AB Until recently, transmission network constraints have been incorporated into the
unit commitment (UC) problem (security-constrained UC [SCUC]) using the classical
direct current (DC)-based equation. This paper proposes a new formulation to model
network constraints in the UC problem by using the power transfer distribution
factor (PTDF). The classical formulation uses the binary commitment status, the
power generation, and the voltage-phase angles as decision variables. For the
proposed formulation, the nodal balance equality constraints are modeled using one
equality constraint, and the transmission network constraints have been modeled
using the PTDF and the active power generation (decision variables). The main
advantage of this formulation is the reduction of decision variables in the
operation problem in comparison with the classical DC formulation. Transmission
losses, using a piecewise linear approximation, are included in the SCUC problem as
well. Both formulations are validated and tested on the Institute of Electrical and
Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 14-bus, the IEEE 30-bus, the IEEE 57-bus, and the IEEE
118-bus. The IEEE 14-bus and IEEE 57-bus systems are used to compare the loss and
the lossless models. The results show that the PTDF-based formulation, which
requires fewer continuous variables and equality constraints than the classical DC
formulation, reduces the simulation time without sacrificing optimality. The
results also demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed formulation to address the
SCUC problem and its potential applicability to medium-scale and large-scale power
systems.

AB This paper presents a systematic framework to evaluate the performance of
conservation voltage reduction (CVR) by determining suitable substations for CVR in
operations planning. Existing CVR planning practice generally only focuses on the
energy saving aspect without taking other underlying attributes into account, i.e.,
network topology and reduced voltage effects on other substations. To secure the
desired operating reserve and avoid any adverse impacts, these attributes should be
considered for implementing CVR more effectively. This research develops a
practical decision-making framework based on the analytic hierarchy process (AHP)
to quantify several of the aforementioned attributes. Candidate substations for CVR
deployment are prioritized such that performances are compared in terms of power
transfer distribution factor (PTDF), voltage sensitivity factor (VSF), and CVR
factor. In addition, to meet a specified reserve requirement, an integer
programming approach is adopted to select potential substations for CVR
implementations. Case studies for a Korean electric power system under diverse
operating conditions are performed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed
method.

AB Transmission expansion planning (TEP) is an important and computationally
expensive decision-making process in power systems. Expression of the power flows
using power transfer distribution factors (PTDFs) could potentially reduce the size
and computational cost of the TEP. However, this formulation does not lend itself
easily for this problem as the system topology changes in the course of the
optimisation procedure. This study presents a PTDF-based TEP model devoid of
voltage angles and nodal power balances, while producing the same solution as
angle-based TEP models. The proposed model is capable of monitoring a limited
number of transmission lines that have significant impact on the system's reliable
and optimal operation. It thus considerably reduces the number of constraints and
results in a scalable optimisation problem. The proposed model is highly
advantageous especially for the TEP of large-scale power systems. The numerical
results provide an indication for the effectiveness of the proposed model.

AB Transmission network constraints become increasingly relevant in generation
scheduling models, given the ongoing integration of market zones and the deployment
of renewables in remote areas. However, a full nodal network representation in
generation models is often not possible due to computational limitations.
Therefore, reduced zonal network models are needed. A crucial step in the nodal-
zonal network reduction is the calculation of injection shift keys (ISKs).
Injection shift keys denote the nodal contribution to the zonal generation balance
and are needed to compile different nodes into one equivalent node. This paper
discusses injection shift keys in detail and proposes an improved method to
calculate them. According to the improved method, the generation and load portfolio
is split up in different categories, and injection shift keys are determined
separately for each category. A case study of the central European electricity
system indicates that the improved method is able to approximate the nodal network
without a considerable increase in computational cost. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All

AB The challenges power systems engineers are facing today require the development
of new system planning tools for analyzing generation and environmental policy
options in the transmission-constrained electricity market. The requirements of a
power-system equivalent to be used with such tools are very different from those
assumed in the traditional network reduction process. To solve this issue, a novel
structure-preserving network equivalent is proposed in this paper for modeling
large power systems in the context of analyzing policy options and emissions. In
the proposed method, a power system is first clustered into zones based on the
similarity of the power transfer distribution factors (PTDFs); network reduction is
achieved by aggregating buses (generators/loads) on a zonal basis and modeling
inter-zonal transactions (power flows) using equivalent transmission lines. The
proposed equivalent is superior to existing bus-aggregation-based equivalents in
its accuracy under both the base case and change-case operating conditions. In
addition, the method is more computationally efficient than other bus aggregation
methods proposed heretofore. This paper also examined several classic clustering
techniques and identified their performance and computational efficiencies when
applied to very large power systems. The proposed network equivalencing approach is
tested on an illustrative six-bus system as well as the 62,000-bus and 80,000-
branch Eastern Interconnection (EI).

