B1 Preparations for Commissioning and Operation

The following shows a listing of activities to be carried out at the burners

prior to their commissioning and operation. For assignment of components
refer to draw. no. 1612 13-0-05 resp. 1612 13-1-01 using the item num-
bers in brackets.

B 1.1 Burners
Generally, check if all burner-related components have been installed cor-
rectly and any media connections to the associated burner parts have been
fitted securely and tightly. Particular attention should be paid to the parts
mentioned below:

• Scanners of flame monitors (15, 0111) adjusted and electric cables

connected.
- Bolted connections of swivel mounts (17) tightened sufficiently.

- Hoses (8.23) for cooling air supply connected tightly.

- Ball valves (16) for sighting tube isolations opened completely.

- Ball valves (8.13) for cooling air supply opened completely.

• Ignition lances (12, 2.01) fastened sufficiently to cylinder guide blocks of

extend / retract mechanisms.
- End position limit switches (27, 2.06) at linear cylinders (14) mounted
securely.

- Electric cables of ignition devices connected.

- Hoses (8.23) for cooling air supply connected tightly.

- Ball valves (8.13) for cooling air supply opened completely.

Note: Inital commissioning of the ignitors has to be carried out acc. to the
special manufacturer’s instructions. For details refer to the DURAG

• Oil lances (7, 1.01) fastened sufficiently to cylinder guide blocks of ex-
tend / retract mechanisms.
- End position limit switches (27, 1.12) at linear cylinders (9) mounted
securely.

- Hose connections and fittings for liquid fuel and atomising medium
supply connected tightly to oil lances.

- Hoses (8.22, 8.23) for cooling air supply connected tightly.

- Ball valves (8.12, 8.13) for cooling air supply opened completely.

• Limit switches at combustion air control damper units (1.16, 1.16.1)

mounted securely.

• Instrument valves (1.21) at pressure gauges (23, 0101) opened.

• Lever mechanisms (5) for air register adjustments engaged properly.

Based on draw. no. 1612 13-1-01, the tables in the following subchapters
B 1.2 to B 1.4 each show a listing of the conditions to be prepared or to be
existent at the corresponding system-related components prior to
commissioning and operation of the firing system.

B 1.2 Combustion Air Supply

Precondition: Combustion air has to be available per burner with a max.
temperature of 300 °C, at a max. pressure of approx. 0.13 kg/cm2 (g) and
a max. quantity of 38,900 Nm³h.
For commissioning or operation all operating conditions listed below have
to be set or existent:

B 1.3 Diesel Oil Supply

Precondition: Diesel oil as fuel has to be available per burner at a max.
pressure of 5 kg/cm² (g) and a max. quantity of 3,072 kg/h.

Note: In case of any venting or draining valves they have to be closed

prior to starting preparatory activities.

Precondition: Plant air as atomising and purging medium has to be availa-

ble per burner at a min. pressure of 4 kg/cm² (g) and a max. quantity of
320 Nm3/h.
Note: In case of any venting or draining valves they have to be closed
prior to starting preparatory activities.

Precondition: Instrument air has to be available per boiler at a min. pres-

sure of 4 kg/cm² (g) and a quantity of approx. 30 Nm³/h for start-up and
approx. 4 Nm³/h for normal operation.
It is essential that the air is dry and in oil and dust-free condition.

to be set or existent:

B2 Principles of Operation

The control system is not in the scope of supply of M&S.

The operation instructions of the control system of the firing system have
therefore to be prepared by the supplier of the control system.
In the following there are only described the principles of operation.

Note: Refer also to M&S Doc. No. 1612 13-4-105 “General Description of
Burner Management System (BMS)” .

B 2.1 General
The start and stop sequences of the burner must be managed by an ac-
cording control system.

All required pressures and quantities of air and fuel, the positions of
valves or dampers as well as the flame detection of the main flame or the
ignitor operation must be monitored and controlled by the control system
in failsafe technology.

Prior to burner start, all manual valves have to be set in operation position,
the corresponding automatic equipment has to be ready for operation.

Note: Do not start a boiler with full load!

B 2.2 Furnace Purging

For furnace purging the damper has to be opened by the control system.

B 2.3 Ignitor
For main flame ignition the burner is provided with a high energy ignitor.

It is useful to proof the function of the ignitor by separate signals „start

ignitor“ and „stop ignitor“. Testing of the ignitor only should be possible if
the furnace is purged and the burner is out of operation.

B 2.4 Start Program Fuel Oil

If the signal „Start fuel oil ready“ is given, the fuel oil start program can be
started.

The fuel oil control valve, air control and burner air damper move to igni-
tion position and the ignitor starts running.

If the ignitor is in operation and all other operation conditions are fulfilled,
the fuel shut-off valves will open and the ignition safety time starts running
in the BMS.

After run down of the ignition safety time, the burner stays in operation, if
at least the flame detector sees the main flame.
The ignitor will be switched off automatically.

B 2.5 Stop Fuel Oil

Normally the oil lance should be cleaned with purging air after a burner
shut-down. Therefore, an according program sequence has to be provided
in the control system.
