Pagbasa ng Bonggang-Bongga

According to Butler and Fuchs, 2001, among the many interventions to address such reading problems,
peer tutoring has emerged as a practical, cost-effective intervention that has positive effects on
student reading achievement. A number of studies have shown that both cross-age and same-age
tutoring can improve achievement (Fuchs & Fuchs; Topping). That is why the SSG / Supreme Student
Government of Vigan National High School West conducted an activity the “Pagbasa ng Bonggang-
Bonga.” The activity aims to enhance and develop the reading abilities of slow or non-reader students
of the said school.

Reading is a key that unlocks the door to the other worlds of enlightenment and enjoyment. It is the
basic tool for learning in the content field (Villamin, 1984). Reading indeed is an important skill a pupil
should develop. A child who reads is a child who knows. This skill helps children in attaining other skills.
Without the ability to read, children will have hard time dealing with other things.

SSG started implementing the activity this early May. The students were identified and categorize into
slow readers and non-readers. The SSG officers together with volunteer teachers were assigned to a
certain student who is having hard time to read.

To be an effective English or Filipino Teachers and a reading Teacher as well, the teachers namely;
Maricar Lopez, Jeniffer Agcamaran, Wilmarie Teaňo, Maricar Anyog attended 3 day seminar which was
held on April 24-26, 2019 the, “Summer Reading Camp” the seminar aims to assist teachers in
conducting summer camp in their respective schools, which they shared and echoed to the SSG/
Supreme Students Government Officers and Volunteer students on May 2,2019.

April 30,2019 was the Orientation of Parents held at Vigan National High School, the parents were
informed about schedule of the activity, the reason why we are having such activity, its goal and of
course the impact of the said activity to the lives of the learners. On the same day the Grades seven to
ten, conducted the Oral reading test. Based on the oral reading consolidated report for all reading tests
being conducted, most of the grade7 failed to identify letter sounds, some of the grade 8 were not able
to read with comprehension.

The Summer Reading Camp started on May 6,2019 and lasted for 10 days. The camp were attended by
identified slow and non-reader students of VNHSW, SSG Officers, Volunteer Tutors, and Teachers.

The activity started with identifying letter sound; reading CVC patterns to those who were non-readers
and reading paragraphs with comprehension to those slow-readers. The materials were charts, flash
cards and books.

The students were able to cope up especially the slow readers; non-readers as well were able to read
simple words (CVC). In general, it benefitted the non and slow readers to be ready for the next school
year.
