STEP #1
Look at your SENTENCES. Then, look at the FIRST LETTER of the FIRST word. Think
about what you are supposed to do with the FIRST LETTER of a SENTENCE and do
that NOW.
STEP #2
● Look and see if you have any SPECIFIC NAMES (e.g. Aslan, Lucy), SPECIFIC
PLACES (e.g. Narnia, Cair Paravel), or any SPECIFIC OBJECTS (e.g. the Stone
Table).
● Look at the examples in PARENTHESES ABOVE and then look at the FIRST LETTERS
of the examples. Then DOUBLE CHECK any SPECIFIC NAMES, SPECIFIC PLACES,
and SPECIFIC OBJECTS in your SCRIPT and make any corrections.
STEP #3
● Make sure that all of your sentences have ENDING PUNCTUATION. (e.g . ! ? )
STEP #4
● Look and make your sentences talk about SOMEONE (e.g. Aslan) or SOMETHING
(e.g.the White Witch), or SOMEPLACE (e.g. Narnia). These are the SUBJECTS of your
SENTENCES.
● Then, look and make sure your SUBJECT is DOING SOMETHING or IS SOMETHING.
What they are DOING or words like IS, ARE, WAS, and WERE are VERBS.
● What they are DOING is an ACTION VERB. Words like IS, ARE, WAS, and WERE
connect SUBJECTS to what they ARE. These are LINKING VERBS.
STEP #5
● Reread your sentences. Each SUBJECT should have a VERB. I will be looking at this
when I determine your GRADE.
● If you have MORE than TWO PAIRS of SUBJECTS AND VERBS, you have A RUN ON
SENTENCE, You are going to need to SEPARATE them so that you have NO MORE
than TWO PAIRS of S
UBJECTS and VERBS in a sentence.
Edmund slipped and fell on the banana, and Lucy battled the White Witch, and she
was really, really, really unhappy.
● PROOFREAD to see if you have any RUN ON SENTENCES. HIGHLIGHT them in any
color you choose. Please use the SAME COLOR. If you think a SENTENCE is a RUN
ON SENTENCE but are not SURE. Raise your hand and we will DISCUSS.
STEP #6
● Look at any RUN ON SENTENCES you have. IF you have NO RUN ON SENTENCES,
go on to STEP #7.
1) Look at the FIRST TWO sentences. Use a COMMA and a FANBOYS to connect them if
you do NOT have one already. (FANBOYS = FOR, AND, NOR, BUT, OR, YET, or SO)
Use a FANBOYS that makes sense. Then, put a period. Make the THIRD sentence a
SEPARATE sentence.
RUN ON:
Edmund slipped and fell on the banana, and Lucy battled the White Witch, and
she was really, really, really unhappy.
CORRECT:
Edmund slipped and fell on the banana, and Lucy battled the White Witch.
2) Look at the LAST TWO sentences.
RUN ON:
Edmund slipped and fell on the banana, and Lucy battled the White Witch, and
they were really, really, really unhappy.
CORRECT:
Lucy battled the White Witch, and she were really unhappy.
