WAE 110S Assignment on Hydrostatic & Hydrodynamics

Due: 14th May 2013

(1) Determine the resultant force due to the water acting on the 1m by 2m
rectangular area AB shown in the diagram below. [3]

(2) The arch of a bridge over a stream is in the form of a semi-circle of radius 2m.
the bridge width is 4m. Due to a flood the water level is now 1.25m above the
crest of the arch. Calculate (a) the upward force on the underside of the arch
[4]

(3) Piezometric tubes are tapped into a venturi section as shown in the figure
below. The liquid is incompressible. The upstream piezometric head is 1 m,
and the piezometric head at the throat is 0.5 m. The velocity in the throat
section is twice large as in the approach section. Find the velocity in the throat
section (Point 2).[4]

(4) Consider the following tank and a pipe arrangement. (A similar setup could be
a 200 litre drum and a hose, the drum standing at the back of a truck, and you
want to fuel up the truck's tank.) The kinetic energy losses in the pipe have
been found with 0,25 (v2) per meter length of pipe, where v is the average
velocity in the pipe. The respective pipe lengths are (d to b = 5m) and (b to c =
15m), the diameter of the pipe is D=25mm. The heights are: h1=2m, h2=3m
and h3=7m. The fluid is water with a density of (ρ water=1000kg/m 3) .
We are interested in:
(a) The discharge (volumetric flow rate through the pipe) [6]
(b) The pressure at point (b) [6]

(5) Water is pumped from a well h1 lower than the pump to a nozzle which is h2
higher than the pump and it is discharged vertically upwards up to h3. All
pipes have a diameter of D1=100mm and the nozzle diameter is D2=25mm.
The pump develops a total pressure head of h p=50m.In other words, the pump
adds hp of pressure head to the water. We ignore all losses due to turbulence,
friction in the pipe etc. (h1 = 2,5m, h2 = 17,5m,( ρwater=1000kg/m 3).
(a) Determine the velocity of the water when it leaves the nozzle. [5]
(b) Determine the height that the water will reach when above the nozzle,(h3).
[5]

(6) Water must be pumped from a well 2m deep to a tank 7m at a rate of 5 l/s.
The pipe diameter is 50 m. The pressure head loss as a result of friction is 1.5
m. The efficiency of the pump is 60%. Determine the input power to the pump.

Hints on how to handle these questions using "Bernoulli

Equation"

(1) Always make an outline sketch and indicate all heights, velocities, pressures,
forces and other useful information.

(2) Choose two boundaries for the control volume (you have two sides of an
equation) and collect all information to compute all but one parameter.
(3) Set up the Bernoulli equation in the direction of the flow. Energy added to the
control volume must be placed on the left hand side, and energy removed
from the control volume must appear on the right hand side.
(4) If there are two or more unknown parameters, one must first determine a
relation between them with the continuity equation.
(5) Solve the equation for the unknown.
