IECEP NATIONAL STUDENT SUMMIT 2018

Rules for the 2018 Robotics Competition

SUMOBOT

A robotic competition is an event where robots have to accomplish a task. Usually they have to beat other
robots in order to become the best one. The objective of SUMOBOT is the first robot to be removed from
the ring loses and the last robot remaining in the ring wins. In accordance with the game rules each team
competes on a sumo ring with a robot that they have constructed themselves. The match starts at the
judge's command and continuous until a contestant earns two points. The judge determines the winner
of the match.

SUMOBOT Specifications

1. A robot must fit within a square tube of the appropriate dimensions for the given class.
2. Weight and Size: For all participating SUMOBOTS, the maximum weight allowed is 3 kilograms
(6.6 Pounds). In addition, there are maximum size specifications:

Maximum Width: 10 inches.

Maximum Length: 10 inches.
Maximum Height: 10 inches.

All SUMOBOTS must comply with these size limitations. Please note that your SUMOBOT will be
checked for weight and size specifications as well as mobility before being admitted. SUMOBOTS that fail
to meet these specifications by the end of the Check-In period will not be allowed entry.

3. Robots must be autonomous. Any control mechanisms can be employed, as long as all
components are contained within the robot and the mechanism does not interact with an external
control system (human, machine, or otherwise).
4. The robot must have a name or number for registration purposes. Display this name or number
on your robot to allow spectators and officials to identify your robot.
SUMOBOT Restrictions

1. The robots for this competition may use any robotics platform. There are no limits on the parts
that may be used, except:
a. Robots must be purely mechanical. No use of fluids, chemicals, etc. (aside from the batteries
used to power the robot).
b. The robots must not contain parts that might be dangerous if the robot is picked up. For
example, there should be no edges that are sharp enough to cut someone from casually
picking up the robot or parts that could break or damage the sumo ring.
c. The robot must not operate in a way that will have a significant chance of damaging another
robot. Do not use parts that are intended to damage the opponent's robot
d. The robot must not interfere with the operation of the opposing robot. Jamming devices, such
as IR LEDs intended to saturate the opponents IR sensors, are not allowed. Reflective
materials to disrupt IR distance sensors or IR line tracing sensors are not allowed.

2. Any flaming devices are not allowed.

3. Contestants may use any firmware or software language for their CPU. Multiple programs on the
CPU are allowed. If, during the event, any contestant deems it necessary to change or update his
or her program(s), he or she may do so, as long as the contestant’s SUMOBOT is not currently
participating and is not currently needed on the sumo ring.

SUMOBOT Play

1. One match shall consist of 3 rounds with 2 minutes each round unless extended by the judges. A robot
earns a point if the opposing robot leaves the ring first, either on its own or being pushed out. The first
robot that earns two points, within the time limit, shall win the match.

2. Upon the judge's instructions, the two teams bow to each other in the outer ring, approach the ring,
and place their SUMOBOTS in the starting box in a parallel position (based on the initial direction of
movement). All SUMOBOTS must begin a round by moving away from the other robot; active searching is
encouraged in this way. The judge of the round will verify with the contestants that their SUMOBOTS are
positioned on the sumo ring in a way which will result in them initially traveling in opposite directions –
either clockwise or counter-clockwise as indicated by the judge. Robots must move in that direction
completely out of the box before beginning to move toward the other robot. When the judge announces
the start of the round, the teams start their robots, and after a five second pause the robots may start
moving. During these five seconds, players must clear out of the ring area.

• SUMOBOTS shall have a manually initiated five seconds delayed start. Please program your
SUMOBOT to remain stationary for 5 seconds after being activated by the press of a bumper,
switch, etc.·

• SUMOBOTS are not allowed to have random start-up directions. Please program the SUMOBOT
to begin motion by traveling out of the starting box in the direction indicated by the judge.

3. A point is earned within a match when the following happens:

a. A SUMOBOT is either pushed off or falls off the sumo ring. A SUMOBOT is not considered “out”
until it has fallen off the sumo ring and the floor below the sumo ring is supporting at least part of the
weight of the robot. Hanging over the edge does not disqualify a SUMOBOT. One point shall be awarded
to the SUMOBOT that remains on the sumo ring. If both robots fall, the last one to touch the floor earns
the point. The judge can choose to give extension rounds are given during a draw. A maximum of 2
extension rounds is allowed. Alternatively, the winner/loser of the match may be decided by judges, by
means of weight, lots or rematch.
b. One of the SUMOBOTS becomes disabled (not moving under its own power) for any reason.
The other sumo-bot will be awarded a point.

4.If the time limit is reached before one robot can earn two points, the robot with more points wins the
match. When a match is not won by either robot within the time limit, a 1-minute extended match (sudden
death) will be fought, during which the robot that receives the first point shall win the
match. If a winner has not been determined after the extended match, the judge will flip a coin to
determine the winner. The decision of the judge to resolve a draw is final and cannot be appealed.

SUMOBOT Playing Field

1. A 12foot square area will establish a spectator exclusion area. Only three persons are allowed
inside this area during a match; the judge and one robot operator for each sumo robot. Three
sides of the square will be roped off to allow spectators to view matches. The fourth side of the
area will be reserved for entry and egress by competitors and the judge. This area may vary by
venue.
2. In the center of the Spectator Exclusion Area the competition takes place in a circular ring (Sumo
Ring) 4 feet in diameter. The surface is painted black and is bordered with a white line 2 inches
wide. The ring is made of 3/4-inch plywood with two brown starting boxes are each 10 inches
square with 0.5 inch, centered 5 inches from the middle of the ring. Therefore, the starting lines
are a total of 10 inches apart from each other. During play, the Sumo ring will be raised
approximately 3 inches above the floor.

SUMOBOT Playing Team

1. Initial tournament matches will begin in groups that compete in round robin fashion. There will
be 3 rounds per match during elimination. For the finals, there are 5 rounds per match.
2. A group is composed of 3 members and a supervising coach. Only 1 member can play during the
game.

SUMOBOT Registration

1. members must submit a completed registration form. See attached registration form.
2. Registration and description of robots with picture must be completed on or before October 20,
2018.
3. During the competition, the group must register at the registration table to gather their name
badge at least 30 minutes before their scheduled competition time.

These rules are subject to change for clarification. Please check for updates.
