RESUMO
ABSTRACT
The goal of this work is to show the results of a research aiming at
analyzing extension as a university social function mostly focussing the
relationship established between teaching and research. The investigation has
been carried out at the Federal University of Mato Grosso (UFMT, in Cuiabá –
MT, Brazil) involving university heads (of teaching, research and extension
units, respectively), teaching staff and representatives of the community. The
following questions have guided this work: “What is the prevailing conception
at UFMT among the interviewed sample?”; “Which consequences the
conceptions expressed by the teaching staff and heads might bring to the
university?”; and “Does the expressed understanding of extension correspond
to the community’s aims?”. The collected data have pointed out that extension
has been shown as a misunderstood function with a reduced participation.
Nevertheless, according to these data, in the heads’ and teaching staff’s opinion
the social function of the university is represented and developed by extension.
The present dissertation raises that question considering that the social function
of university should be performed by teaching and research which are socially
relevant activities.
