Common Core Standard: Utah Writing 3a. Engage and orient the reader by establishing a
context and introducing a narrator and/or characters; organize an event sequence that unfolds
naturally and logically.
Objective: Students will be able to insert their own voice as the narrator to speak directly to the
audience by reading texts that break the fourth wall and mimicking the craft, at least two times,
in their own writing of a short personal narrative.
Materials: Texts that demonstrate the craft of breaking the fourth wall. Some examples include:
a. The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo
b. Another Monster at the End of This Book by Jon Stone
c. Night in the Country by Cynthia Rylant
d. The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales by Jon Scieszka
Background: This is one lesson in a personal narrative writing unit. Each student will already be
working on a short personal narrative with his or her voice as the narrator in their writing
journals.

Assessment: At the conclusion of the activity, have students answer these questions on a large
sticky note: What is your favorite part of your narrative so far? What do you like about adding
the craft “Breaking the Fourth Wall” to your narrative? What do you not like about adding the
craft “Breaking the Fourth Wall” to your narrative?
