Structural Design Review – 200x200x9 SHS Beam Review

INTRODUCTION

200x200x9 SHS beam was used in the structure for a span of 8525 mm. Beam was subject to a
super dead load from the stair wall which is consist of 95% glass. This calculation was done by
assuming total wall material as glass. Let’s take wall height as 3.7 m. Beam dead load will
consider in the calculation.

5mm double glazing glass mass = 25 kg/ m2

5mm double glazing glass Weight = 25 x 9.81/1000 kN/m2

= 0.245 kN/m2

UDL on the steel beam = 3.7x0.245 kN/m

= 0.9065 kN/m

~ 1 kN/m

Let’s use 1 kN/m as super dead load from glasses.

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Section Bending Utilization is 11.2% and shear utilization is 1.2%. Which means capacity of
this beam is very high comparing to the actual situation.

But when considering deflection of the beam allowable deflection is 14 mm. For above loads
this beam will deflect upto 13.3 mm. Which means deflection utilization is approximately 95%.

This wall consist 95% of glass (brittle material). Because of that excessive deflection will cause
cracking in glasses and it must be avoided from keeping the deflection on its range.

It is recommended to use the 200x200x9 beam section for the stair wall without reducing the
section.
