I. INTRODUCTION
The mobile phone gives us the possibility of faster, more efficient and more
reliable communication between two or more people, from and to remote
places. People can communicate with each other no matter where in the world
they are because distance isn’t a problem.

Socioeconomic development depends on being communicated. Companies

need good links with their suppliers, customers, employees, in the same way,
society, in general, can not progress without the appropriate level of
communication between its members and the organizations that comprise it.

This need for constant communication has made the cell phone a "boom" that
has invaded every country that has arrived, however, every technological
advance brings advantages and disadvantages for people.

1
II. MOBILE PHONE

2.1. DEFINITION
The mobile telephone is an electronic wireless device for accessing and
using the services of Mobile telephone network.
It is called mobile phone in most Latin American countries because the
service works through a network of mobile, where each signal repeater
antenna is a mobile.

2.2. HISTORY

The first mobile phone device appeared in 1973 at Motorola's laboratories.

With a weight of almost 4Kg and 10 hours to recharge and allowed to
speak no more than 30 minutes. That was just the beginning of what was
to come, one of the most important advances in the technological world.

From the 80s to the 90s, mobile phones are reduced in size. The decade
of the nineties moved us to less heavy and more elegant mobile phones
like the Nokia 3310, also called the indestructible cell phone.

Folding mobile phone and keyboards began to become popular in the late
90s and early 2000s.

In 2007, the mobile phone arrived that will change the industry completely.
On June 29, 2007, the first iPhone was launched, the pioneer of mass
migration to smartphones.

2
With features that seemed endless and new applications developed daily,
the movile phone at the moment is undoubtedly the smartphone.

The appearance of smartphones has reached the starting point by

mimicking previous models, returning to the device of large size but
thinner.

2.3. CHARACTERISTICS

The common components found on all phones are:

 A battery, providing the power source for phone functions.
 An input mechanism to let the user interact with the phone. The most
common entry is the numeric keypad, but on smartphones there are
touch screens in place.
 A screen that repeats to the user what he / she is writing, shows text
messages, contacts and more.
 The basic services of mobile telephony that allow users to make calls
and send text messages.
 All GSM phones use a SIM card that allows you to have an account
that can be exchanged between devices. Some CDMA devices also
have a similar card called an R-UIM.
 Some GSM, WCDMA, iDEN and some satellite phones are identified
by an International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number.

3
 SOUND QUALITY
In sound quality, smart phones and feature phones vary very little. New
smartphones have appeared with some features that improve audio
quality, such as Voice over LTE and HD Voice.
Some mobile phones have small speakers. You can also use small
speakers to listen to digital music or voice audio files, or watch videos with
an audio component, without holding the phone near the ear.

 TEXT MESSAGES
The most used data application in mobile phones is the Short Text
Message Service (SMS). The first SMS message was sent from a
computer to a mobile phone in 1992 in the United Kingdom, while the first
person-to-person SMS from one phone to another was sent in Finland in
1993.

 TYPICAL SIM CARD OF A MOBILE PHONE.

Telephones with GSM functions require small microchips called
Subscriber Identity Module or SIM card, in order to operate in the network.
The SIM securely stores the subscriber's service key (IMSI) and the K,
used to identify and authenticate the user of the mobile telephone. The
SIM card allows users to change phone simply by removing the SIM card
from a mobile phone and inserting it into another mobile phone or
broadband telephone device, provided it is not prevented by a SIM lock.

4
2.4. USES

 GENERAL

Mobile phones are used for a variety of purposes, such as maintaining

contact with family members, conducting business, and in order to access
a telephone in the event of an emergency. Some people carry more than
one mobile phone for different purposes, such as for commercial and
personal use.
The mobile phone has been used in a variety of different society's
contexts. For example:

 A study conducted by Motorola found that one in ten mobile phone

users have a second phone. These phones can be used to participate
in activities such as extramarital affairs or clandestine business
dealings
 Some organizations help victims of domestic violence by providing
mobile phones for use in emergency situations.
 Mobile telephony also facilitates activism and public journalism being
explored by Reuters and Yahoo.
 Access to information in places where the fixed network or Internet are
not available, especially in less developed countries.
 through the visualization of mobile applications, advertising, social te

5
SMARTPHONES

Smartphones have a number of

distinctive characteristics. In the
developed world, smartphones
have outgrown the use of previous
mobile systems. However, in the
developing world, they represent
only 20% of mobile telephony.

 FOR CONTENT DISTRIBUTION

In 1998, one of the first examples was the sale of ringtones by Radiolinja
in Finland. Soon after, other multimedia content appeared, such as news,
video games, jokes, horoscopes, television content and advertising. Most
the initial content for mobile phones tend to be copies of legacy media,
such as advertisements or informative television highlights more
prominent.

 WHEN DRIVING A VEHICLE

The use of mobile phone while

driving, including talking on the
phone, text messages or
operating other phone functions,
is very common but controversial.
It’s widely considered dangerous
due to distraction when driving.

6
 MOBILE BANKING AND PAYMENTS

In many countries, mobile phones are used to provide mobile banking

services, which may include the ability to transfer cash payments by
secure SMS text message.
Some mobile phones can make mobile payments through direct mobile
billing programs, or through contactless payments, if the phone and sale
point support Near Field Communication (NFC). Mobile phones equipped
with NFC requires the cooperation of manufacturers, network operators
and retail merchants.

 MONITORING AND PRIVACY

Mobile phones are commonly used to collect location data. While the
phone is on, the geographical location of a mobile phone can be easily
determined (whether it is used or not).
The movements of a mobile phone user can be tracked by their service
provider and, if desired, by law enforcement and their governments. Both
the SIM card and the phone can be tracked.
Hackers are able to track the location of a phone, read messages and
record calls, just by knowing the phone number.

 ROBBERY

According to the Federal Communications Commission, one in three

robberies involve the theft of a mobile phone.
On Monday, June 10, 2013, Apple announced that it would install a
"shutdown switch" on its next iPhone operating system, due to its debut in
October 2013. On the other hand Android offers its application Find my
device to find the lost phone , block it or reset it by deleting all your
information remotely. Also, providers offer blocking by IMEI to make the
stolen phones unusable.

2.5. ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES:

 ADVANTAGES

 It helps to cut distances and to be in

contact with people from all over the
world.
 Because of its portability, we can locate
people where they are immediately.
 Its low cost. Currently, there are cell
phones that integrate video and audio
conference programs such as Skype
where calling any user in the world is
free.
 I can combine multiple applications, such
as text messages, voice messages,
access to social networks, camera, etc.
 They have spread news and relevant
facts worldwide
 When conventional media have been
silenced, social networks through cell
phones have helped to clear the truth.

 DISADVANTAGES
 It can cause self-absorption,
disconnection with reality and loneliness.
 High level of dependency
 Demotivates physical activity and
outdoor games may cause disinterest in
other forms of entertainment.
 Can disseminate obscene, harmful
material or aggressive comments to
people.
