
linked with simple breathing techniques.

A wonderful evening, an initiative by
MP Michael Wood on behalf of Labour
MPs for bringing people from different
backgrounds and religious faiths together,
was organised at the Western Springs
Community Hall on Sunday, May 26.
Michael Wood stood by the entrance of
the community hall greeting the guests
and giving them a warm welcome as he
ushered them in along with Dr. Deborah
Russell and Priyanca Radhakrishnan.
There was a large cross section of guests
from a diverse set of ethnic backgrounds
who were seated together at long tables.
For Iftar, there were dates and water with
snacks to open the fast in the traditional
way. While the Azaan was read, everyone
opened the fast after which there was
a break for prayers. Prayer halls were
assigned for men and women to pray.
Soon after the prayers, there were
speeches by prominent members. There
was an elaborate dinner, nothing short of
a feast, waiting for the guests, complete
with Veg and Non-veg buffet options
including mouth-watering delicious
biryani.
Michael Wood explained, “During
Ramadan, the Muslim community fasts
between sunrise and sunset. The fast is
then broken with the meal of Iftar. This is
a time when families and communities
gather together, and increasingly in
New Zealand Iftar meals are a time
for inter-faith discussion and building
good relationships between different
communities. This year's Ramadan will
take on a unique significance given our
nation's recent tragedy, and the new spirit
of understanding and solidarity into
which we have entered as one people.
Myself and my colleagues look very
much forward to continued engagement
with our Muslim brothers and sisters
throughout this auspicious month.
Powerful speeches were delivered by

during the programme, as everybody
present heard with rapt attention. The
entire programme was organised with
utmost care and precision and with an
eye for detail. Such initiatives are truly
powerful to help combat the divisive and

of Ethnic Communities to play its part

Once the most powerful woman in the
United Nations and one of the longest
serving prime ministers of New Zealand,
Clark is passing on her knowledge in
her new role as global patron of the
International Working Group (IWG) for
Women in Sport, and Women in Sport
Aotearoa - an organisation that advocates
for change in sport for women and girls.

was that no one opened the door and said,
‘Helen, come on in, it's yours’. You have to
fight every step of the way,” she says. “And
that's going to be the case with all these

government. However, Shah himself has
always evaded an answer to this stating
that he is not in the know of the matter.
According to sources, around 60 to 66 new
ministers could be sworn-in on May 30.

First Time Buyers Look to Alternative ways To Buy
OCR cuts may have had a small boost to
the residential market, but it seems some
investors are moving their portfolios into
the commercial property market. First-time
buyers are increasingly looking at kit-set
homes to buying their first homes.
Here’s what you need to know:
Investors Moving to
Commercial Property Grows
Those that are watching the commercial
property market are witnessing an
emerging trend of residential property
investors starting to leave the residential
market in Auckland, where prices have
been largely flat for the last three years and
yields remain persistently low, and instead
investing in commercial property. Experts
have indicated that this move is largely due
to investors finding the net yields of around
5-6% offered in the smaller commercial
properties market.
It is believed that some investors with
residential portfolios seem to be cashing
up and putting the money into commercial
properties instead. Real Estate Agency
Bayleys revealed that sales are slowing at
residential properties, but they are seeing a
significant “air of buoyancy” at their latest
commercial property auctions. There was
competitive bidding on most of the eleven
offerings on the Order of Sale, sales were
achieved on eight of 11, giving an overall
sales clearance rate of 72%.
With many investors holding off an
expensive residential market and changing
government policies, it’s not surprising
to see many moving to the security of
Commercial Property. This sector of the
property market will be watched closely by
many in the coming months to see if this
trend continues.
Are OCR Cuts Enough to Help
the Market?
New Zealand’s biggest bank ANZ is
confident that the market will remain
steady after the recent record low cut to
the OCR (1.50%) but may not “shoot for the
moon” as many are hoping for.

Fiji Indians in New Zealand seek their
Pacifica Identity on Girmit Day in Auckland

Fiji Girmit Foundation New Zealand’s
youth brigade Executive team did
an exemplary event to mark 140th
anniversary of Girmit.
It was not intended as an entertainment
event, but one to empower and unite Kiwi
Fiji Indians to ensure they are recognised
as a united community and recognised as
who they really are.
As the Chief Guest Sir Anand Satyanand
mentioned in his speech, they are a seed
taken from India, that grew in Fiji and
then in New Zealand. That is a distinct
Kiwi tree, with essence of India, but they
are not Indians. That is exactly what Kiwi
Indians seek.
President Krish Naidu posed a question
that they were discriminated while in
Fiji and this has followed them to New
Zealand. He requested New Zealand
Government, its agencies and politicians
that since they are the second largest
Pacific people in New Zealand, therefore
they needed to be accorded resources that
are reserved for Pacific people.
Currently they are denied this, and he
promised that the energised youthful
team will advocate for Kiwi Fiji Indians,
and ensure they are treated as a separate
category in census.
It was 140 years ago that the first shipload
of Girmitiyas arrived in Fiji on 14 May
1879. And Fiji Girmit Foundation of New
Zealand commemorated this day with
marked differences.
The Trustees of the Foundation passed
on the baton to a youthful millennial
executive who organised this event for the
first time. And they brought in welcome
changes. There was no crying, lament or
apportioning the blame – the theme was
to celebrate the resilience, resolve, faith in
future, trust in education and vision of the
forebear Girmitiyas.