AB Power grids vulnerability is a key issue in society. A component failure may
trigger cascades of failures across the grid and lead to a large blackout. Within
complex network analysis, structural vulnerabilities of power grids have been
studied mostly using purely topological approaches, which assumes that flow of
power is dictated by shortest paths. However, this fails to capture the real flow
characteristics of power grids. We have proposed a flow redistribution mechanism
that closely mimics the flow in power grids using the power transfer distribution
factor (PTDF). We apply the model to the European high-voltage grid to carry out a
comparative study for a number of centrality measures. 'Centrality' gives an
indication of the criticality of network components. We also show a brief
comparison of the end results with other power grid systems to generalise the
result.

AB This paper introduces a novel multi-control area framework for explicit
modeling, managing, and accounting of simultaneous bilateral transactions with
specified contract paths. Our framework provides a modular and multi-layered
electrical network representation with zooming-in and zooming-out capabilities. The
zoomed-out representation concerns interconnections and inter-area transactions,
while the zoomed-in representation concerns a single area and its internal
transactions. The framework allows explicit modeling of bilateral transactions with
contract paths through a transformation of a meshed electrical network into a
spanning tree. Loop flows are introduced to represent a deviation between the
contract paths of bilateral transactions and physical line flows. The effects of
both intra-area and inter-area bilateral transactions and loop flows can be
graphically traced in the framework. Moreover, these tracing methods allocate
bilateral transactions to line flows and loop flows, essential for accounting and
flow control. Our tracing methods differ from the distribution factor based method
because the distribution factor matrix handles nodal injections only and it cannot
account for contract paths of bilateral transactions and the resulting loop flows.
The multi-layered network transformations and tracing methods are illustrated on
the IEEE 14-bus system.

AB Pricing mechanism is a critical component in the infrastructure of electricity
market. Zonal marginal pricing (ZMP) mechanism has been implemented for its
simplicity and adaptability of managing practical electricity markets. In order to
overcome drawbacks of current ZMP mechanisms, a novel ZMP approach based on
sequential network partition and congestion contribution identification is proposed
in this paper. Network is partitioned sequentially in the presence of congestion to
eliminate intra-zonal congestions. In the approach, an optimization model is
incorporated to minimize generation procurement costs with a given number of zones.
Congestion contributions of nodes to the congested lines are identified using power
transfer distribution factors (PTDF), and ascription relations between nodes and
zones are thus decided. A numerical case based on IEEE-39 system is carried out to
demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All

AB The paper presents an evolutionary algorithm for calculating available transfer
capability (ATC). ATC is a measure of the transfer capability remaining in the
physical transmission network for further commercial activity over and above
already committed uses. In this paper, MATLAB software is used to determine the ATC
between any bus in deregulated power systems without violating system constraints
such as thermal, voltage, and stability constraints. The algorithm is applied on
IEEE 5 bus system and on IEEE 30 bus system.

TI Determination of Transient Stability Constrained Interface Real Power
Flow Limit Using Trajectory Sensitivity Approach
SO IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON POWER SYSTEMS
LA English
DT Article
DE Interface transfer limit; power transfer distribution factor (PTDF);
total transfer capability (TTC); trajectory sensitivity
ID SYSTEMS
AB Fast determination of the transient stability constrained interface power
transfer limit is a critical problem in power system real time operation.
Conventional methods normally require repeated time domain simulations to
determine this interface transfer limit; therefore, they are computationally
burdensome and time consuming. This paper presents an application of the trajectory
sensitivity method to determine the transient stability constrained interface
transfer limit. For a specified contingency, the trajectory sensitivity method is
used to determine the stability constrained maximum output of the key generators
that affect the power flow of the interface. Then using the power transfer
distribution factors (PTDFs) of those key generators on the tie-lines constituting
the interface, the maximum interface transfer increment can be determined. The
advantage of this method is that it requires much less computation compared to the
conventional methods while having the same level of accuracy.
An application of the proposed method to the WECC test system is presented in
detail. The results obtained demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the
proposed method.

