unacceptable for parties that make the subaltern classes the paradigmatic
subject of social transformation.Forthis reason, the contradictionbetween
politicaland artisticvanguards continues to be latent,even though the party
bureaucracies have tended to ignore it and leave it unresolved, reaffirm-
ing, nevertheless, the freedom of artisticexpression, while the avant-gardist
intellectuals have abstained fromdirect partisan militancy.
Althoughthis virtualpolemic was never openly manifested, it inten-
sified during the dictatorship. In secrecy, the leadership of the vanguard
parties made demands of militantdiscipline that requiredthe sacrifice of
personal emotional and intellectualconcerns for the sake of feverish activ-
ism. The existentially precarious situation of the militantswas aggravated
by living a strange duality:in a normalroutine in order to camouflage their
subversive activities, while at the same time as militants subject to the
reality of brutalrepression, fear, physical exhaustion, tension, and the ne-
glect of health. In these conditions, the frustrationof many militantswas
translated into a loss of confidence in the ability of the party leaders to
arrive at a minimalgeneral consensus that would posit an economic and
political alternativeto the dictatorship.9Faced with the considerable effec-
tiveness of the militaryrepression and the persistence throughthe years of
the politicalanimosities that had led to the crisis of 1973 (and in the 1980s
with the unravelingof the Communistbloc itself), the partydirectives to the
bases would appear to correspond to an already expired language, totally
devoid of the abilityof understandingthe real. With all of this, in the eyes
of many intellectuals, the leftist parties, in general, took on the aspect of
cold and impersonal machines, disposed to the unnecessary sacrifice of a
great number of militantsfor "reasons of state," particularlythose parties
that were preparingfor the armed struggle.
This situation explains affirmationsof the Revista group, such as
the following: "Againstthe heroic finalism of this capital M Meaning (be it
Revolution or Dictatorship),[our] practices constructed a counter-epic of
disarmament and the precariousness of signs. They broke the doctrinaire
verticality of self-enclosed meaning (ideology) through a horizontal poet-
ics of the suspensive and the discordant:all which ridiculedthe belief in a
finite realityor in an ultimatesignified, and exploded the totalismof univocal
meanings."10As opposed to the sacrifices demanded by party leaderships,
order to maintainand renew the empire of the constructed culture. For this
reason, they are also the space of the sacred and of the ritualsthat celebrate
the sacred as proofthat the gods want cultureto survive, the festivals cele-
bratingthe fruitsof labor achieved withthe exhaustion of human bodies. In
the festivals of antiquity,accumulated wealth was squandered and hierar-
chical disciplines were momentarilysuspended in orderto reaffirma feeling
of community among equals, thus instantiatinga possibility of communal
religiositythat disappears with capitalismand the secular modern state.
The postmodernist opposition between the center and the margins
has been based on arguments like these.1 It reflects not only a willto sac-
rifice on the part of a national collectivitybut also a nostalgia for a human
communityimmediatelypriorto the modernstate. Itdefines its own concep-
tion of the "good life"and the ethical and aesthetic ideal of the human being
in conflict with an apparentlyexternal and distant bureaucracythat distorts
and sacrifices actual forms of communityon the altars of an abstract and
impersonal "national"reason of state. Inorderto express this nostalgia, the
neo-avant-garde finds itself forced to adopt a poetic and visionary posture
that gives it license to escape not only history but also all the accumula-
tion of explanatory discourses of historicalteleology throughoutthe ages
of humanity. From this posture, the apocalyptical end of modernity as a
scientific-bureaucraticproject is declared. The defeat of modernity signi-
fies, in effect, the defeat of humanity.Therefore, humanitymust now seek
a new orientation guided only by desire. The bard or critic should replace
the scientist as the leader of humanity:
The time of ruins is expressed in the fragmentizationof the real, and
only the listener, the interpreter,can restore the meanings of these
fragments, of these inertand isolated elements, deciphering the ex-
treme and opposing ideas that take shelter there. In interpretation,
the fragment is saved from its definitive nullity,the idea is trapped,
and the verb is re-created. In the ruin,prehistory,catastrophe, and
the secret are enclosed. The road to knowledge, then, is to contem-
plate from the vantage point of that which is exhausted or used up
the reappearance of the signifieds that capture a time of culture.12