was not intended
as an entertaining
event filled with
songs and dances.
Instead, it was meant
as educational,
empowering and
enlightening - with
quiz, oratory and
historical insights.
In addition, this
programme was
used to encourage
and allow Fiji Indian
community to ascertain their rightful role
and recognition as Pacifica people, being
the second largest Pacific population in
New Zealand.
This was reflected in presidential
speech by the president, Krish Naidu,
who mentioned that Fiji Indians were
discriminated while in Fiji and this
appears to have accompanied them to
New Zealand. He said:
In New Zealand we live with an identity
crisis where we are not accepted and
recognised for belonging to the Pacific
community and entitled to resources,
opportunities, respect and recognition
available and given to people who
originate from the Pacific Island
Countries.
Certain New Zealand universities
reject Pacific quota scholarship for Fiji
Indians, because they wrongly class them
as “Indians”. The president of Girmit
Foundation called on New Zealand
government, government agencies
and other institutions to recognise
geographical, statistical, ethnicity and
historical facts about Fiji Indians, and
treat them fairly. The youthful Girmit
Foundation Executives promised to
advocate for this change.
Naidu also requested for Fiji Indians to
be reflected as a separate ethnicity in NZ
census, and requested all Fiji Indians to
stand up and unite under a Girmit banner
and to work together and build on unity.
The Chief Guest, Sir Anand Satyanand,
of Fiji Indian heritage and former NZ
Governor General outlined both sides of
his genealogy, coming from two parts of
India. He told a packed Skipton Hall that
he was moved by the respect that was
shown by the foundation in honouring
and presenting medals to over 25 elders
reaching above 80, for passing the heritage
and culture from the earlier generations
to the next one. He once again echoed
resilience and special traits our forebears
left behind which make us proud with a
rich heritage. Sir Anand posed a challenge
and question: What are we to do with our
matter with Indian heritage? It is not only
to be recorded and bottled up but shared
around for the benefit of a considerable
number.
He saluted the faith of forebears in
education and confidence in future that
has seen the descendants to shine. He
added:
I feel certain if it was possible for our
forebears to ascertain what was achieved
by subsequent generations, they would
be proud. Education and its pursuit are
of course, keynote. As Nelson Mandela
once said, education is the most powerful
weapon you can use to change the world.
The Housing and Transport Minister, Phil
Twyford also saluted all other migrants
who made Aotearoa into a beautiful
melting pot and he saluted Fiji Indians for
shining out and being exemplary citizens.
The prime event for the evening was
Girmit Legacy Awards. As resilience and
resolve of our Girmitiyas helped them
transcend adversity, what that meant is
they bequeathed the new generation a
rich and inspiring legacy. And through
that, Fiji has produced outstanding
people.
The president Krish Naidu reflected that
Fiji Indians needed to celebrate their
distinct identity and become a voice for
their people. Hence the Girmit Legacy
Awards were instituted this year to
celebrate and honour the success of the
descendants of Girmitiyas. He said it was

important that such success stories were
told, shared and celebrated. He said:
Girmit Legacy Awards are there to
recognize the achievements of the
descendants of Girmitiyas for bringing
pride, joy, sense of belonging and social
cohesion. These people have become role
models to inspire others and ensure the
hard work, spirit, values, and legacy of
Girmitiyas continue to live in action every
day through our children and youths.
This year four such awards were declared.
They were:
1) Community Wellbeing Awards –
Samajik Kushalta Ratan, awarded to
Friends of Fiji Heart Foundation.
2) Arts and Culture Awards – Girmit Kala
aur Sanskriti Ratan, awarded to Waitakere
Hindi School.
3) Sports Award – Khelkood Ratan,
awarded to Wellington A League Phoenix
Star, Roy Krishna (To be covered in detail

4) Literature Award, Sahitya Ratan,
awarded to Professor Brij Vilash Lal. (To
be covered in detail in another article)
The three awards were presented by the
Chief Guest, Sir Anand Satyanand, while
Professor Brij Lal could not be present,
and it would be presented to him in a later
event this year.

Su'a William Sio, Minister for Pacific
Peoples, presented their messages and
there were other congratulatory messages,
interspersed with cultural item and quiz.
The evening rounded off with photography
sessions where photos were taken with
the star attraction soccer star Roy Krishna
and his pageant beauty queen wife Nazia
Ali Krishna who had especially flown from
Fiji to receive the award with her husband.
And many people took out time to take
photograph with the elders who were
given medals and with the Chief Guest Sir
Anand and Lady Susan.
As usual the evening rounded off with
sharing of bilos of traditional Fijian drink,
yagona, and people had a good feed of
sumptuous meal provided. If it was a
litmus test for the millennial team of
Executives of Fiji Girmit Foundation, it
was a job well done and huge applause
from all of us.
A very memorable, and unique way
to salute the memories of those who
sacrificed for us, and Fiji Indian Diaspora
need to learn from Aucklanders to
emulate such events for their forebears in
their respective cities around where Fiji
Indian Diaspora have settled.

This World Cup will feature mostly day
games (to suit television audiences in
India). This means an uncomfortable
viewing time for Cricket followers in New