TI Solving Mixed Strategy Nash-Cournot Equilibria under Generation and
Transmission Constraints in Electricity Market

DE Cournot model; Electricity market; Generation capacity; Mixed strategy;
Nash equilibrium (NE); Power transfer distribution factor (PTDF);

ID POWER-SYSTEMS; ALGORITHM; GAMES
AB Generation capacities and transmission line constraints in a competitive
electricity market make it troublesome to compute Nash Equilibrium (NE) for
analyzing participants' strategic generation quantities. The NE can cause a mixed
strategy NE rather than a pure strategy NE resulting in a more complicated
computation of NE, especially in a multiplayer game. A two-level hierarchical
optimization problem is used to model competition among multiple participants.
There are difficulties in using a mathematical programming approach to solve a
mixed strategy NE. This paper presents heuristics applied to the mathematical
programming method for dealing with the constraints on generation capacities and
transmission line flows. A new formulation based on the heuristics is provided with
a set of linear and nonlinear equations, and an algorithm is suggested for using
the heuristics and the newly-formulated equations.

AB An ability to exercise market power by suppliers may significantly reduce market
efficiency in restructured electricity markets. Many studies have been performed to
develop an effective tool to identify market power based on indices. Most often it
is rather difficult to use an index-based method for real-time analysis. This paper
provides a method to identify market power that can be used in real time. The
purpose is to analyze price-dispatch sensitivity to determine whether there is a
generator or a subset of generators that have the ability to increase its own price
profitably. Case studies performed on a modified IEEE 118-bus system are presented.

AB A simple but precise model would improve the computation efficiency for planning
a large-scale power system. Recent development of a new network reduction algorithm
yields such a model with a given grouping of buses. While the flow over the reduced
network is estimated precisely, a proper value of the flow limit still remains
unresolved. In this study, a method is proposed to group buses based on the
congestion profile in the original network and to assign the flow limits of a
reduced network. The method is tested on modified IEEE 30-bus and 118-bus systems
at various load profiles, and the simulation results are compared.

AB It is difficult to forecast renewable energy resources due to their variability.
High uncertainty of the resources increases the concern about the reliable
operation of the electric power system. Storage devices have been considered a
candidate to control variable energy resources, and most studies on storage devices
are performed in the economic dispatch. Therefore, electric power adequacy may be
an issue. In this paper, a new approach in the optimal power flow framework is
proposed for deploying storage devices, and the feasibility and economic impact
analyses are discussed.

TI PTDF-Based Automatic Restoration Path Selection

DE Power transfer distribution factor; restoration performance indices;

ID DISTRIBUTION-SYSTEMS
AB After a power system blackout, system restoration is a critical task for the
dispatchers. With the stringent requirements for faster and more efficient system
restoration, an objective transmission restoration path selection procedure,
including the option to check constraints, may be more responsive in handling
unexpected system changes and in providing directed guidance to the dispatchers to
identify the optimal transmission path and to deliver power to other power plants
or to pick up load as needed. This paper presents a power transfer distribution
factor (PTDF)-based path selection approach for large-scale power systems. Two
types of restoration performance indices are utilized considering all possible
restoration paths, which are then ranked according to their expected performance
characteristics as reflected by the restoration performance index. PTDFs and
weighting factors are used to determine the ordered list of restoration paths,
which can enable the load to be picked up by lightly loaded lines or relieve stress
on heavily loaded lines. Test results which are primarily concerned with load
restoration in the outaged system are provided based on a realistic restoration
exercise for the Western region of the Entergy transmission system.

ID ELECTRICITY MARKETS
AB The abuse of market power is a potentially serious problem for market designers.
Few indices, if any, exist to measure the potential for market power in real time.
In this regard, Murillo-Sanchez derived an expression for a dispatch-to-price
sensitivity matrix, M. The expression requires information about network topology
and parameters, as well as the rules used to operate the market. While computing
the matrix is conceptually easy for those with all the market and system
information, such as an independent system operator, the method is probably
impractical for market participants due to the inaccessibility of much of the
information. In this paper, a method for estimating the M matrix by using
publically available data are suggested, indicating that any market participant who
does the computation will know when conditions permit them to lower or raise prices
through decreased/increased bids and/or offers.

AB System planning on a large-scale electric power system is computationally
challenging. Network reduction into a small system can significantly reduce the
computational expense. The Ward equivalent technique is widely used for the
reduction; however, it may not yield the same flow pattern as the original network.
In this paper, a new methodology for network reduction is proposed and the results
are compared with those from other methodologies.
