Synecdoche 1. “All hands on deck” -

2. “Boots of the ground”

Chiasmus 1. Do I love you because you’re beautiful? Or

are you beautiful because I love you?
2. One should eat to live, not live to eat.

Pathetic Fallacy 1. The sky turns black when the math teacher
arrives.
2. “I wandered lonely as a cloud that floats on
high o’er vales and hills…”

Transferred epithet 1. A scornful eye

2. A careless match

Tricolon 1. Government of the people, by the people,

for the people
2. The few, the proud, the Marines

Foreshadowing 1. Romeo said, “Life were better ended by the

hate, than death prorogued, wanting of the
love.” This is saying that Romeo would
much rather have Juliet’s love and die on
the spot, than not have her love and die
later. Foreshadowing occured because
Romeo does die with Juliet by his side and
with her love.

Dramatic Irony 1. Romeo does not know that Juliet is

awakening when he was about to drink the
poison.
2. Juliet’s parents thought that Juliet will
accept the marriage to Paris when the
audience knows that she will not.
