Full Marks : 50 Time : 1 hours Date : 26-05-2016

(Answer all questions from this section)

1. Two conducting spheres A and B of the same size are situated at some distance apart. Each has a charge
+q coulomb and they repel each other with a force of 10-5 N. A third conducting uncharged sphere ‘C’ of
same size is first touched with ‘A’ and then with ‘B’ and then placed exactly in between ‘A’ and ‘B’. Calculate
the resultant force on ‘C’? [3]
2. ABC is an equilateral triangle of side 10 m and D is the mid-point of BC. Charges of +100, -100 and +75
μC are placed at B, C and D respectively. Find the force on a +1 μC charge placed at A. [3]
3. Write an expression (derivation not required) for intensity of electric field in:
(a) Axial position.
(b) Broad side position of an electric dipole, in terms of its length (2a) dipole moment (p) and distance (r).
What is the ratio of these two intensities i.e. E1 : E2, for a short electric dipole? [3]
4. What will be the intensity of an electric field in which an electron experiences an electric force equal to its
weight? What in case of proton? [3]
5. Two charges of +2.4 μC and -2.4 μC are at a distance 2.5 x 10-3 m apart from each other. Determine the
magnitude of the electric field in the broad-side-on position at a distance of 0.30 m from this dipole. If the
dipole be rotated through 900, then what will be the intensity of the field? [3]
6. An electric dipole of dipole moment p is placed in a uniform electric field E with its axis inclined to the field.
Write an expression for the torque experienced by the dipole in vector form. Show diagrammatically how
the dipole should be kept in the electric field so that the torque acting on it is:
(i) maximum (ii) zero [4]
7. Derive using Gauss’ theorem, an expression for the electric field of an infinitely long line of charge having
a uniform charge density of C/m?
An infinite line charge produces a field of 9 × 104 N/C at a distance of 2 cm. Calculate the linear charge
density. [4]
8. An electric field is uniform, and in the positive x direction
for positive x, and uniform with the same magnitude but in
the negative x direction for negative x.
It is given that E = 200 ̂ N/C for x > 0 and E = –200 ̂ N/C
for x < 0. A right circular cylinder of length 20 cm and
radius 5 cm has its centre at the origin and its axis along
the x-axis so that one face is at x = +10 cm and the other
is at x = –10 cm.
(a) What is the net outward flux through each flat face?
(b) What is the flux through the side of the cylinder?
(c) What is the net outward flux through the cylinder?
(d) What is the net charge inside the cylinder? [4]
9. Prove that the potential at a point on the equatorial line of an electric dipole is zero. [2]
10. If the potential in the region of space around the point (-1 m, 2 m, 3 m) is given by V = (10x2 + 5y2 – 3z2)
volt, calculate the three components of electric field at this point. [3]
11. Three point charges 1 μC, 2 μC and -4 μC are placed at the vertices of an equilateral triangle of side 10
cm. Find the potential energy of the system. [3]
12. Derive an expression for the capacitance of a parallel plate capacitor in terms of the area of the plate and
the distance between them. Assume that there is a vaccum in between the plates with the electric field
between the plates being E = / . [3]
13. Explain why the polarization of dielectric reduces the electric field inside the dielectric. [2]

14. The area of parallel plates of an air filled capacitor is 0.20 m2 and the distance between them is 0.01 m.
The p.d. across the plates is 3000 V. When a 1 cm thick dielectric sheet is placed between the plates, the
p.d. decreases to 1000 V. Determine:
(a) Capacitance of the capacitor before placing the sheet.
(b) Charge on each plate.
(c) Dielectric constant of the material.
(d) Capacitance of the capacitor after placing the dielectric. [4]

15. Calculate the equivalent capacitance between the points A and B of the circuit given below: [2]

16. Find out in the figure given below,

(a) Equivalent capacitance between A and B.
(b) Potential difference across the 2 μF capacitor
(c) Charge on the 3 μF capacitor
