A LOOK FORWARD-MY 5 YEAR PLAN

Abstract

This paper gives an outline for the professional development I plan to be involved in over

the next 5 years. This plan has been developed to set goals and expectations I have for

myself within my teaching career over the next 5 years. By creating a timeline for my

plans, I can clearly see the path I would like to take and it gives me short-term and long-

term goals to achieve. As an educator there should be constant growth and I look

forward to achieving these goals.

A LOOK FORWARD-MY 5 YEAR PLAN 4

Rationale

As a teacher who is passionate about my future, I have short-term and long-term

goals. My first goals are to take and pass the RICA along with this capstone class so that

I can apply for graduation with my Masters Degree and be recommended for my CA

Preliminary Multiple Subject Credential. I was rehired for the 2nd grade position I

interned in last year, so I would love to begin this next school year by starting the teacher

induction program to clear my credential. My school district is quite small and I’ve

already spoken with the head of the induction program and she is waiting for my final

documentation to come through.

This first year I have already been accepted into a few teacher development

programs. I will be starting the first of three years with the Arts & Creativity Initiative.

This is a program that will help me learn how to integrate the arts into my daily

curriculum. Each year the program is focused on a particular discipline area within the

arts, and I am provided with professional development, supplies, observations, and a

stipend. I have also been accepted into the Gilder Lehrman Institute, which is focused on

U.S. History. This is a particular passion of mine and I am very excited to begin

learning.

Several of the other areas that I plan on developing in professionally are my

participation in the local teacher union and school board. I would like to learn more

about how each is run and what they are doing for our students and us as educators. I

was asked this year to be the grade-level lead for next year, but I think I need more

experience within this district before taking on that role. It is important for me to do the

best I can in any role that I take on, so I don’t want to overextend myself and have my

responsibilities suffer as a result. I was the Spelling Bee coordinator last year and would

like to continue on in that capacity for now. As I complete the induction program I

would like to take on more adjunct duties. One of the biggest things I would like to do is

get my Administrative Credential. I know that I would like to be an administrator and

possibly a superintendent, however I believe that I need many more years of experience

in the classroom to administer those positions effectively. I plan to show this 5-year plan

to my current administrator and ask for her opinion on my timeline.

At the bottom of each year’s plan I have included revise/add to ePortfolio. I think

this is especially important because as I grow as an educator, the artifacts I provide to

show my competency in each of the Domains will change. This is a way for me to self-

reflect annually by critiquing my PDQP and the relevance it has for the current skills I

possess. According to Costantino & Lorenzo (2009), “The intent of this process is to

facilitate reflection and to improve teaching effectiveness” (p. 18). I also anticipate

literature reviews that are related to current issues and topics in education. I plan to seek

out as much professional development as possible so that I am continually furthering my

teaching philosophy and style, as evidenced through the growth of my students.
