Language Self-Study Reflection

This reflection is based on my personal experience with the language self-study

assignments. Overall, I had a great experience with the language self-study assignments. My

writing skills improved by reading various language tutorial chapters in the language Power

book. Also, completing practical sections and applying the concept to my own writings. It guided

me to became a better writer as a college student. What I liked about this assignment is that it is

an independent study, which I can work on it with my own time. I also liked the fact that apply

sessions in the book are designed to edit my current writing instead of using someone else’s

writing, by doing so it helped me to have a better understanding of the concept because I learned

from my mistakes.

In addition to language tutorials have benefited my writing skills, one of the tutorials that

helped me the most was the tutorial one, Parts of Speech. This tutorial mainly focuses on

identifying the content words: nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. It also explains the function

words: pronouns, articles, auxiliaries, prepositions, and conjunctions. From this tutorial I have

learned that how to identify the content words, function words, and how these words functions in

the sentences. When I completed the apply session from the book, I was able to identify the

weakness in my writing. My problem was that I used too many pronouns and as a result, I

discovered that a significant amount of repetitive words appeared in my writing. I also learned

from this tutorial is that I should utilize various words in the sentence to build stronger writing.

Even though understanding the concepts of these words are the most basic English writing skills,

it was a great experience to review what I have learned in the past. Without comprehending basic

foundation, it will be difficult to continue to learn further.

My future action plan with language power book is to continue reading the rest of the

tutorials that have not covered. I’m also going to continue to attempt tutorial and practice parts

with my writings. This book is going to help me with my future classes regardless of the subject

because writing is a crucial and essential communication skill that is required for college

students.
