OPERATIONS RESEARCH
MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
(Common to all III ME)
Time: 90mins Max. Marks: 30
Date: 20-03-2017

All questions are compulsory.

1) Patrons arrive at a reception counter at an average inter-arrival rate of 2 minutes. The

receptionist in duty takes an average of one minute per patron.
a) What is the chance that a patron will straight way meet the receptionist?
b) For what portion of time the receptionist is busy?
c) What is the average queue length?
d) What is the average number of patrons in the system?
e) What is the average time a patron spends in the system?
f) What is the average waiting time a patron?
g) Suppose management wants to keep a second receptionist when the average waiting
time of an arrival exceeds 1.5 minutes. Find what should be the average inter-arrival
time to justify a second receptionist?
2) A company has a demand of 12,000 units per year for an item and it can produce 2000
items
per month. The cost of one setup is Rs. 400/- and the holding cost per unit per month is Rs.

0.15. Find the optimum lot size and the total cost per year, assuming the cost of one unit as

Rs.4/-. Also find the maximum inventory, manufacturing time and total time.
3) Use dynamic programming to solve the fallowing problem.
Minimize z= Y12+Y22+Y32
Subjected to constraints
Y1+Y2+Y3≥ 15
and y1,y2,y3 ≥ 0 .

OBSERVATION FOR NOT ATTAINING CO AND SUGGESTION

FOR IMPROVEMENT

S.NO CO REASONS FOR NOT ATTAINING CO

Students confused in attempting the question from this unit due to similarities in
1 CO1
various LPP methods

2 CO2 Students felt difficult due to more topics covered in a single unit.

3 CO3 Students confused due to various algorithms.

4 CO4 Lack of awareness on probability concepts.

No of formulae are encountered in inventory models, hence, students unable to

5 CO5
remember those formulae.

SUGGESTIONS TO IMPROVE:

1. Focus more on difficult concepts in this unit while addressing the

lecture or by taking 1 extra class discussing these questions, Students
feel comfortable while answering.
2. Add some more basics we can easily create more flexibility for the
students to cope up with this unit comfortably.

3. More emphasis is needed to address the class with detailed
discussion over the differences will resolve this problem.
4. Practical activity is required to get more idea regarding queuing
theory and theory of games.
5. Formulate the no of formulae in a tabular form, it is easy to
remember for a student.
