Expectation to the Subject

As our first semester in the law school, we still have many apprehensions whether the law

profession is for us or not. Some of us are still believing with the common stereotypes about

lawyers such as they are good liars, spoken in dollars, and always after for money of their clients.

We hope that through the help of this subject, we will be able to explore the law profession on

the lens of the lawyers themselves. This will able also us to discover our true reason and

motivation on why we are willing to have sleepless nights and read tons of cases for the next 4

years and additional 1 year preparation for the bar exam. As of now, we have a blur goal, it is

just plainly to become a lawyer. However, it is necessary that we will have a specific step-by-

step process in realizing our goal. This will lead to efficiency in investing our efforts while we

are still in law school.

We firmly believe that this subject will pave our way in achieving our dream. By saying

dream, we do not just want to constrict it in becoming a lawyer. With the help of this course,

some of us may realize that lawyering is not for us through the overview of the law profession.

Atty. Jim Lopez stated on his book entitled “How to Conquer Law School” that the most

effective way in exceling in law school is to know what lies ahead. If someone from our class

realizes that he is not for law school, then he should gladly find for a career that will make him

happy. Our group believes that at the end of this law school journey, the main important question

to answer is whether we are happy in the things that we are doing. As the millennials’ motto says

that, “You Only Live Once”. Thus, we hope that this subject will be a wake-up call for people

who are asking their selves whether the law profession will make them happy.

Moreover, for our classmates who will realize that lawyering is for them, may this subject

be a guide in becoming the best lawyer that they can be. For us, the best lawyer does not only
have the basic skills and competencies, but most importantly, he should possess integrity and

principle. These are the traits that common law schools cannot easily impart to its student.

However, we are lucky that with the guidance of the basic principle of University of San

Carlos,—Scientia, Virtus, Devotio— we will be able to always put in our mind that we are

aiming for law profession not just for ourselves, but because we want to serve the people;

especially those are less in life.
