DATED: APRIL 2016

This letter is to inform you that the City of Edina Building Inspections Department and Fire
Department requires permits to be pulled from either the Homeowner or Contractor when work
is being performed in your building or unit. Failure to comply is a violation of the Minnesota
State Building Code 1300.0140.
We require permits when you are doing construction to your unit for any type of work
like taking walls out of putting walls in; making any openings in ceilings or floors, changing
out kitchen cabinets, changing out bathrooms any} type of work in your unit with exception of
some cosmetic work like flooring, carpeting, painting and wallpapering. If you have questions
on whether something may or may not require a permit please call us at 952-826-0372.
Along with a Building permit we would need floor plans showing us where your
unit sits in conjunction with outside walls and other units around you. The City of Edina has
some plans of Condos, Apartments and downloaded here in our offices.
If any plumbing or mechanical work is being done within your unit it would need to be
done by a licensed and bonded plumber or mechanical contractor and the permits need to be
applied for prior to work. Permit fees are charged from the valuation of your project.
Electrical permits for multifamily dwellings with three or more dwelling units will be
required to have the electrical work performed and permitted by a licensed Electrical Contractor
even if you are the owner of the unit. Owners of rental properties are also required to have the
electrical work performed and permitted by a licensed electrical contractor. Minnesota Statutes
allows Homeowners who own and occupy a one-family dwelling or a dwelling unit of a two-
family dwelling to do their own electrical work with a permit, inspections are required.
Homeowners are not allowed to obtain an electrical permit and sub contract this work to someone
else. You will have to contact the Department of Labor and Industry, their website is
www.dli.state.mn.us . The electrical inspector for Edina is Doug Torvund.
After permits are pulled, our city inspectors will come out throughout your project and
check over your remodeling, making sure ail codes and safety issues are addressed. If you are
unsure as to what you need a permit for please call the City of Edina Building Department at
952-826-0372 for any questions or visit us on our website at www.edinamn.gov.
Permits are pulled, not only to protect you, but also the homeowners around you. There
are safety issues that need to be addressed when working on your project and we would like to
catch these issues before the projects begin. We want to make sure that any remodeling done in
your unit or building is done correctly and by code both by the Fire and Building Departments.
*The City of Edina's main objective on getting these permits is to keep yourself, your neighbors
and your building safe.
Thank you,

David Fisher
