The Cause of Student’s tardiness at Mahidol University International Demonstration

School

Tardy students is an issue for many of schools around the world, especially schools

that are located in urban area. The frequent of late arrivals to school is a big problem that can

affect the studies of the students. Moreover, it is considered to be against the school rules

and regulations. The number of tardies is rising and seems to be unsolvable for schools.

Mahidol University International Demonstration School is one of the schools that faces this

problem. There are many tardy students every day. To solve this problem the school create

an attendance system where tardies affect the grade of students. However, Does Mahidol

University International Demonstration School understand the student reason why they get

tardy? It is likely that most students often receive tardy because of an unexpected situation

like traffic jam or car accident.

The purpose of this research is to find out that the reasons of coming late to school are

the reason that can control or not by using a survey.This research is important as it will be a

part of finding out the solution of the problem of student getting tardy. The author uses three

academic articles from different sources to relate the results and interpretation of the survey

to other research studies.

 The question asked why MUIDS students are late for school. The choices contain two

of uncontrollable and controllable reasons each including traffic jams, unexpected accidents,

late wake-ups, physical or mental illnesses, and far distance between home and school. The

figure below illustrates that most students are late because of traffic jam and unexpected

accident which take 26 students or about 48.3 % of the chart. This is followed by late wake-

ups, physical or mental health problem and far distance between the school and home with

number of 18,8 and 5 students or a percentage of 30%, 13.3%, and 8.3% respectively. Most

of MUIDS students get tardies because of traffic congestion and accident. Even the students

are well prepared on time management, this problem can still happen.

Misjudging students when they come to school late is the thing that usually happen.

Many of the students are viewed as no responsibility when they receive tardies. However,

the truth for this issue is not what they think it is. Urban school students need to do their best

to keep their daily routine schedule at the right state or in other words, try to manage their

time but in every day.In addition ,they also might need to deal with the uncontrollable

problem too . The major reason for the tardiness is factors beyond the student’s control like

traffic problem, accident and illness (Malie,2017). Traffic is the problem that cannot control
especially in the city. Student needs to spend at least 30 - 60 minutes on the road because of

the traffic problem (Abubakar,2015). In addition, an unexpected accident also be one of the

late reasons that can occur all the time. Bad transport services and transport system is also

the main cause of lateness of the students (Dafiaghor,2015). By this factor, the attendance

system of the school will not work with this group of the students as the reason that causes

them to get tardy is the reasons that are uncontrollable.

The research report concluded that the cause of tardiness among students is not

from defective of disciplines but because uncontrollable problem which can occur in any

time. This cause the attendance system of the school to be ineffective as they solve the

problem at the wrong point so MUIDS should listen to the reason of the student first ,if it is

something that really uncontrolled, the school should give an excuse for the students.

However, if there was a repeating of late behaviour. The school should use the attendance

system with them.
