Lesson Plan: Breaking the Fourth Wall

Target Age Group: 6th grade

Common Core Standard: Utah Writing 3a. Engage and orient the reader by establishing a
context and introducing a narrator and/or characters; organize an event sequence that unfolds
naturally and logically.

Objective: Students will be able to insert their own voice as the narrator to speak directly to the
audience by reading texts that break the fourth wall and mimicking the craft, at least two times,
in their own writing of a short personal narrative.

Materials: Texts that demonstrate the craft of breaking the fourth wall. Some examples include:
a. The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo
b. Another Monster at the End of This Book by Jon Stone
c. Night in the Country by Cynthia Rylant
d. The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales by Jon Scieszka

Background: This is one lesson in a personal narrative writing unit. Each student will already be
working on a short personal narrative with his or her voice as the narrator in their writing
journals.

Lesson Presentation: (15-20 minutes)

● Read portions of The Tale of Despereaux (Suggested pages: 13-14, 24-25)
● Discuss the effects of the author speaking directly to the reader. (Suggested questions:
Why would the author choose to do this? How does it make you feel as a reader? Have
you seen this in other books? How could you try this craft in your own writing?)
● Name this craft “Breaking the Fourth Wall”
● Read Another Monster at the End of This Book and have the students raise his or her hand
when the author is speaking directly to the audience
● Show an example of the craft in a piece of your own writing
● Have students pull out personal narratives they have been working on and give
spontaneous examples of how this craft could be inserted into their writing (“Writing in
the Air”1)

Activity: (20-25 minutes)

Allow students to continue working on the short personal narratives in their writing journals. Ask
them to experiment with the craft of breaking the fourth wall in at least two places during their
personal narrative.

Assessment: At the conclusion of the activity, have students answer these questions on a large
sticky note: What is your favorite part of your narrative so far? What do you like about adding
the craft “Breaking the Fourth Wall” to your narrative? What do you not like about adding the
craft “Breaking the Fourth Wall” to your narrative?
