Q1 (a) What are the TWO (2) types of gear train and describe three practical applications
of compound gear train. (5 marks)

(b) Figure Q1 shows a motor accelerating a hoist of diameter 0.9m, through two sets of
gear reducing system. Gear ratio for gear 1 and 2 is 1/3.5 while for gear 3 and 4 is 1/
4.5. Moment of inertia for the motor shaft is 5 kgm 2, middle shaft is 20 kgm2 and
hoist shaft is 100 kgm2. The rope that is encircled on the hoist must be capable to lift
up a load of 5 tones that is sliding on a 1 in 50 slope. Friction on the slope is 1000N
and the total torque at motor required to raise the load is 1500N. Use gear efficiency
of 90% for both gear set. If there is friction torque effect on the middle shaft,
T X  150 Nm and at hoist shaft is T y  800 Nm.

(i) Calculate the overall gear ratio of the system

(ii) Determine torque to overcome equivalent inertia (refer to motor side), torque
to accelerate the load and total torque to overcome friction effect.
(iii) Calculate the acceleration of the load due to the above condition.
(15 marks)
Q2 (a) List FIVE (5) disadvantages of belt drive system. (5 marks)

(b) Following are the details of a crossed belt drive. Determine the length of the belt.

Diameter of the driver : 200 mm

Diameter of the follower : 400 mm
Center distance of the drive : 2m (5 marks)

(c) A flat rubber belt is used to drive a dynamo generating 20 kW power at 2250 rpm. It
is fitted with a 200 mm diameter pulley. The design data for the belt drive system is
as below;
Allowablle stress for belt = 2.3 MPa
Density of rubber belt = 90 kg/m3
Angle of contact for dynamo pulley = 160°
Coefficient of friction between belt & pulley = 0.3
Thickness of rubber belt = 10 mm

(i) Calculate the operating tension on the tight side. (5 marks)

(ii) Calculate the operating tension on the slack side. (5 marks)
