Project Requirements:
Next: DUE by January 11th on CANVAS

Select:
• You will then need to select enough of the following projects to earn 80 points. For example, you
might pick eight 10 point projects, four 15 point projects and two 10 point projects, etc. The total of
ALL the projects must total 100 points (including the 20 points for the index card).
• Due Date: February 20th. You may turn in assignments early. You May not choose a box
that has a movie about it.
• 10 Point Projects (must be NO LESS than one page, 12pt font
typed—when appropriate)
• Write an obituary for one character.
• Explain how a character in the book changed from the beginning to the end.
• If the book has a villain, why was his or her punishment justified?
• Explain why you would like to have one of the characters as a friend.
• Give a sales talk, pretending the students in the class are clerks in a bookstore, and you want
them to push the book. Write out your speech and present it to the class as if you are the
manager of the store.
• Choose a quote from a character. Write why it would or wouldn’t be a good motto by which
to live your life.
• Write a letter from one of the characters to a beloved grandparent or friend.
• Choose birthday or Christmas gifts for one of the characters involved. Tell why you chose
them.
• Add a new character and explain what you would have him or her do in the story.
• Choose a job for one of the characters in the book and write a letter of application. Include a
resume and a description of the job requirements.
• You must give up your favorite pet (whom you love very much) to one of the characters in
the book. Which character would you choose and why?
• Read the classified ads. Find something a character in your book was looking to purchase.
Cut out the ad, and write a short paragraph telling why he or she needs/wants the item.
Would the item advertised be a good buy for him or her? Why or why not?
• Where will one of the characters in your story be in 20 years? Be sure to clearly and
extensively support your answer. You probably do not want to write about a character that
dies.
• Select five fortune cookie “fortunes,” and explain their messages. Then select at least five
characters in the novel for whom you think these “fortune” messages are appropriate.
Explain your choices.

• 15 Point Projects (must be NO LESS than one and one-half to

two pages, 12pt font typed—when appropriate)
• Tell what you think happened before the story began.
• Explain how you would make your book into a movie. Who would play the main characters,
where would you film it, etc? You must explain your choices. (If your book is already a
movie, you MAY NOT complete this 15 point project)
• Write two articles for a newspaper published at the time of a major event in your book
• Write several diary entries made by one of the major characters (at least 10 entries).
• What problems did the major characters have and how did they solve them?
• If the story of your book takes place in another country, prepare a travel brochure using
pictures you have found or drawn. This project also works well for non-existent locations. Be
sure to include a list of any resources you use for this project, and DO NOT CUT AND PASTE
MATERIAL AND/OR INFORMATION FROM THE INTERNET!!!*
• Choose three conflicts that take place in the story and give the solutions. Is there one that
you wish had been handled differently?
• Pretend that you are going to join the characters in the story. What things will you need to
pack and why? Think carefully; you will be there for a week, and there is no going back home
to get something! Don’t forget to explain where you are and why you’re there.
• Imagine that you were to go through the trash of one of your characters. Explain what you
would find there and why. Base your “finds” on the story that features your characters, and
begin your explanation with a brief description of your character.
• Make a banner of cloth or paper about your book.
• Find the top 10 web sites (appropriate) a character in your book would most frequently visit.
Include 2-3 sentences for each explaining why your character likes each of the sites.
• Write a scene that could have happened in the book you read but didn’t. After you have
written the scene, explain how it would have changed the outcome of the book.

• 20 Point Projects (must be NO LESS than two pages,

12pt font typed)
• Do a collage of a major theme found in your book or one that illustrates certain parts of your
book. The collage must be no smaller than 11” x 17”, and computer generated collages are
not acceptable.
• Pretend you are a character in the book and describe the other characters in the novel from
your point of view and tell what you think of each of them. Explain why.
• Make a scrapbook of pictures of the main characters. You could cut out pictures of people
and animals that you think look like the characters and places in your book, or you could
collect magazine and newspaper articles. Include explanations for each of your choices.
• Do several pieces of art about your book (at least 5 that demonstrate significant effort).
• Create a colorful diorama of a particular scene from your book. Pay attention to the setting
and characters. Include a paragraph describing the particular scene, including a quotation
from which the project was inspired.
• Research a concept discussed in your book—a particular disease, chemical properties of a
substance, geographic location, etc. Create a handout that summarizes the information
found. Include bibliographies for all sources used. On the back, write a paragraph describing
how this topic relates to the novel, including a quotation from which the project was
inspired.
• Create a newspaper from one of the towns/cities listed in your book. Include articles and ads
that are appropriate to your story. You many choose to combine this project with some of
the other newspaper related projects (obituaries, articles, advertisements), but if you
combine projects, you must create a realistic final product that looks like a newspaper.
• If your book is based on history or historical fiction, make an ILLUSTRATED timeline showing
events of the story and draw a map showing the locations where the story took place.
• Write a one-sentence summary of each chapter and illustrate the sentence.
• Imagine that you have been given the task of conducting a tour of the town in which the
book you read is set. Make a Prezi or a PowerPoint presentation describing the homes of
your characters and the places where important events in the book took place. You may
want to use a musical background for your presentation.
• Imagine you are a travel agent, planning a tour of the part of the world or time period in
which your book takes place. Make up a booklet or a PowerPoint presentation outlining a 3
to 5 day tour of the cities and time period you will be visiting. Describe specific places and
events of interest. Include types of transportation tourists will use to get from place to place,
the types of accommodations in which they may want to stay, and places to eat, including a
description of the food choices. Include photographs, illustrations and maps.
• Plan a party for the characters in the book you read. In order to do this, complete each of
the following tasks:
• a) Design an invitation to the party that would appeal to all of the characters
• b) Imagine that you are five of the characters in the book and describe what each would wear
to the party
• c) Tell what food you would serve and why
• d) Describe the games or entertainment you will provide and why your choices are
appropriate
• e) Describe how each of the characters will act at the party
• Explain what kind of party you have chosen and why you have made this choice (birthday,
housewarming, un-birthday, anniversary, etc.)
YOU MUST SUBMIT THIS SHEET WITH YOUR PROJECT OR IT WILL NOT
BE ACCEPTED.

DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE!
