First Impression is the Best Impression

“First Impression is the best Impression.”, quoted by Janet G. Elsea, is true in almost all

aspects; the introduction of an essay is the part that makes the first impression of your essay in

the eyes of the readers. If its special, it will encourage the readers to continue reading the essay.

The introduction is the most important part of an essay. According to an article by the University

of Maryland, “The first part is the ‘attention-grabber.’ You need to interest your reader in your

topic so that they will want to continue reading. You also want to do that in a way that is fresh

and original.” The introduction is the part of the essay that the reader reads and decides if it’s

worthy of their time. The introduction should have a hook that clings to the readers the first time

they read it. If you have an introduction not powerful enough to attract any reader, your essay

will lack quality. If the reader doesn’t find the introduction interesting, he/she wouldn’t bother

reading the rest of the essay. Therefore, the introduction is the most important part of an essay.

However, according to an article written by the University of North Carolina, “You will need to

make some sort of claim and use evidence to support it, and your ability to do this well will

separate your papers from those of students who see assignments as mere accumulations of fact

and detail.” The claim and use of evidence to support the claims are a crucial part of any essay

that makes the essay stand out from all other essays and gives the authors stand on a particular

issue or topic. Vivid explanations along with the claim and evidence will seek to leave an imprint
on the minds of the reader. Although it could be argued that the claims and the use of evidence to

support the claims are the most important part of an essay, the introduction is the hook to any

essay that will decide if the reader is willing to read the rest of the essay. It helps to get a general

idea of the essay with the author’s viewpoints at the very start. An insight into the author’s

perspective is important and that is what exactly what the introduction does. To conclude, the

introduction is arguably the most import part of an essay as it is the hook that the reader reads

and decides if he/she would want to continue reading the rest of the essay.
