MODULE I
SER- TO BE
In English we know the forms of the verb "to be" without thinking. I am. You are. We are. They are.
In Spanish, each verb changes to reflect the subject of the verb, as well as the tense (such as present,
past, or future).
Ud., él, ella (polite you, he, she) es Uds, ellos, ellas (you, them) Son
EJEMPLOS:
ESTAR – TO BE
The second “to be” verb in Spanish, estar, is used to describe location, health, or any condition that is
only temporary. In the above example, you certainly don’t expect to be sick or lost forever.

Ser is used to express the hour, day and date, place of origin, occupation, nationality ,
relationship of one person to another, possession
Ejemplos:
Soy de Colombia.
I'm from Colombia.
Soy carpintero
I'm a carpenter
Es ella puertorriqueña?
Is she Puerto Rican?
No, es guatemalteca.
No, she's Guatemalan.
Estar is used to express geographical and physical location, state or condition, many
idiomatic expressions and progressive tenses.

To express quarter hours you can use either quince or cuarto (quarter):
For times greater than a half hour you can either add the appropriate number of minutes or skip ahead to the next
hour and subtract:
Times past the half hour may also be expressed using para and/or faltar (to lack) like this:
Faltan diez para las dos. Son diez para las siete.
It's 1:50. / It's ten to 2:00. It's 6:50. / It's ten to 7:00.
To specify the period of the day you should add de la mañana (in the morning), de la tarde (in the afternoon), or de la
noche (in the evening):
Son las tres de la tarde-It's 3:00 in the afternoon. / It's 3:00 PM.
Son las nueve de la noche-It's 9:00 in the evening. / It's 9:00 PM.
Es mediodía. Es medianoche.
It's noon. It's midnight.

Adjectives are frequently descriptive. That is most often they are used to describe a noun or
distinguish the noun from a group of similar objects, for example an adjective might describe the
colour of an object.
In Spanish, most adjectives change form depending upon whether the word is masculine or feminine
and whether it is singular or plural

1.- Las formas este, esta y estos se usan para señalar algo que está cerca del hablante.

habla y del que escucha.
