Semi – Detailed Lesson Plan in English


I. Objectives
At the end of the 60-minute class, 80% of the students are expected to:
1. identify the elements of the short story “The Gift of Magi” by O. Henry;
2. deduce the moral lesson presented in the story; and
3. show cooperation and teamwork through participating in a group activity.

II. Subject Matter


A. Topic: “The Gift of Magi” by O. Henry
B. Reference: Better Lesson: The Gift Of Magi
C. Materials: PowerPoint Presentation, Laptop, Projector, Speaker
D. Values Integration: Love and Sacrifice

III. Learning Activities


Daily Routine
1. Prayer

A. Activity
Before the lesson proper, the students will be given an activity entitled
“#SpreadTheLove”. The teacher will present a Christmas box of gift in front of the class
and each student has the opportunity and chance to get it through filling the blank lyrics of
the Christmas carol “Twelve Days of Christmas”. To make the game fair, the teacher will
randomly pick names in the packet to know the order of the students who will fill the blank
space. Students who will get the highest number of correct answer will receive the gift.
However, the teacher will not yet reveal what's inside the box unless they have completed
the lyrics of the songs. Christmas gift: Comb

B. Analysis
After doing the activity, the students will answer the following questions
interactively.
1. How do you find the activity?
2. What can you say about the gift your classmate received?
3. Are you still have the energy to do the activity if you already knew that it is just a comb?
4. What would you feel if you received such gift from someone you love?
5. Are you going to sacrifice something you own just to show your love to someone?

C. Abstraction
1. Presentation of the topic
The students will discuss and analyse the story “The Gift of Magi” by O.Henry
through a storyboard.
2. Comprehension Question
The students will recall the information presented through the following questions.
1. Who are the characters of the story and their roles?
2. Where and when did the story happen?
3. How much did Della save for Christmas?
4. Why did Della sell her hair?
5. Why did Jim sell the gold watch?
6. What was the wisdom on Jim’s part to sell his most valuable thing? Or did he
display a wisdom in doing so?
7. Why did Jim and Della want to present each other gifts?
8. How much attached to each other were Jim and Della in the story?
9. What is the moral lesson of the story?

D. Application
The teacher will group the class into two (2). Each group will be given a specific
task: Preparation: 15 minutes, Presentation: 5 minutes.

Group I: Sequel
Group I will create a sequel of the story. Pretend that it is 10 years down the road and Jim
and Della got a divorced. Feel free on how creative you are in presenting your group work.

Group II: Break the Plot Twist


Group II will think of another surprising plot twist of the story. Pretend that Jim and Della
are still thinking what Christmas present they should give to each other. Feel free on how creative
you are in presenting your group work.

The group will be graded according to the following criteria.

IV. Evaluation
Directions: Tell whether the statement is True or False.
1. The Gift of Magi is a well-known short story by American short story writer O.Henry.
2. It was a very cold Valentines Day as they wish to buy any present to one another.
3. Jim had a precious gold watch which was inherited from his mother.
4. Della had a beautiful long hair but she never bought hairpin for herself.
5. After paying all the bills, Della saved $1.78 to put toward Jim’s Christmas present.
V. Assignment
Read the story “Thank you, Ma’am” by Langston Hughes (Reference: A Journey Through
Anglo-American Literature Learner’s Material, pp. 219-223) and answer the comprehension questions that
follow on page 224.
