PROPOSED SURFACING CORRECTION

1.0 OBJECTIVE
This proposal is intended to address the roughness that has resulted from minor
depressions on about 10Km stretch of the Chipata to Mfuwe road. Application of
a coarse slurry seal (type 3) has, in this proposal, been recommended for this
purpose.

2.0 MATERIALS

2.1 Aggregate

Suitable crusher dust meeting the coarse grading below shall be used;

Sieve Size (mm) % Passing

9.5 100
6.7 -
4.75 70-90
2.36 45-70
1.18 28-50
0.600 19-34
0.300 15-25
0.150 7-18
0.075 5-15

Samples for testing have already been taken and the results shall be submitted
to the Resident Engineer for verification and approval. It shall be ensured that
onsite stockpiles for aggregate are well drained and that they do not become
segregated by wind or rain or contaminated with deleterious materials.

2.2 Cement

1 – 2% fresh Portland Cement by mass of the crusher dust shall be used.

2.3 Water

Only enough water to obtain the correct slurry consistency shall be added. The
recommended 160ltrs per cubic meter will be taken as a guide. The water used
shall be portable. At the request of the engineer, compatibility tests with the
emulsion shall be carried out.

2.4 Binder

Anionic Stable Mix Grade emulsion 60% (SS60) shall be used at ambient
temperatures not exceeding 50 °C. About 200 litres per cubic metre of dry
crusher dust shall be added. Correction for moisture content shall be made
whenever damp aggregate is used.

3.0 PRE-SEAL RESPONSIBILITIES

3.1 Surface Preparation

The existing surface shall be cleaned of all deleterious materials with a

mechanical broom. Where necessary the surface shall be blown with
compressed air and/or scrubbed with hard brooms.

All surface distresses needing repair prior to the application of slurry shall
be attended to as directed by Engineer.

3.2 Equipment Inspection

It shall be ensured that the mechanical broom is in good condition and

that the slurry machine is fully functional. The spreader box for the slurry
machine shall be maintained and ensured clean.

4.0 TRAFFIC ACCOMODATION

It shall be ensured that appropriate action plan is implemented to safe guard

road users and workers on site. Appropriate temporary road signs and flaggers
shall be correctly positioned on site.

5.0 SLURRY APPLICATION

Slurry shall be applied using a self-propelled slurry machine carrying all

necessary materials (crusher dust, cement, SS60 and water). The materials shall
be fed in controlled proportions(mentioned above) to mixer and discharged into
a spreader box. It shall be ensured that each application run is smooth and
uniform.

6.0 CLEANING AND OPENING TO TRAFFIC

All loose aggregate from brooming, and excess and spill emulsion shall be
removed from the travel way and disposed off to the satisfaction of the Engineer.
Construction-related signs shall be removed and traffic will be let to proceed on
the surface at least 24hours after placing the slurry.

9.0 SAFETY, WORKERS AND PROTECTIVE CLOTHING

Works shall be supervised by Site Engineer. He shall ensure that a safe environment is
maintained at all times, and that on-site safety procedures are followed.

The Site Engineer shall see to it that adequate measures are taken to warn and
protect road users and construction workers. He shall instruct the surfacing
foreman in safety measures including traffic control and use of clean standard
temporary road signs.

Good working and handling practices shall be ensured on site

All workers shall be provided with all required protective clothing such as hand
gloves, overall suits, boots, reflective jackets, etc.

Suitable hand tools and devices, free from any defect, shall be used.
