1.0 Introduction :

DC supply system in a power station is used either for providing a reliable source of control
power for vital control systems or as a back up power for running critical devices, lighting etc,
in case of emergency arising due to failure of AC power. Reliable functioning of DC system is
therefore of paramount importance. In case of failure of these DC power supplies, different
emergency situations can arise which need proper understanding of their consequences and
prompt action. Absence of such understanding and action may lead to extremely serious
damage to plant and equipment and safety hazards.
2.0 Scope:
This document pertains to 4 X 210 MW units of NTPC-DADRI Stage- I. The purpose of this
document is to identify all possible situations which may lead to non-availability of DC supply,
the results or consequences of such non-availability, and the measures to be taken to ensure
the safety of plant, equipment and personnel in such situations.

Case 1: Any one SG/TG 24V stream (both battery & charger units) fails.
Since bus coupler that interconnects the two 24V SG/TG DCDBs remains in OFF condition
during normal operation, failure of one stream 24V battery and charger will result in tripping of
one stream of MCBs in all SG & TG panels. Alarm annunciation for SG/TG Charger fail will
appear in LVS at CCR. The DPU status screen has to be monitored immediately to confirm that
all panels are powered up through the healthy 24V stream. Any panel that is not
communicating (shown in hashes) has to be inspected in the CER. C&I and EMD Area engineer
has to be informed immediately to take corrective action on any panel that is completely OFF
due to failure of its standby 24V stream.
 Before manually charging the dead 24V DCDB section through the bus coupler,
special care has to be taken first to ensure that no fault (eg. Earth fault) is
persisting that may lead to total failure of 24V to SG/TG systems.
- Resp.: SCE (Operation), Shift Engineer(C&I), Area Engineer EMD.

Case 2: Both SG/TG 24V streams (both battery & charger units) fail
Identification
 Check DPU Status screen. If all SG/TG DPUs are being shown in hashes (not
communicating) it indicates loss of both SG/TG 24V streams failure.
 SG & TG 24V- charger panels are to be inspected from local to confirm this indication.

1: Any one BOP 24V stream (both battery & charger unit) fails
Since bus coupler that interconnects the two 24V BOP DCDBs remains in OFF condition during
normal operation, failure of one stream 24V battery and charger will result in tripping of one

The DPU status screen has to be monitored immediately to confirm that all panels are powered

 Before manually charging the dead 24V DCDB section through the bus coupler,
special care has to be taken first to ensure that no fault (eg. Earth fault) is
persisting that may lead to total failure of 24V to BOP systems.
 Before switching ON any BOP panel that turned off, its redundant analog
output connectors have to be removed, to prevent disturbance to the process
(mA outputs get initialized to 25% or 8mA during power up). The connectors
have to be put back after normalization of panel and matching analog output
commands with actual feedback (to prevent bump in process).
 In case the CRE 41, 42, 43 or 44 are turned off, EMD engineer to be informed
before power up.

7.0 Failure of 240 V AC UPS SUPPLY:

UPS has 2 independent streams with output 240V AC voltage regulation and frequency
tracking. Each UPS has a common DC bus which receives DC power from a rectifier/charger
and common battery bank. The two rectifier/charger systems receive 415 V AC incoming
supply from unit service switchgear or station service switchgear. This DC power is converted
to give 240 V AC power output by inverter circuit of each UPS. Besides the two UPS streams,
there is a bypass emergency supply directly coming from unit emergency switchgear which will
automatically come in to service in the event of both UPS failure.
Case 1: Any one UPS stream (including battery) fails
In the event of any one stream failing, other source will continue to feed the ACDBs and “UPS
fail” alarm will come in LVS? at CCR. No system abnormality is expected. However the failed
supply has to be restored at the shortest possible time with the help of EMD/C&I.
-Resp. : SCE / HOD (EMD)/ HOD (C&I)
Case 2: Both UPS streams (including battery) fail and bypass supply in service
In the event of both streams failing, emergency bypass source will continue to feed the ACDBs
and “UPS fail” alarm will come in LVS at CCR. No system abnormality is expected. However the
failed supplies have to be restored at the shortest possible time with the help of EMD/C&I.

8.0 Failure of 220 V DC supply :

The 220 V DC supply system supplies to main plant and offsite areas including CHP. It is being
used for the following purposes.
 Control supply for breaker operation, DC drives of Turbine-generator/ boiler and other
auxiliaries for whom power supply extended with breaker.
 Protection of switchgear, generators and other critical equipments.
 DC lighting (for emergencies like grid failure).
220 V DC system comprise DCDB Sec. – A & B. Each section is fed by a charger (one charger
is supplied from unit emergency switchgear – A and the other one from Unit service
switchgear-B) and a 220 V DC battery set. In case of problem in any of the battery set
/charger, the other set can cater to 100 % load.
Non-availability of DC supply could be due to
 Fuse failure in any individual control panel.
 Fuse failure /fault in individual DC feeder at DCDB / DC fuse board.
 Battery failure leading to charger failure / vice versa.
 Fault in any one of the sections of DCDB.
 Total DC failure due to inadvertent closing of bus coupler on to a fault leading to loss of
both sections.
Case 1: Failure of one 220 V DC source
Since bus coupler that interconnects the two 220V DCDBs remains in OFF condition during
normal operation, failure of one stream 220V battery and charger will result in supply failure
from one side of the DCDB. Alarm annunciation for “220 V DC Charger fail” will appear in LVS.
EMD engineer has to be informed to take corrective action on any panel that is completely OFF
due to non-function of standby 220V stream.
Depending on the DCDB which has failed, the 220V DC supply disturbance will vary.
The following table describes the status of critical systems in the unit in the event of 220V DC
any one stream failure:

available.

Before manually charging the dead 220V DCDB section through the bus coupler,
special care has to be taken first to ensure that no fault (eg. Earth fault) is persisting
that may lead to total failure of 220V DC systems.
- Resp.: HOD (Operation)/ HOD (EMD)/ HOD (C&I)
Case 2: Both 220V DC streams (both battery & charger unit) fail

9.0 Failure of 110 V AC CONTROL SUPPLY:

110 V AC control supply is provided regulation and frequency tracking. Each UPS has a common
DC bus which receives DC power from a rectifier/charger and common battery bank. The two
rectifier/charger systems receive 415 V AC incoming supply from Unit service switchgear or Unit
emergency switchgear . This DC power is converted to give 240 V AC power output by inverter
circuit of each UPS. Besides the two UPS streams, there is a bypass emergency supply directly
coming from Unit service switchgear which will automatically come to service in the event of both
UPS failure.
