How will I become a proactive student and avoid mediocrity?

Ivan Lee Y9 Peace

In order for myself to become a more proactive student in class and to avoid mediocrity, I
must always be ready for class and to give in my best efforts. Being a proactive student is
important because in the future, I will be a making a transition from high school to college
and it could be very tricky if I do not improve this. There are many more factors and
characteristics that are required in order to become a more proactive student and to avoid
mediocrity.

First of all, I will have to be more engaged in class in order to become a more proactive
student. I should always feel honored and lucky to be studying in such a prestigious school
like VSA. I should be taking every class session as a learning opportunity and not to be
wasted. I should be attending class regularly, participate frequently in class, take more
notes and to always stay current with my assignments. If for some reason I missed a lesson,
I have to take my own responsibility and to ask my classmates for notes. I should also be
asking questions if I need clarification and especially when I do not understand what the
teacher is saying.

To continue on my point as to how to become a more proactive student, I must be managing

my time adequately and to always take responsibility. As Dr. Sampson always states “An
assertive person are people who make things happen rather than a passive person who
waits for things to happen.” As an IB learner, I should always be an assertive student and
assumes control and to take responsibility for my own education. I could achieve this by
improving my time-management either by noting down dates on my handbook or on my
electronic calendar. I should also be getting enough sleep as it helps to improve my ability
to focus, thus improving my grades.

Furthermore, I have to be a creative and reflective student in order to fulfill the

requirements mentioned above. Proactive students should always find ways to enhance
their education. For example, I could form a study group with my classmates so that we
could help encourage and support each other when we are having difficulties. I could also
seek tutoring or mentoring teacher so that I could talk to them about the difficulties. By
being a creative and reflective student, it helps myself to stay focused and on track.

Lastly, I should always be open minded in class. I should always stay focused and stick with
a course even when it makes me disinterested or gives me slight frustration. When the
going gets tough, I tend to not listen with my full attention and gives in my least effort. If I
wish to become a more proactive student, I must improve this and talk to the teacher and
outline steps to turn around a difficult situation, refusing to allow any difficulties to
obstruct my goals for the school year.

In conclusion, even though some of these habits may seem odd or not as useful as it seems, it
is actually vital in setting myself for success. I will have to achieve all this in order to be
successful in my life or at least in school. I have to reflect on my mistakes and come back
better than ever.
