1. Classroom Climate/Culture - Student Behavior

YES NO
☒ ☐Intern communicates and maintains standards for appropriate classroom behavior.
☒ ☐Intern anticipates and acts on potential classroom disruptions.
☒ ☐Intern maintains positive classroom climate.
☒ ☐Intern responds to student behaviors appropriately.
Comments:
Miss Black stated what students will be doing today during Math Factory. She maintained a positive classroom environment
while setting expectations for appropriate behaviors by providing examples for what Math Factory should look and sound
like. Miss Black provided redirection with positive comments, voice inflection, facial expressions and hand signals. She
provided consequences for inappropriate behavior choices and followed through with them as needed throughout the
lesson. Anticipating certain behaviors from specific students, she strategically placed them within close proximity of her
while on the carpet.

2. Instruction - Instructional Time

☒ ☐Intern has materials, supplies, and equipment ready at the start of the lesson or activity.
☒ ☐Intern gets class started quickly.
☒ ☐Intern uses available time for learning and keeps students on task.
Comments:
Miss Black had all materials, visuals and math group “toolkits” prepared before the lesson began. Miss Black explained to
students that the materials, shape blocks and toolkit boxes were all tools for learning and reminded them how to locate and
organize their “must do” work in individual folders within each group toolkit. The Investigation session for the whole group
activity was pulled up and previously prepared in effort to support visual learners while also providing the opportunity for
students to interact on the Smartboard throughout the lesson. The lesson began promptly after snack time as the students
began math block with calendar time.

3. Instruction - Instructional Planning and Presentation

☒ ☐Intern establishes links with prior learning and experiences.
☒ ☐Intern arranges learning activities to support standards.
☒ ☐Intern appropriately uses a variety of teaching styles.
Comments:
Miss Black arranged thel learning activities to support standards. One such activity was a Guess the Shape activity. Miss
Black asked individual students to close their eyes and then she handed them a shape. The student holding the shape had
to keep his/her eyes closed while listening to clues provided by classmates to describe the shape. Students were
encouraged to use Math Talk as they utilized appropriate math vocabulary and terms. Miss Black provided time for students
to turn and talk to recall clues that were provided to describe each shape. She connected this to the must do sheets
students did once they rotated into Math Factory.

4. Instruction - Instructional Monitoring

☒ ☐Intern circulates to check performance and monitor progress.
☒ ☐Intern varies level of questioning.
☒ ☐Intern ensures that all students have the opportunity to participate.
Comments: After the whole group lesson and activity, students followed the rotation chart displayed on the Smartboard to
rotate through Math must do and can do centers also known as Math Factory. Must do activities (worksheets) were
differentiated in each groups’ math toolkit. During small group instruction, Miss Black ensured each student had the
opportunity to participate and demonstrate his/her understanding of the concept. Miss Black varied her levels of questioning
and her lesson objectives for each group based on results from her classroom observations and students’ performance on
previously given assessments. In small groups with the square group, Miss black concentrated on providing instructional
remediation and support to these students as they completed the activity that other groups were able to complete
independently. She set the expectation that students use correct terms such as 2-D, 3-D, plane, solid, sides, corners,
vertices, edges, etc.

5. Impact on Student Learning - Facilitating Instruction

☒ ☐Intern establishes clear outcomes for learning.
☒ ☐Intern communicates learning outcomes to students.
☒ ☐Intern adjusts lesson based on student responses/ongoing assessment.
☒ ☐Intern connects learning outcomes to the NCSCOS.
Comments:
Miss Black made sure her instruction connected to priority standards as well as to grade level proficiency scales.
She was able to adjust her instruction from group to group depending on student responses and performance on
must do work. The students were asked to match and color different 2-D shapes to real world examples of 3-D
items.

6. Evaluation/Assessment - Instructional Feedback

☒ ☐Intern provides feedback on the correctness or incorrectness of in-class work to encourage student growth.
☒ ☐Intern affirms correct oral responses appropriately and moves on.
☒ ☐Intern provides sustaining feedback after an incorrect response by probing, repeating the question, giving a clue,
or allowing more time.
Comments: Miss Black consistently affirms correct oral responses and provides a great amount of praise and
encouragement to all students. She provides students with incorrect responses several opportunities to form a
correct answer by probing, repeating the question or offering clues.
